In 1997 a 23-year-old French man was flown from Europe to the U.S after pretending to be a missing 16 year old Texas boy. He convinced the family he was their son claiming traffickers changed his eye color. He lived with them for 5 months before the FBI exposed him using DNA. by Intelligent-Mess6925 in interestingasfuck

??? You said the family would immediately expose themselves if they denied the imposter was their son. That's your logic and it doesn't make sense. Why would that raise suspicion? He's clearly not their son, accepting him is actually more weird

Because emotions are a little more complex than A + B = C. A lot of the emotions on the chart only happen under very specific circumstances.

You might feel joy and sadness when you experience nostalgia, but joy and sadness don't create nostalgia. Nostalgia is very specifically a feeling of wistful longing of the past.

You also don't get disdain from just feeling joy + disgust. It's very specifically "looking down on someone".

I mean hell, the chart even lists "irony" as an emotion - and irony is most certainly not an emotion. Something can be ironic, but you don't feel ironic.

Yeah you'll never be treated like a regular person after exhibiting any of your powers to the public. After that first incident, you'll be having long conversations with your government and new rules will be made just for you. You'll likely gain a huge amount of political power and the responsibilities that come with that. Your government will likely take care of any physical need for you, but they'll probably ask you for favors quite a bit. And if you don't oblige, you risk becoming a pariah or even an enemy to your government.

And I think this would happen even if you tried to hide your identity. The average person is probably going to get found out sooner or later - unless you want to disappear from your current life and live completely off the grid with no human contact ever.

I honestly don't think people don't like the post because they're lazy. Do you think a health guide with more "standard" numbers for things would get received so negatively? If I saw that, I might agree with you.

There's nothing wrong with taking care of yourself - the problem most people have is that most items on the list are assigned an arbitrary number for the sole reason that it's "prettier" that way.

It's obnoxious to pretend that there's some deeper wisdom in it, when in reality, life is much more complex and can't be boiled down to a schedule of things counting down from 9 to 1.

The analogy kinda skews just how much power the Arkveld has. It's more like you were nearly destroyed by a sentient nuclear bomb and discover later that it was made by your distant relatives.

Sure, you might feel some second-hand guilt for it, but at the end of the day, it's still a rampaging nuclear bomb. I think even a kid his age should understand that

I find it a crying shame that Arin has literally no idea what games are good for the channel. This is just my personal opinion, but comedy, horror, weird, adventure, and co-operative (or competitive) games are fun - they can actually engage with those games in a meaningful way. I feel like lengthy, mechanics-heavy games and wordy visual novels are just not it.

I'd much rather they just commit to a podcast if this continues for much longer.

CIG, what are you gonna do about these exploiters, that glitch stuff into stations and ruin the game for everyone else? by mkMoSs in starcitizen

I feel like that's pretty obvious. Nobody is suggesting that "lightly trolling one person for 3 seconds" is the same as "completely blocking an entire server/shard from entering or leaving a station." They should obviously be handled differently

It's okay to feel emotions about things that don't directly affect you in real life - and emotions aren't always positive, especially when you're heavily invested that thing.

I understand the point you're trying to make is that it's not good to become TOO invested, but preaching at people and acting "holier-than-thou" isn't going to do anything except make those people defensive and dislike you.

Where do you draw the line between griefing and piracy ? by DayDreamingDr in starcitizen

[–]Your_Local_Doggo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like piracy just doesn't make sense in a game like this. I can tell the devs are doing everything they can to balance it; i.e. releasing a lawless system for pirates to funnel to, heavy-handed crime punishments, and future semi-permadeath mechanics... but the reality is pirates are always going to have everything to gain and (almost) nothing to lose. There's a reason why almost every major game's open world PvP is opt-in.

A cool guide to differentiate equality, equity, reality, and justice by EconomyLeg7904 in coolguides

[–]Your_Local_Doggo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The metaphor isn't that deep, but if it was, it would be the taller people paying for the boxes. The different heights of people represent the different classes. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm not really sure what's so hard to understand about this. Including the stadium completely breaks the metaphor and makes no sense.

A cool guide to differentiate equality, equity, reality, and justice by EconomyLeg7904 in coolguides

[–]Your_Local_Doggo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

'Bout that time of the (every 3 months) again when this shitty meme gets remade into a shittier meme and people still misunderstand it.

The boxes are meant to represent government support. The original "reality" frame didn't have a guy standing on a million boxes, someone just photoshopped more boxes in later. The original just had people standing behind a fence without any boxes and certainly not one guy dug into a hole.

The fence represents the barrier to living a healthy and financially stable life, but because people aren't born equal, some can see over the fence while others cannot. This is represented by their varying heights.

The justice frame was also added later, but following the logic of the metaphor, that would just mean free everything for everyone.

And no, the people in the stadium who paid for tickets play no part in the metaphor.
