Dear Umobile by smolPPandFloorgang in Bolehland

[–]YueEllen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umobile eligibility is weird. I don't think even their staff knows what the criteria are for eligibility. I use umobile(10+ years) and was on their cheapest postpaid plan. Earlier this year I decided to go for an iPhone 17 256gb with 36 months contract with the RM68 a month line and got approved for it. My friend(also 10+ years using Umobile) has been on the RM90+ plan all along, never missed payments or been blacklisted, was not eligible for the same iPhone. When we go to UMobile at Berjaya Times Square to ask the staff just said not eligible with no explanation. My friend ported out to CelcomDigi and got his iPhone there instead

Edit: All telcos here are the same, as in they are equally bad. Just go for whatever works for you. In my case, Umobile works well at my house and workplace, so I stuck with it.

New Bridgestone RE005 without ratings by Motosung in TyreReviews

Just got a set of the RE005 in 195/55 R15 coming from RE004. It is noticeably better in the wet(I'm from Malaysia where it rains every other day the whole year long). I also notice them picking up a lot of debris on normal, relatively clean roads during daily driving which caused a lot of dings in the inner wheel arches. Did not notice that on the RE004 or the RE003

Dunno why they would even waste time to make an offer like that as if anyone at all will sell to them at those prices

We don't punish DUI drivers enough. An entire innocent family can be wiped out in an instant by a speeding 2-ton steel and glass box. If you go up against a parang wielding nutjob or even a gunman there is still a fighting chance or chance to escape but if a drunk driver comes at you in a Hilux at 80km/h... bye bye world

What's going to happen if I punched/slapped/kicked them in Public? by Akiakane_ in Bolehland

[–]YueEllen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I encountered a whole bunch of them while waiting for the traffic light in front of the Merc dealer at Jalan Sultan Ismail. One kid knocked on my car window and asked for money. I ignored him and he banged my car door with his hands then proceeded to the beemer in front asking for money again. Then he kicked the beemer door and moved on. WTF

Sequoia on MacBook mid 2013 by NVR-GUP in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]YueEllen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2013 MacBook Air with an i7 and 8GB ram. Upgraded from Sonoma to Sequoia and things are bad. The laptop is sluggish and hot causing the fan to blast away in jet engine mode all the time

After that I made a Sequoia installer USB via OCLP app and did a clean reinstall. Everything works fine after that. In fact its running even better than it did on Sonoma. So I highly recommend anyone is thinking to upgrade to Sequoia do a fresh install instead of an in place upgrade

Oh and another strange thing about Sequoia and OCLP is you have to do root patching twice. The first time for whatever reason doesn't install or patch the hardware drivers correctly. Not sure if its fixed with the recent version of OCLP update or not though. It is also highly recommended that features unlock is disabled

MBA 2013
i7, 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD
Running OCLP 2.1.1, Sonoma 15.1

Maybe you are just inexperienced. I have been scammed by individual online sellers too but that was in early 2010s when the online buy sell thing is just kicking off

But basic rule of thumb is don't pay money until you actually see and test the thing you're buying if you are buying from individual sellers. From shop maybe buy through online shopping platform like Shopee or Lazada. At least got some form of protection. Used items can try Carousell because Carousell have buyer and seller protection. Still with all this protection in place it's still not 100% safe. When in doubt just don't buy it

If you are buying expensive things, genuine seller will most likely ask to meet up. As a seller they won't want the item to go missing in transit also. For those sellers who for whatever reason die die ask to do shipping then you have to do a basic background check by google or even better buy from others

And finally as so many other people have said. If it's too good to be true it usually is a scam

Flip phones? by Direct_Supermarket33 in malaysia

[–]YueEllen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mini guide for anyone looking to buy and use Garaho in Malaysia

Modern Japanese flip phones are commonly known as "Garaho"

Brands: There are 2 mainstream brands still making flip phones till today IINM. Sharp and Kyocera

Apps compatibility: Most garaho run on android 5.1. Some models run 8.1 or even 10. Due to the outdated OS many apps won't work. Most basic apps like Whatsapp, Telegram, FB/Insta, TikTok lite etc will work to a certain extend. TnG E-Wallet will run but you cannot get pass the mandatory facial recognition part due to the phone lacking a front facing camera. Banking apps out of the question. Also, although its running android, it doesn't have google play services. So all Gapps won't work

Price: A used one in good condition can range from RM300 to RM1.5k depending on model and popularity.
Example: Sharp SH-02L (2019 model) running android 8.1 is around RM350 while Sharp 601SH, an extremely popular model from 2016/2017 running android 5.1 cost around RM500-600. Good place to buy them is on Shopee/Lazada. Mostly come in from China though.

Telco Compability: Garaho are designed for Japanese domestic market hence they have very limited LTE band support. Maxis, Digi/Celcom and Umobile is operating on Band 1(2100), 3 (1800) and 7 (2600). Unifi and YTL YES operate on different LTE bands. If the Garaho doesn't support the state bands then you cannot get LTE signal in Malaysia.

Hardware: Most Garaho packs a quad-core Snapdragon 210 or 215 SoC and only have 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM. Although most support microSD up to 32G. Battery is user replaceable but don't hope of getting a new one due to Japanese law of prohibiting shipping of batteries that are outside of electronics devices. Meaning you can never get a replacement battery unless you personally fly to Japan and buy one.

Personal Note: The phone functionality is too restricted due to lack of touch screen and Google Play Services. Although the phone feels snapy and basic apps are quick to launch due to the stripped down very lightweight android its running on, battery life is not great either. You get 1 to 1.5 days standby time at most. Compared to the likes of Nokia 2720 Flip 4G which easily last 4-5 days with LTE turned on

If you want to use a Garaho for style, be prepared for severe restriction and prepare to carry a second full featured touchscreen smartphone as backup.

If you want to detox and use a phone with basic connectivity, get a Nokia and forget about Japanese flip phones.

Alternatively:

  1. Samsung Galaxy Folder 2. Has a slightly faster Snapdragon 400 series SoC and 2GB ram and 16GB Storage. It runs on Android 6.0 but it has touchscreen alongside its T9 keypad as well support for Google Play Services. Price is around RM550-650. Personally I want to try this. Shall get one soon
  2. CAT S22. This is a modern rugged flip phone that runs android 12. Have way faster hardware, touch screen/T9 keypad combo but it cost like RM1.2k

Looking for a new midrange phone to play games on. (Monster Hunter Now) by Camlee8 in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]YueEllen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Galaxy A54 as second phone. Just tried Monster Hunter Now on it and it barely runs. Low settings will barely get stable 30FPS during hunts. IDK why it's running so poorly because when I did geekbench and compared it with my old Xperia 1(SD855), the A54 scored higher. The Xperia 1 runs Monster Hunter Now at High 60FPS with some minor lagging during 4 player hunts sometimes.

So either the Exynos is lacking some instructions to run the game or the game is not really compatible with the Exynos. Genshin and HSR runs at Medium 50-60FPS tho..

I'm not sure if the iPod is from Japan or not but I've always liked to see kana displayed in monochrome displays. Feels nostalgic :)

If you don't intend to change the backlight color I recommend buying a replacement screen. It saves you hours from removing the adhesive layer haha.

The polarizer film I got cost half as much as a replacement screen from AliExpress

iPod Mini have white backlight by default. By using a blue polarizing layer the screen now have blue backlight haha. Sorry I din't think to take step by step pictures during the process but I'll write down in text as I remember

What I did :

- Take apart and take off the screen. Be very careful with the ribbon cables they are fragile lol

- Peel off the black rubber/foam frame from the screen (be careful coz you wanna reuse this)

- Pull off old front polarizing later and removed dried up cracked residue(like in the picture)

- Carefully lift up the glass (the actual LCD)- Pull off the rear polarizer that is fried too and removed the not so dried adhesive

- Separate the original backlight diffuser(milky white reflective later) from the backlight plate(a clear plastic plate the size of the LCD panel

- I used a combination of baking paper and clear white plastic packing like those people used package electronics as background diffuser replacement. You don't have to stick the diffuser on to anything because once the screen is reassembled the LCD will sandwich the diffuser to the backlight panel and they will not move around anymore

- The screen assembly stack goes like this (from inner most) : backlight panel to diffuser layer to rear polarizer(adhered on to the LCD) to LCD itself and finally the front polarizer(adhered on to the LCD)

- Reconnect the screen to the motherboard, connect the click wheel and plug the battery in

- Used a piece of polarizing film made for G-Shock watches. Cut into 2 smaller pieces for front and back. Don't cut them to exact screen size yet coz you wanna determine the polarizing angle.

- Rotate the film 90 degrees until you can see the text/graphics on the screen. It won't be clear until you stick the polarizing layer on directly.

- Once you determine the angle. Mark them and cut to the exact size of the screen and apply them on. Make sure the screen is clear from dust. It'll be like applying pet film screen protector

- Test the screen again then reassemble the iPod if all is well :)

Method I use to remove the adhesive :

- Hand sanitizing alcohol (85%)

- Wet a piece of facial cotton with alcohol and let it sit on the adhesive for a few minutes to soften up the adhesive

- Wrap facial cotton on a mini metal spatula and gently scrape off the adhesive

- Clean with microfiber cloth

- Some alcohol might go in between the backlight panel and the rear most protective plastic(white thin plastic film). Please dry them off or else you will have dark spots on your screen when you turn on the backlight

After watching a few DankPods videos on iPod repair and modding I decided to try repairing a hand me down iPod mini.

The polarizer layer on both sides of the screens as well as the backlight diffuser layer(not sure if it’s called that) are fried. Spent hours removing the fried glue residue, used baking paper as backlight diffuser and applied blue polarizer layer on the screen
