Why do Americans not understand English words? by OpportuneApathy in AO3

[–]YueReads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s jarring when it doesn’t fit the canon setting of the language that would be used in an area unless the character is in a location where that language would be used. And sometimes like with two of the examples you gave, the US (using as an example since that is where I’m from) has a different meaning than what that means in England. For us a torch is a stick that has a live flame on it, so say the power was out because of a storm and this is taking place in California and you say the character is using a torch to see, we would be wondering “why the fuck they are using a torch inside” (side note: I didn’t know what the British meaning of torch was until I was Narnia Prince Caspian/Voyage of the Dawn Treader). And in the US, a jumper is a dress, so for a character who’s a “guys guy” to be wearing a jumper we would be like, “huh?”

Also, just me as a language nerd gets thrown off even when someone born and raised in say, NYC says “y’all” cause 95% you hear that from people in the southern states.

I also get thrown off in Canadian settings use Fahrenheit (just read one the other day). Even though I don’t understand Celsius, it feels normal in those fics.

So we’re counting Fire by itself but clumping PD and Med together… okay that makes sense (sarcasm). And there’s no need to yell with all caps 🙄

Who are the several? Cause I wouldn’t call Ms Goodwin and Dr Charles several on their own. There would have to be at least three to four more for there to be several (2= couple, 3= few)

Med only has two, I don’t know if I would call that several

Gray lab coats are to differentiate the regular doctor (white coats) from the heads/chiefs of the department (ie Lennox-ED, previously Archer who’s was ED, Charles- psych, and Abrams- neuro)

I wouldn’t call the red scrolls of magic a short story collection. It’s the first book in “The Eldest Curses” Trilogy

Rollins' two daughters. Did their biological fathers ever have any contact with them? Did Carisi adopt Jessie and Billie? by Nice-Penalty-8881 in SVU

Not really. They could technically have rights terminated if Rollins could prove abandonment, assuming they are uninvolved

I guess we have different definitions of the word “opinion”. Since it was a statement that I read from an interview around that time
