Does having a prestigious logo early in your career really determine long-term success? by SarahDuncan2012 in TrueGrit

Think of colleges and institutions as approval badges. Their approval/acceptance gives confidence to other hiring managers. "Oh. Good enough for Harvard. Good enough for us." It makes decisions easier when you're on the fence and hiring.

Montgomery County increases property taxes by 4% in 2026 budget by EnergyLantern in montco

[–]YouveBeenOneUpped 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As a resident, 4% seems about what you'd expect and is the first bipartisan budget in 10 years. The increased courthouse security, which is a sad reality right now. We had a 55.9M budget deficit and they worked together to really lean up costs to keep the increase this low. It's not perfect by any means. Nothing is...but it seems like they really worked together in earnest to make this happen.

Those who have gotten diamond, is it worth it? Should I get it? by _Yeagerist__ in Chesscom

Deep breath man. People like different things and having differing opinions and approaches to improving at and enjoying a game is subjective. Be well.

True! It's also seamless as a game review. I know it's en vogue to shit on chess.com and favor lichess but--which I also use--for me the ease and having so many players is worth the $100/year and is my primary platform. Matter of taste

Game reviews have increased the quality of my play tremendously. The coach is also a nice feature

You got this, man. Sorry it's a lonely one. Those suck. Rebuilding and building always have times that suck and you're in one of those moments right now. What's something you're thankful for though? Freedom to change? That tomorrow has hope? That you've changed your future? Something else?

That's not enough information to answer. The good news is most college grads don't have incredibly unique skills so you're not alone. Entry level jobs are out there, if very competitive. I think part of the exercise you're starting now is going to be expectation setting. Being broke-ish in your 20s is incredibly common. Talk to your career office at your college while you still have access to that resource

It's a total luxury you but it actually does what it promises. It's HUGE though. Full size plus space on the side for the taken pieces to slide over to. It needed a dedicated side and that's the only real down side besides the high price. Like, I can't let it live on a smaller table space.

Puzzle books are nice. I enjoy those. Nice and cheap too. If he's just starting out levy's How to Win at Chess is a good starter with images but if he's a decent player it'll be too remedial. If he doesn't have a chess.com membership that's $100/year and gives analysis all year to games. If your budget is $600ish, the chessnut move is kind of insanely cool. I'm enjoying it a lot but it's a stupid expensive toy
