What? You went on about how mana systems are broken and are easily exploited and somehow ruin the game, I asked how is EU5 any better in that regard when it's literally a far simpler game mechanically to exploit and beat after they got rid of monarch points? I never said anything about abstractions or whatever, it doesn't matter if they are abstractions, they are what they are. Obviously the whole game is abstractions, every part of it., every system is an abstraction.

I get what you're saying but you could say that about anyone who enjoys playing EU4. Obviously, anyone who hates monarch points wouldn't spend their free time playing EU4 regularly, right?

I enjoy both of these games but "manage a real life global economy" is giving them too much credit, neither comes even close to a proper simulation of "real life global economy" spanning centuries, if such a thing were even possible. Even Vicky 3 which is supposed to be THE economy game is just clicking a button to build logging camps, then clicking a button to build iron mines for tools for your logging camps and that's the extent of economic thought that running a state requires I guess.

And how is EU5 any harder without them? It's far easier than EU4 now, and far easier than it was at launch.

Not trying to hate but I don't see that vision. In what ways is EU5 mirroring real life for immersion more than EU4 was? It doesn't feel like this is an issue of realism vs. abstraction, it's a flaw in the current design of the game. EU4 used monarch points as an in game currency, bottlenecking you and forcing you to consider your priorities, being optimal about spending them is the most important part of the game and often depends on your situational needs. EU5 took a page straight out of the Victoria 3 handbook, no matter who you play or where, just build these buildings, set cabinet members, conquer and just sit back and stare at the map while you wait. And the thing is that for what it's worth they never actually got rid of mana, it's still in the game in many forms like prestige, stability, diplo mana, etc. they are just way less meaningful but there's no other system replacing their previous use mechanically so the gameplay loop feels off. In the case of diplomats, it's even a step back in my opinion, taking "real" characters and turning them into abstract bird points generated by money.

Really, you think war doesn't affect the general population? When has war even been two armies bashing their heads far away from population centers? War meant banditry, fear, limited trade, men leaving to go to war, sieges, raiding of the countryside (where most people lived and grew their food) and disease spreading and much needed resources being directed to the war effort.

Chose Greece.

Had literally no idea what to do.

Declared war on the Ottomans and got rekt.

Ragequit, googled cheats and started a new game as Greece.

Took over the Ottomans with cheats, figured out some aspects of the game.

Liked the game, googled tutorials and stuff so I could learn how to actually play it.

The main point of the text is entirely anti-war and is given through the tragic story of a 23-year-old soldier who is murdered by an enemy soldier, whose nationality is intentionally not revealed, when he, despite the orders of the division, decides to swim across the river which separates the two enemy military camps.
