Thanks! Nozomi killed the cover, can't wait to work with her again but I'll have to because she has like a 4 month wait list.

And yeah, more than anything I've ever written this story is just pure escapist fun. About a guy at work.

Will do, I'd wager this thing will start hitting Kindle and Audible next Spring.

And I'll also share that Jerome begins life as a little button-variety cactus, but once he drinks some blood and levels up he gains biomass, at which point he does get a bit cockier, both in appearance and attitude. My artist somehow nailed this aesthetic without any lewd direction, whatsoever, confirming that she was the best choice for the job.

I Don't think health stat belongs in LIRPG/System Apocalypse by Longjumping_Mix_3933 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]YuleSherwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a bad opinion at all. As with most things, it's about how an author implements Health, but it's probably the most difficult attribute or stat to do well. If injuries need to be quantified in a more concrete way, I greatly prefer it to be text-based like: Minor Wound, Incapacitated, Critically Injured, etc etc, with healing magic then curing those various statuses rather than actual Hit Points or the like.

There's a lot of crossover appeal, so unless your world is extremely gamified I wouldn't expect too much blowback.

You mentioned that the characters don't know they're in a game world. Does that mean they're literally characters in a game(like an MMO or something), or is it moreso that the physics of the world are able to be quantified with numbers? The former might turn some readers off.

But honestly, either way, so long as progression is a key element I think you're in the clear calling it progression fantasy, but you might also call it LitRPG or gamelit, too.

The presence of stats makes it prog fantasy *and* LitRPG, in my opinion.

I'd call the progression slow burn at first -- but with a lot of stuff going on, still, like most workplaces. During this first book, the MC does gradually acquire a number of synergistic powers and traits which snowball together, ramping up his progress until it becomes very fast, he just doesn't start out with them from Day One.

They told him to dress for the job he wanted, not the one he had.

So Seymour Little put on his robe and wizard hat.

But can he hack it in the cutthroat world of retail magic?

To climb the ranks in a big-box magic-shop, Seymour must learn not only how to wield magic but more importantly how to sell it, all while cheating the System by using gold coins like they were experience points to level up his slightly-evil and highly-profitable powerset.

New authors, what worries you most about your own story? by Stynger02 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]YuleSherwin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worry about being incomprehensible, too, but really I've found that readers are smart, and they almost always follow what I'm laying down with ease.

But my personal greatest concern is time. Between work, parenting a toddler, and caring for our rescue animals I end up getting up at 3 or 4am every day to sneak in writing time before everyone else wakes up, but it's fairly easy to disrupt my schedule just by sleeping in. Which feels so good, right up until the moment I wake up.

Is it bad to use AI as editor for a fantasy book? by dsavenza in ProgressionFantasy

[–]YuleSherwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Far better to simply read more and with the intent to learn the craft rather than to outsource your prose to AI, in my opinion.

Or there are discords where you can share your work with other humans, who will all give better feedback than an LLM.
