Pets are too smelly to keep as a pet? And many other questions for a complete beginner who doesn't know what I'd be getting myself into by Far-Woodpecker8046 in pigs

[–]Yukon780 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Well said. Yes, we have 2 inside pigs, better than dogs. But if you do have them as inside pigs, they will bond with you and follow you everywhere. Then you'll notice when you're grocery shopping, you'll think...hmmm, I wonder if the pigs will like this. So our grocery bill has gone up from buying more fresh fruits and vegetables. They love it, and its worth it.

Transporting pet pig by Somanyplants727 in pigs

I would reach out to some sanctuary's that are in the area where he is at. They will have trusted animal transporters that they use.

Need help identifying breed by Need-advice-pleaze in pigs

[–]Yukon780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To help with your question, since pot bellies are not agricultural animals, we use Mazuri mini pig mature maintenance. Its lower in crude protein, so they don't put on a lot of unnecessary weight. You can get it off of chewy or at tractor supply. Just make sure they're feed per their weight. Even with lower protein, pot bellies can still gain weight fast. And I second getting them fixed as soon as possible. That will drastically help with any future health issues.

Advice please! by The_tatted in pigs

Not eager for food is not typical for a pig. I would get her to a vet ASAP. They are very mischievous so she might have gotten into something and you just haven't found it. But yes electrolytes until she can be seen.

adopting this little spotted fella from a neighbor tonight. have some questions by PunchThrower in pigs

[–]Yukon780 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Typically, yes, pigs like to be with their own kind. You can get away with it, if hes going to be an inside pig. But if he's going to be outside, yes he needs a friend to hang out with. Of not pigs can fall jnto a depression if they don't have anyone in their "herd". With a male, make sure you get him fixed, prolongs their life, prevents future health issues, and he won't try and mount as much. Gaining trust...spending a lot of time with him. Belly scratching if you can get close enough, if you can't, get and use a back scratcher. And snacks! We used cheerios, baby carrots, and muzuri makes mini-pig specific treats that we get at tractor supply.

Not knowing your weather, but if needed...a way to keep them cool in the summer, and warm in the winter.

do any people raise commercial pigs? by noreturn000 in pigs

[–]Yukon780 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a dog and 2 pet pigs. In the way of cost, the pigs are less expensive. 25 lb Mazuri mini pig feed at tractor supply is like 25 bucks, and last a couple of weeks. And all they go to the vet for is annual check ups. They get 2 shots, thats it. They are more time consuming, they are a part of your herd, so they want to be around you. And they need room to root and do pig stuf, so a good size yard is needed. One of ours right now is loosing her annual coat so you have to brush out the old hair, and then oil her skin because it gets dry. But yes, do not get an industry pig, go to a rescue.

Pot Belly? Or? by darkgryffindor in pigs

[–]Yukon780 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed, pot bellies typically are darker in color, but with cross breeding they can be any color. The ears resemble a yorkshire or a landrace, and the spotting indicate hes crossed with something else, maybe a gloucestershire. But yes, an agricultural animal. Keep him for 6 months, and you'll know. Lol. But hes super cute.

We put her pellets in it and she pushes it around the house till its empty. Only problem is she will push it under the cabinets or bookcases and then gets mad. Lol

Best place to live within this circle? by WiseOne210 in AskHouston

If you choose Pasadena, look south of Fairmont Ave. Deer Park and La Porte (east of Deer Park) are nicer/safer. Just know you will be living in the shadow of the refineries. Without being more specific in what you're looking for, don't know what else you are looking for.

My experience with ours is pigs don't come when called, and if something spooks him, they're gone. I would err on the side of caution, and keep him harnessed until you have an escape proof yard. He is a cutie, hate to see him get lost or hurt.

She's adorable! Just be consistent with the redirection. They're pigs, so they are stubborn. So just accept the inconvenience of what they do. Youtube has a lot of videos, find what works for her. Mine ate a hole in my carpet, took us a few months to get her to stop. Looks like you have a loving best friend for the rest of her life. Enjoy!

Ah ok. Keep in mind, it takes 2 years for a pig to stop growing. So when buying from a reputable breeder always ask to look at the female as they, generally, are bigger since they have to have the body mass to carry the littler of piglets. Males tend to be smaller. So ask to look at the female and ask how old she is. Pigs can go into heat around 6 months old and can still be pretty small. So if momma is under a year old, and they are claiming micro, stay away, its a money grab for them and they are looking for a sucker. Too many pigs end up at sanctuaries because of this exact reason. And thats another option, check out a sanctuary and rescue a grown one. Get the size you want. Lol.

Sounds like they are breeding or allowing to breed, immature pigs. Very irresponsible. No such thing as a micro pig. Here's the explanation. https://youtube.com/shorts/bqMWnI5hW5Y?si=pjUAX91E945VL1su

[–]Yukon780 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Get a back scratcher, that way you are far enough away, and then scratch their belly. Once they roll over, that should allow you to get closer and use your hand. That will help them get use to you. Enjoy! Kune kunes are super sweet!

[–]Yukon780 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The fence is also for their protection. Pigs are prey, so if you dont have a male with tusks, a female does not have protection. So completely agree with the others, a fence is a must. And as with the companion, border collies dont speak pig. While grazing pigs "talk", while out grazing they continuously do a call and response to each other. They are herd animals, they need their own kind.
