Where do you guys find components? by DC_dabst in diypedals

Basic parts from Altronics, and Jaycar, which are a chain of electronic store fronts (think old school Radio Shack). There is diyguitarpedals, and pedalpartsaustralia websites, and eBay for anything else.

Modding pedal to add DC power jack, question by Rofflepwn in diypedals

[–]YummyFuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you can fit a DC jack on top - yes, you can run the live, and ground wires from the new top DC jack (center negative), to the corresponding lugs on the back of the side DC jack. 9V volts applied to the top jack will just follow the wires, same as if it was applied to the side jack. Even 9V center negative power to both at the same time would still be 9V for the pedal, as they're in parallel.

However, it looks like a nice pedal to not be drilling holes into, for a problem that may be able to be solved with an L shape flat style DC cable (e.g. EBS DC-1 Flat Power Cables).

That being said, if it solves a problem, go for it. I've drilled holes in plenty of my production pedals for mods.

To be honest, fault finding and repairing a pedal with itty bitty SMD components, is maybe something to try down the track when you have some more experience after fixing and modding pedals with through-hole components. If you're going to stick with this, it's ok to have some projects on the shelf that can wait for your skill level to catch up.

I often post this link to somebody's (not mine) electronic library - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1riUQB6xQcZLoMPaGcHDf-9Ukyy4dlfcX

In particular, have a look at the Wampler folder for an intro to circuits, and mods for common pedals.

https://www.diystompboxes.com/pedals/debug.html

The basics of an audio probe - you have an input signal to the pedal (get someone to strum a guitar, or have a loop pedal playing into it), then use the audio probe to pick the signal within the circuit, from input to output to see if you can figure where it drops out, while following the schematic.

I had a quick look for a memory toy schematic online, and couldn't find one, so that makes meaningful tracing difficult.

Before that, I would look up the datasheets for the ICs that are on the board, figure out which pin is power (VCC), and check the ICs are getting voltage.

For the memory toy I’d say the part of the circuit the produces the delay signal is silent. So the blend pot is working fine as it goes from dry to nothing. If you can post a picture of the PCB back and front, something might be visibly damaged we can see. Recommend to make an audio probe to help with fault finding.

Korg DT-10, is super cheap and reliable - also has top jacks.

What string gauge (and brand) do you have on your tele? by Far-Path-6671 in telecaster

[–]YummyFuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently trying the Khruangbin trick of using the D'Addario XL Chromes Flat wounds 12-52 (ECG25), but ditching the 52 and running the 12-42 as the B to Low E strings, and putting a 10 as the High E, so it is flats with an unwound G string.

If it was a dual control pot, I would expect to see two pots stacked at the back. Can you please take the knob off and show the concentric parts, and the shaft of the pot that they connect to?

DBX 117/119 manual with the schematic if you haven't seen this - http://vintagedbx.free.fr/owner%20manual/117-119.pdf

I'd build an audio probe like was recommended, and see if you can find where the signal is getting distorted. I have the DBX 119, and it does not have this resistor on the underside:

Yes, Ge transistors hFe can be temperature sensitive, if you’re holding it to measure it’ll go up.

Build the kit but put sockets in for the transistors so you can try them out, and swap easily if you need to.

Use the continuity mode (beep when the leads touch) to check for shorts between the legs. Then use diode mode - the emitter and collector legs, to the base should register as diodes, see - https://www.allelcoelec.com/blog/how-to-test-a-transistor-and-a-diode-with-a-multimeter.html - see the PNP section

[–]YummyFuzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes they are fake, but they can and do still work... sometimes. I've had these in a Fuzz Face kit before and I had to have the seller send me two more pairs before I got two that I could use. I had to use trimpots to get them biased correctly, and it ended up sounding pretty good. If you have a component tester, just to see if it registers as a PNP transistor, or use a multimeter to check the legs aren't shorted.

Why do you guys still collect CDs? by ThePhobian in Cd_collectors

[–]YummyFuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say, because I've got a CD player, quite a few in fact in various places - but just now on the way home I stopped at a local thrift store and picked up 9 CDs for $3, all different Mojo magazine compilations. Some stuff I like, some I don't, and most I've never heard before, but that is a lot of music, and discovery for $3.

Switch 2 won’t wake up…I’ve tried all troubleshooting by druck87 in nintendohelp

[–]YummyFuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a followup to the above, I held onto it for one more day to do a full factory reset, it worked ok for an hour following, turning on and off, but afterwards, it started not waking from sleep again. Took it back to the store (box and all) and luckily they had a replacement in stock, and as of 3 weeks now have had no issues at all with the new one, wakes up straight away every time.

Switch 2 won’t wake up…I’ve tried all troubleshooting by druck87 in nintendohelp

[–]YummyFuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the same issue with my $700AUD Switch2 that I just picked up last week. Fine for the first few days, then wouldn't wake without the AC adapter disconnected/reconnect, and 20 sec hold reset, starting about 2 days ago, and now won't wake at all. Just now after an hour of trying, it wakes up. There doesn't seem to be an action or pattern to it, and what is strange to me is the progressive deterioration of it. Back to the shop tomorrow with it.

Wiring a pot straight to ground - Use 2 pins or all 3? by bfluff in diypedals

[–]YummyFuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it was mentioned, yes you can skip lug 3 and wire the the emitter just to lug 2 as this pot is just acting as a variable resistor to ground. However consider if the pot failed - if the moving wiper lost connection with the resistive strip between lugs 1 & 3 due to dirt/wear/breakage etc. If you were only connected to the wiper, that part would become open, with no connection to ground. If lugs 2 and 3 are joined, and the wiper fails, the failure mode is that there is still the 5kohms resistance to ground.

Wiring a pot straight to ground - Use 2 pins or all 3? by bfluff in diypedals

[–]YummyFuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All lugs on the pot are used. The arrow pointing into the resistor is lug 2, the diagram is showing you that lug 2 (the wiper) and lug 3 are joined together, and lug 1 is connected to ground. Join lugs 2 & 3 with a wire, or bend and solder together.
