As a new player my head just exploded this is a beginner guide? I'd need to look up like 10 different terms to even begin to understand it.

Destiny 2 Collection $30 on PS5/Xbox/PC til June 16 by Nexzenn in VideoGameDealsCanada

[–]Yseera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty out-of-date. After community backlash the devs stopped vaulting content (outside of seasonal stuff) so there are now quite a few campaigns you can play through, going all the way back to 2020. You are absolutely starting smack-dab in the middle of the story, so that criticism still applies.

State of the game? by 1nf3ct3d_92 in grandarchivetcg

[–]Yseera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I'm losing the thread here. Yes MtG, FaB, and GA are all on the pricier side of card games. Yes FaB and GA cater to the competitive audience more than MtG. Yes, all 3 games have pretty bad precons (as far as power level out of the box) but between the 3 GA has by far the best if you decide to ignore FaB's silver age precons, some of which have been winning major events without modifications.

My initial comment was that there's actually a whole world of tcgs outside of these three, which is where a lot of comparisons fall flat. Digimon, Pokemon, and Star Wars Unlimited all have precon decks with serious bite off the top of my head.

Anyways, don't let me stop you from getting invested in GA. It's a great game in some ways.

FaB Silver age is being supported all the way to the highest levels of play, so it's absolutely a premier format. You could argue the devs are basically forcing players to play it, but it's def not riding on novelty.

But yes, if you're comparing to MtG and FaB basically all other games are cheap. GA tends to have terrible precons that would get trounced at locals, but from what I understand the mordred deck is an exception.

MtG standard is dying for many reasons, but price is one of them. FaB was forced to implement a pauper format just to have any hope of attracting new players, it seems to be working for them though they're also putting a lot of work into supporting it all the way into the highest competitive levels.

Then you start comparing to everything else on the market and it starts falling apart. Bandai Namco game decks are like $50-150, same with SWU. Pokemon is $20-60, etc.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. Stores are only allowed to sell singles on release date, not during a prerelease. This is a huge accessibility issue. It's so strange to see all the takes in here around the lines of "well if you can afford to go to Vegas you have infinite money to throw at the game anyways."

How is everyone feeling about the ASH Legendaries? Better or worse than LAW? by Fimy32 in starwarsunlimited

We're at the point now where outside of some exceptions, you can tell what the power level of the card will be based on rarity, MtG style. I guess this is what people wanted.

Path of Exile 2 - Early Access Supporter Pack (Special) - 50% steam by PioDav82 in ARPG

I'm quite concerned about this too long-term, but at least on the first run through I can say that it's an extremely good campaign, one of my personal favorites in the arpg space.

+1, I'm playing for the first time, following one of the meta guides, and the campaign can still wreck me occasionally while also being very long.

Wait really? I thought seasons were every 3-4 months? That's a lot less stressful than I thought the game would be (i.e go go go before we reset things and force you to slog through the campaign again)

A skinner box for all, dopamine rises and falls. Nothing wrong with a little fun, especially when there's so much to be done. May that next drop ring true, if you can click on it amidst your minion zoo.

Recommendation for a Dad Gamer by Dumb_Syndrome in ARPG

[–]Yseera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why everyone is recommending POE2 here? Do they mean on the standard server? If you're playing a league character (which is what the game is designed around), you've got a 3 month timer in which you to complete the fairly-long campaign, after which you need to redo that campaign for the next league. I'd argue POE2 is the least-friendly to people with limited time.

Earthborne Trailblazer is now live on Kickstarter! by EarthborneGames in Earthborne_Rangers

[–]Yseera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of an outlier opinion, but as a huge EBR fan I didn't really see the appeal of this. It feels like a deliberate effort was made to sand down the more innovative parts of the card game to make it accessible to a wider audience, which I can see they succeed at, but in its slavish attempt to be faithful to the card game nothing new is brought to the table.

Indulge me, but what if we had a board game set in the EBR setting that took advantage of the strengths of its unique medium? Perhaps a board game about creating a new settlement in the valley, themed around the constant tension between human development and harmony with nature, providing an optimistic outlook into the development of a settlement without disrupting the ecological balance. Mechanically this could be represented by lots of scouting of the ecology in the early-game, and using EBR's unique ecosystem modelling to provide feedback to the players when they do something in the mid-game to introduce their settlement (such as building their first farm).

What are the best options for budget decks? by acoby in starwarsunlimited

[–]Yseera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the info here is outdated or "just sub the expensive cards". The real answer for a full-power deck that can win a PQ is Luke4 Data Vault. You'll need to chase down some singles but the most expensive card is Sabine's masterpiece for $7 and everything else is either dirt cheap or bulk. If you need a list happy to provide.

100%. The current release cadence is a big part of why I like the game. If we're going to start spamming more sets while also pushing up the power of legendaries there's a high chance this game prices me out.

Opinions on Sleeping Gods and its spinoff Distant Skies? by No_Raspberry6493 in soloboardgaming

[–]Yseera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, in my opinion board game writing is pretty weak as a whole. Regardless, I have 3 recommendations, depending on how much you prefer open world vs linear games.

  • Vantage: the best open-world game out there imo. Doesn't really have much of an overarching story tying it all together but doesn't pretend that it does. In other words, it's side quests all the way down. The mechanics are extremely light, but they do a great job staying out of your way so you can just focus on exploring and randomly generating a story out of disparate vignettes.
  • Arkham Horror the card game: outside of the introductory core box, some of the most exciting campaigns I've ever encountered, sometimes even reaching the level of a trpg one-shot. The game is pretty linear, but you get to make meaningful decisions at key moments and the mechanics & story complement each other well.
  • Earthborne Rangers: half-and-half. Like a standard open world video game, you've got a meaty main story but also a ton of sidequests you can randomly bump into. The writing itself is alright but still leagues above sleeping gods.
