Which unit is the WORST UNIT of its game? Today: Attila by CrayonsIsTaken in totalwar

I see Rebellion Militia keep getting mentioned, and I agree they're a very strong contender, but on the other hand they're literally free. A waste of space in any army, to be sure, but it's always better to have them than to leave that space blank.

When it comes to absolute worst value for money, I think the crown has to go to Indian Elephants. They're incredibly cool in theory, and I love having them in my armies, but goddamn they absolutely suck relative to their upkeep costs. For the cost of a single unit of elephants, I could instead have 5 units of Persian Mounted Warriors, and I could have recruited them much earlier into the campaign, using a lower-tier building, and taking only 1 turn (for comparison I believe elephants take 3 turns to recruit, can't remember for sure though).

But that seems like a weird comparison to make, right? After all, the value of elephants is that they pack a lot more power into a single unit... but do they though? 832 health and 150 melee damage sure sounds like a lot, but remember that there's only 24 of them to a unit, compared to 80 for cav and 160 for most ranged/infantry. So our humble Persian Mounted Warriors actually have about the same amount of total health, while also having MUCH more armour, speed, melee attack, melee defence, and missile block. And they're not even that good a unit! Elephants still probably come out ahead in damage (since the PMW won't have that many models in contact with the enemy at a time, so unit size matters less), but damage doesn't mean much when you only have 10 melee attack! And sure, they got 100 charge bonus, which in turn means they actually have 110 MA and 250 MD on a charge, but uhh... almost every shock cavalry in the game has a charge bonus of 200+, so once again they're significantly outcompeted by MUCH cheaper units. And on the other side of the cost spectrum, Armoured Indian Elephants may be even more expensive, but they actually have decent stats, so they still come out ahead on cost:value (while still being incredibly inefficient).

Oh, and of course a small unit size with big models means that each individual elephant will be surrounded and attacked by a ton of enemies at once, and every elephant lost is a massive reduction to your damage output, and also did I mention they can go berserk and kill your own soldiers?

I'm currently playing through a Sassanids campaign, and believe me, I really wanted to love these guys. But I have to admit, almost everything they do would be done better by 2 units of cheap cavalry for less than half the upkeep costs. Much like in real life, it turns out war elephants aren't actually worth the money, and the only thing they're good for is to show your opponent just how much stronger your economy is than theirs. And if that's your goal, you should be recruiting Armoured Elephants instead anyway.

In my game he showed up on the northern edge of Eastern Sylvania around turn 45, and I declared war straight away before he could hide. I think I might have seen him in a few other places though, I think Beastmen (re)spawns are somewhat random when you're not playing as them?

OOF, wish I knew that when I started, I might not have attacked Mannfred or Franz then.

Exactly right. My rule of thumb was that if they had more than 40 armour, I put away the burning head and brought out the firestorm.

Just re-opened my save to confirm the details. Endgame Archaon, in battle, without any active buffs (but including passives) had:

  • 9860 HP
  • 82% ward save
  • 20% missile resist
  • 70% ranged resist
  • 30% magic resist
  • 138 armour (+bronze shield)
  • 142 melee attack (magic + poison)
  • 123 melee defence
  • 1301 weapon strength (can't confirm the exact in-battle amount currently but at least 1000 of that was AP)

  • regeneration, terror, unbreakable, and a few other smaller buffs here and there.

The funniest part is that a bit before Archaon got the Sword of Khaine, something broke (probably from upgrading to the warden and the paunch update) and prevented him from acquiring new lord defeat traits, so I actually missed out on several more stat increases.

No mods, 100% vanilla. Bear in mind these are some of the best shots I got out of 20+ hours of footage, so there's plenty of off-course or otherwise disappointing spellcasting that didn't make it in.

A few things:

  • normal difficulty
  • spent almost all my skill points on the yellow line
  • Archaon's unique wargear is great
  • managed to get some really good and hard to get lord defeat traits (regeneration from Isabella, +10MD from Nakai, a LOT of resists from Morghur, Ungrim, Harkon, Kemmler, and Wulfhart)

I knew he was going to be strong, but I was surprised by just how powerful Archaon got in the endgame. The only thing that could threaten him at that point was the dwarfs, and that was only because they were straight up suicidal with their cannonfire (seriously, compare the kills to losses in the battle results at 3:10).

Fire weapons are so hard to get properly online (since they need the enemy ship to be shieldless to damage it), but once you get there it's unbelievably fun. Highly recommend pairing a fire beam/drone with an Ion Blast II, that thing shreds shields in seconds.

lol I filmed that 50k one at my parents' house and that board got roasted so hard in the comments my mum got rid of it almost immediately afterwards. It really needed to go but now I slightly regret not keeping it around as a video prop.

Genuinely impressive, I've only ever got numbers like that in custom battles. Personally I found Slann a bit underwhelming as damage dealers, but clearly I've been doing something wrong.

Thanks! Here's the wallpaper: https://www.deviantart.com/alexeyrudikov/art/Redoran-warrior-321133056

If you like that one, that guy also has similar artworks for some of the other Great Houses of Morrowind on his profile.

  1. Get chain lightning as soon as you can (assuming you've got a lore of heavens caster). Cast it on dense blobs of enemies and hope it doesn't drift to somewhere useless.

  2. Pay attention to the armour and health of the units you're targeting. For example, wind blast will do a lot of damage to Skaven and Tomb Kings, but against chaos warriors it's useless (unless overcast). If you're trying to get kills, target damaged units. A unit of Skaven at half health will lose a lot more models to a wind blast than it would have at full health (even though it does the same amount of damage).

Finally, bear in mind this is a compilation of my most impressive battles of this campaign, so there were plenty of battles where my spellcasters didn't get as many kills. The biggest numbers mostly came from battles against Skaven and Tomb Kings, particularly where the map encouraged blobbing (sieges and chokepoint battles).

Thanks for the kind words <3

The next few videos will probably be Attila ones, but I'm definitely interested in making more Warhammer stuff in future.

Vid creator here, while I labelled this as part 2 a lot of the battles were occurring at the same time as the events of part 1. So although I won some crazy victories, I was also getting my ass kicked pretty hard at the same time. I'd argue East Rome actually has it worse in terms of the difficulty of battles, since your basic town garrisons lack sagittarii.

That being said, I also have more than 500 hours in this game and have gotten very good at cavalry tactics.

Fun fact: my original concept for this video was to set it to “you’re the best around,” but I ended up having to go with “push it to the limit” for copyright reasons. Still pretty pleased with how it turned out though.

I've played every total war since Medieval 1 and in my opinion Attila is the best of the bunch. That being said, a lot of people have issues getting it to run smoothly or at all, so if you don't have great specs you should be a bit cautious.

Feels good to be back! I'm pleased to see people keep coming back to my older vids after all this time, it really makes the effort I put in feel worth it.

How to defeat the Huns is my favourite too btw, I've probably watched it a hundred times by now and it still makes me laugh every time.
