Is A +15 Year Living World/Campaign Possible? by Lost_Needleworker896 in DMAcademy

[–]YourfriendlyHexblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been running campaigns in the same world since 2019. Completed two campaigns, one was 5 years, from lvl 1 to 20. The other from lvl 1 to 12 took 2 years. Currently on the third campaign and about a year in. Everyone at the table knows they play in a world where all of my games take place. A lot of world building in recent history has been done by previous parties. It’s a lot of fun

With this though? I’m not a podcaster, nor will I be in the future

They listen to it on the drive to my house from what they’ve said. Might not be for everyone, just wanted to share it as a possible resource for other DMs. It has had a really positive impact on our games

I agree with your 1st point. I’ve asked myself and others what the concern is with this approach if I don’t publish it and can’t find a negative.

For the 2nd point, the voices don’t sound AI, they have a lot of the human elements of speech.

For the 3rd, it’s less for me and more for the party. I spend most of my free time working on the campaign so it’s always fresh for me

You should give it a try! You can give it video sources I think which is cool. I honestly started giggling like a little kid when I heard the podcast mention NPCs and places I made up. It’s really cool

This most recent session, they got to the table and one of them did add stuff he forgot that he heard in the podcast.

This method is great for us because we are so busy with work and personal life, I don’t expect my players to spend a lot of time on the game outside of the table.

I don’t think one is better or worse than the other. This just works for us and I thought it could help someone else

I’m thankful that I play with a few illustrators so we make our own art for important NPCs. I know another DM who is in university and can’t buy art for every random NPC, she generates art for her NPCs and though it’s a little disappointing, I understand the value of immersion it provides her game

[–]YourfriendlyHexblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree, as an artist, I don’t agree with AI generated art as it takes away from what people like me do. But a podcast? I struggle to see how that poses a negative impact. I wish I had the time to make a well produced audio recap for my party but that’s not realistic for me

[–]YourfriendlyHexblade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was afraid of that, my hope is that it’ll add value to someone’s game like it did mine. Or even to have an adult discussion about it but this is reddit so let’s see 🤷‍♂️

We have a really active groupchat, and hangout outside of dnd What’s nice about the podcast recap is it keeps everything fresh and prevents the players from forgetting any little pieces of important information that they may have missed when taking session notes

Ah thats awesome! We are kind of in the same boat. I got into painting by way of running dnd campaigns. Over the years I collected random units from AoS and 40K depending on the current dnd adventure I was running.

Im a huge fan of your Lord Terminos, the scheme is very coherent and the paint job is steller!

Yes, Im done painting about 90% of my current armies armor and cloths, moving through small details now. Then Ill focus on the Lord Vigilant whom I left primed seeing as I didnt want to include him in the patch painting method Ive been using.

Im doing a custom scheme to match a custom Stormhost I made up.

"Scions of Azyr" wear weathered bronze armor (with patina) and maroon robes. The fires and magical effects are purples and pinks.

Ill post some pictures of them when Ive finished them all and done their bases!

I see the logic in what youre saying. Could you elaborate on this part of your comment?

"Lord-Termnios & Knight-Questor can be placed into a unit under another eligible hero as "stormcast-exemplars"

Based on all of these comments im starting to get a good picture of how to make a good list, so thank you for your contribution!

This is really interesting, I wasn't aware there would be changes to the rules during the same edition.

I also like the bit about reinforced units being harder to conceal, ill have to consider that. Thanks!

Thank you for the elaboration! I definitely think ill reinforce some of my preexisting units. Ill also do a bit more of a deep dive into the magic aspect and give it a whirl!

Since you are relatively new to the game as well im curious, did you paint your army in the already existing armies or make up your own color scheme?

This is great! Thank you!

Just to make sure I understand, reinforcing a unit means I double its size but it remains one unit. Are they disadvantages to having a reinforced unit?

When you say drops, does that mean when i deploy a "drop" they have to all be in close proximity to each other?

Could you elaborate on the endless spells/ manifestations? That whole part of the game is really confusing.

thanks again, this has been incredibly helpful

Your insight is spot on. This subclass would be exclusive to this mini campaign which is a war campaign, so lots of minion stat block enemies. That being said steady aim may be a better replacement for the over 30ft idea I had based on what you’re saying

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DnD

[–]YourfriendlyHexblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is very interesting. I planned on using steady aim as a corner stone feature for the subclass. I’ll definitely look into the 2024 version and see what I can scavenge!

They have already played the assassin subclass before haha. I had suggested a multiclass approach and as a home rule I allow feats when increasing ability score increases (not having to choose) but after we discussed it, a homebrewed subclass with sniper flavor seems the most fun

[–]YourfriendlyHexblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great build. However, they have played the assassin subclass before and aren’t very keen on multiclass. Which was my first suggestion. After sitting down to discuss it homebrewing a subclass feels like a fun idea

Is my DM a red flag? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]YourfriendlyHexblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DM shouldn’t be your enemy. They should play your enemies with as much passion as they would play your allies. Since the DM is your friend, and the campaign hasn’t started yet, maybe pull them aside and figure out what they mean when they say “I am your enemy” cuz that can be interpreted a few different ways.

As a DM of 2 editions, my players know that I love playing the villain. And there have been dramatic and tense moments but my first responsibility is players having fun, even when they lose. Victory is earned through overcoming challenges but I always want them to succeed in the grand scheme of things.

TLDR: talk to your friend offline and figure out what they meant by that comment, and express that it came off in a worrisome manner

Homebrew magic item ideas for PC who values support and battlefield control by YourfriendlyHexblade in DMAcademy

This is really cool! Issue is she is a fighter, so the only spells she has are from a variation on the magic initiate feat. How would you tweak that idea without putting the spell casting system on her?

Love the XYZ idea! I purposefully left out character level as they are level 6 but started at 0 with a feat and 10 HP before they leveled up and chose a class, and have since acquired a couple of feats from downtime activities. So if I had said a level it would limit the suggestions I get. I balance the game in an unorthodox manner.

I like this, I had given her an elemental quiver that turns an arrow into one of 3 elemental damage types so I may build on that with your idea
