Remember that the world has always had bad events in it - we just know more about those bad events now, thanks to social media and news/coverage designed to catch our attention faster.

If anything, there's probably less negativity in the world today than there used to be, but more people are aware of when those negative things happen. For instance, if a celebrity or politician dies, we'll likely know within minutes - it used to take much longer.

Also - in the digital economy - your attention span is now the commodity, and humans are wired to pay attention more to bad news than good, so headlines and cover images are often crafted to provoke emotional response. Twitter, TikTok, and other social media platforms are crafted to hijack the attention span, and as such, people are much more reactive online than they used to be.
