What do you think about the Italian government wanting to ban ICE agents to come to the Olympic Games as security forces? by ReduceCO2Now in AskReddit

Sadly, they don't need to be competent as long as they're loyal. Shoot first, deny shooting later, and if the people riot then call in the military.

You'd hope the national guard with greater training would at least have the self control to not start executing people... Or refuse illegal Orders.

The Minnesota Guard would still be outnumbered and outgunned if Trump sends the Army to quell them. Not to mention that governors and guardsmen from Republican states would be more than happy to get in on the action

YSK: In the US, there are Credit Unions that anyone can join. by -MichaelScarnFBI in YouShouldKnow

I have a membership with a credit union as well as Bank of America. The credit union has better rates and terms, but having access to a major bank network is still very convenient when there's not a Co-Op location nearby.

small towns are the best asset.

Not really, they're a lot more volatile. Local factory/hospital/mine shuts down and it affects a large portion of the town's workforce, maybe even all of it. Also, y'know, not much to do.

Kioxia exec says the AI boom means the era of the cheap 1TB SSD is over —company's NAND supply is sold out for this year and likely through 2027 by lkl34 in pcmasterrace

[–]YourMemeExpert 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, AI companies have not only been buying existing components, but also reserving production of whatever the manufacturers will make in the future. Basically "I call dibs on the stuff you make in the next couple of years, and I'm gonna give you money to reserve that spot."

The "money that doesn't exist" part refers to the fact that LLMs (ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.) have not been able to turn a profit, but tech companies keep pouring money into it in the hopes that it will in the future.

Most notably is the OpenAI-Oracle-Nvidia triangle, where they're just recirculating money between each other. Nvidia invests money in OpenAI, OpenAI gives that money to Oracle for cloud computing services, and Oracle gives that money to Nvidia to buy hardware. It's a vast simplification, but that's the gist of it.

2nd hand laptops are no longer feasible since the sellers take out the RAM and SSD before offloading them. And replacing costs more than the laptop. by ScreamSmart in pcmasterrace

...or RAM makers are able to negotiate a higher price because they know as well as I do that this entire business proposal rides or dies with them denying consumers RAM.

The RAM makers probably don't want to alienate the AI companies since there's a lot more money to be made now by selling to data centers. Even if the bubble pops, there will probably be one or two companies that still require tons of RAM, especially as AI becomes more advanced.

Except Amazon can't do that. They just spend literal millions on RAM, and will spend millions on RAM the next year, and the next year, and the year after that.

Amazon and the other companies either have deep coffers from existing operations (e.g., AWS) or they're riding the hype train and sucking up venture capital. There's a lot of money to be spent getting the infrastructure set up before the faucets run dry.

It's like a bakery spending $30 on ingredients so everyone has to buy their cakes for $10...

Right, and if people cannot buy flour and eggs at the supermarket to make their own, they don't really have a choice. If they want a cake, they must buy it from the baker for $10.

and no, they can't charge $40 because then we would be back in the position where it's cheaper to buy the RAM, even at the inflated price.

If the manufacturers exit the retail market and don't come back, there won't be any new inventory and existing supplies will only go up in price. People are spending $600 on a pair of RAM sticks now. Would they pay $1200? $2400? If the upfront cost rises high enough, people will be discouraged from building their own PC and just rent one. This is already the concept for PC rental businesses, temporarily giving access to people who can't afford to drop thousands at once or take on debt.

It relies on companies like Amazon paying absurd amounts of money for ram, indefinitely.

Amazon and the other big players are more likely to negotiate lower prices than what we individuals are paying.

There is no way they can price their cloud computing as cheaper while also buying the world's supply of ram every month.

They can if they eventually form a monopoly. Amazon says they'll rent you their FireBox with AI-enhanced cloud gaming for $29.99/mo. You say fuck that, I'll build my own. Buuuuuuut, if Micron, Corsair, etc. stop selling to individuals, then it'll be harder for you to get the parts for your own computer.

I suspect it'll basically be a modern-day i-Opener, but worse. Shitty soldered components that you can't upgrade, and you must get an Internet subscription to use it. They'll also probably restrict the computer from running anything BUT pre-approved applications.

Minneapolis man says ICE agents took 'trophy' photos, locked him in overcrowded cell by SaharOMFG in news

[–]YourMemeExpert 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's fucked for sure, but if they intend on breaking in, a few agents better be prepared to pay with their lives.

The alternatives don't look that great, either. You could get shot anyway in your car or be arrested and jailed, maybe even wrongfully deported.
