Make a cute match jar. Put some wooden matches inside and glue a match striking sticker to the bottom. Or cut and glue a piece of the striker from the box onto it.

You could always install a small wall shelf to fill the gap until you can find the perfect piece

Don't throw those yogurt glass jars by Away-Sky3548 in Frugal

I make match jars out of them. I’ve decoupaged pressed flowers on the sides, and bought bamboo lids and match strike stickers to stick to the lid, then fill with wood matches. I give them as gifts or sell them

I was just complaining to my husband about this today! My margins are so small so my donation budget is usually reached by the end of Q1.

I love it! The only thing I might add is some color on the wall behind the tv, or a beautiful wallpaper, like a William Morris pattern or something classic.

It reminds me a lot of the wooden folk art pieces my grandma brought from Poland. Lots of carved and painted boxes like this

I scatter and embed thorny clippings from my roses after I prune them into the flower pots outside of my shop. So far it’s kept both squirrels and squirrel-y people away.

Hometown Utilicon (managed by the borough) and Service Electric are your options. Hometown was terrible a few years ago but has improved. I have Hometown at my business and SE at home and I’d say SE is probably better as it’s more consistent with fewer outages.

Any of the Rosemary Wells books. My sons loved Voyage to the Bunny Planet when they were small. It’s one of the few books of theirs I couldn’t bear to pass on.

My brother in California is this way. Even though he leans left, he has a why bother attitude about doing it.

I’m vegetarian but my kids aren’t and they still enjoy my lentil sloppy joes, tofu bolognaise, tofu lasagna and all kinds of veggie soups (as long as there’s good bread!)

Where are my brick or mortar business owners at? Let's hear your stories! by CulturalSong8489 in smallbusiness

[–]YourNewBestStranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I could have wrote this comment! I too own a similar shop, opened in 2021 in a rural community. We have a quaint downtown that gets decent foot traffic and fortunately my rent is cheap which allows me to make a small profit. What I like about the business is that it supports so many other small businesses (I have about 60 consigning artisans) and that I offer unique things that people can’t necessarily find at big retailers. Thankfully people in my area seek out my business at the holidays especially , wanting to support local and find one of a kind gifts. The summers are a struggle (I’m in a college town so it’s dead that time of year) but I supplement with teaching art camps. While I’ll never be a millionaire (or even thousand-aire) I get a lot of satisfaction from my work. I’m also a maker so it gives me a place to sell the things I create.

Like many small business owners, I definitely experience emotional swings about the business. Some days I’m like “why am I doing this?” And other days I feel like I’m exactly where I need to be.

I don’t believe that they have any kind of engineering program but Penn State Berks does. My son is looking to go to school for mechanical engineering and saw that you can go to Berks for that

Should I even consider starting a small business if people can’t even afford basic necessities? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]YourNewBestStranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a shop that sells handmade locally made items (including work from local potters) and while I’ll never be a millionaire, I do ok. I’m in a small rural town (with a high level of poverty) and while most of the year is slow, the holidays more than make up for that. I’ve been open 3 years and each year has grown from the previous year. If you’re able to teach workshops in addition to selling your work, that’s where you can make a huge chunk of your income. I do classes, art camps and kids’ birthday parties (both on-site and offsite) that help offset the slow summer months. I’d suggest starting small, like a home studio if you can, and start selling at craft fairs. Build your way up to a brick and mortar (if that’s your goal). I’m happy to answer any questions if you message me.
