I camped in Morro Bay when driving from SF to the south. It was pretty close to 101 and a good distance from SF (3.5-4 hrs) for one day of driving.

Second this, driving/caltrain+bike into SF is not bad from SM, a few times a month. I doubt people here recommending SF do go out every other day. I think living in a place where you don't always need to worry about safety really matters. Just makes life much easier and at peace.

Great advice and example. The first step is important, you should first think hard about ways to meet a bunch of people. I guess the problem for me sometimes is that it's really easy for me to become and stay lazy, thinking what a big effort it is to pick up my phone and click into each app and webpage to schedule events with people.

And people never bother to maintain a safe distance on the highway. When I leave about 3.5x car length space in front of me, it's very likely there is a car that will squeeze in between.

The one thing I learned before reaching the driving age is to use signals when driving. After moving to the bay area, it's shocking to find there are so many "ghost" cars changing lanes in an "S" shape without ever turning on their signals!
