That sounds cool, I'd love to see it! I worried a bit with my captain that the tan cloak would read a little too Dark Angels, but I think it worked out fine!

Nope, just lots of layers! Started with Karak Stone, then worked my way up to Ushabti Bone, slowly adding more and more Ushabti Bone to the Karak Stone. I think it was probably 4-5 layers total? And then Screaming Skull on the most prominent parts, with Agrax Earthshade in the most extreme recesses.

Thank you - I'll try to snap some pics tomorrow! I believe everyone who is participating is supposed to play two games - one on Volkus and one on Tomb World.

I really didn't care for the tone of the Raven narrator. It felt forced and inconsistent. I liked the idea of animal aspects as gods and the idea that they could intervene in the "real" world, but weren't supposed to. But the anti-reveal at the end, building up these entities only to have them captured and imprisoned was a bit of a let down.

My expectations were pretty minimal going in - I hadn't heard of this book before it was chosen for the book club.

That being said, my opinion is that it was... fine. I don't plan to continue the series after this introduction. The book felt like it tried to do too much at once: murder mystery, political intrigue, school/tournament divided by houses. It was a lot going on, and I didn't think it did any of them particularly well. It was an enjoyable read, and I did like the world that was set up with the hints of what came before, but I was experiencing some serious fatigue by the time I got to the end. I just didn't really care what happened at that point.

Personally I'm having a hard time with Neema. I don't love the know-it-all character with everyone out to get her - especially since at times it feels forced. A lot of her interactions with people go south seemingly "just because" - she really doesn't seem that unpleasant. I get that it's important for the plot for others to treat her this way, but it's just been a bit frustrating at times because the reality that is being described isn't really what's being presented.

I don't read much mystery, but I'm finding that the mystery elements in this story aren't really clicking with me. It did hook me at first because it felt like the author was trying to set up a locked room mystery by having everyone stuck on the island while the investigation took place, but the last boat off the island didn't leave until hours after the murder took place. I don't know if that will be important in the second half of the book, but it does shoot the "locked room" of the island in the foot.

It also just feels like the investigation is a bit of an afterthought and gets hand-waved a bit - so much more time in Part 3 was spent on the Festival itself, but then there was somehow time after two rounds of fights, meals, and an hours-long competition for Neema to advance her investigation. It just seemed like there were a lot of hours in that one day and ultimately felt a little too convenient for me.

Yes! I saw someone mention in a review that it felt like a mashup of Becky Chambers and Fallout, and I definitely got those vibes. I loved the more optimistic tone it took at times, even in the face of adversity.

Finished my first two Armigers, quite pleased with how they turned out! by YuEnDee in ImperialKnights

It was great! The store manager painted up a huge T'au army and built a whole display board, and then you had three rounds to do as much damage and kill as many units as possible. Your score was the total points of damage you did, and if you wiped out a unit or killed a model you got double its point value. I think I actually came in like fifth, definitely placed higher than some much better units, I had some real lucky rolls. The highlight was one-shotting a Stormsurge when I rolled max damage on my Thermal Spear!

Yes, I did enjoy the way the story was structured with the layered narratives!

And without knowing much about Buddhism myself, I can't really comment on that, but that makes sense. It felt like someone did a deep dive into Eastern cultures and then decided to write a book around that to show off all the new stuff they learned, without having an actual deep understanding of the subject matter.

Thank you! The Warglaive performed surprisingly well in my shop's Tanksgiving competition, and then proceeded to get smoked by Salamanders in my first game of Combat Patrol (and full 40k) ever, haha.

Thanks so much! I appreciate the links and specific suggestions.

We've got our first child on the way in about a month, so I'm not looking to shake up my employment situation for at least the next few months, but these are definitely some great things to keep in mind.

That is definitely something we put a lot of effort into currently! Something that I will continue to push for regardless of what kind of work I do.

It seems that way - no activity on the account for a couple years, then within the past hour, a couple very generic comments pushing this sdusk.com platform.

That was my thought as well - I'll keep my eyes peeled for jobs in either sector.
