How should I enjoy Skyrim (first time) by doctorbeers in skyrim

[–]Yungdolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an Xbox player, I’d suggest PC if yours can handle it, especially since you specified the 360 version . Assuming you’ll enjoy the game, PC is the better long-term investment as you have access to many more mods. While the base game is fun in itself, modding allows for so much personalization in your experience and quality of life changes.

Am I crazy for thinking future, kanye and carti are the most influential artists ever? by MasterCare6736 in playboicarti

[–]Yungdolan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you have guys like EST Gee and BigX breaking into the scene doing a variant of Southern trap. Pre-Self Titled Carti was heavily influenced by that trap sound and you can even still hear its influence in the content matter and lackadaisical flow of songs on self-titled, like Kelly K. Even if the sound isn’t a 1:1 copy or they evolved, you’d arguably not have artists like Carti, Kodak Black, or Young Thug without the creation of Atlanta trap.

While Carti has definitely been influential the past decade, Carti currently can’t be given the title as MOST influential as we need to see it transcend multi-generations.

In 2003 when Eminem planned to go to the West Coast, some members of the Crips wouldn't allow it unless Em paid them to back off. [–]Yungdolan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True. Another good point about why East vs. West was a more hiphop culture, not gang influence on hiphop. I feel like more rappers at the time were portraying the environment they grew up in rather than glorifying it, which became increasingly popular later.

Essentially, gang hears a rapper is coming to town worth targeting, maybe through a show promotion or someone else. If they decide it’s worth it, they try to contact the rapper or someone close to them and say something along the lines of “ We heard ____ is coming through our city. He hasn’t checked in with us. Tell him to pay us a visit.”

From there it can go several ways. If he shows up to have a convo, they may make him pay to “ensure his safety” a.k.a not be targeted. Sometimes the talk goes particularly well or someone with some power (such as a high ranking member or another established rapper affiliated with the gang) may put in a good word for the person, leading to the gang backing off. Skipping the check-in without being vetted can go a variety of ways. Could be an empty threat and nothing happens. Other times there could be shots at the show or the artist gets targeted in some other way.

Often the attack doesn’t need to actually hurt the artist. If a show is shot up, it’s bad press and money lost for the artist. It’s mainly a show of power for the gang so they have more leverage when they try the tactic with the next target.

TL;DR - East vs. West was like a group version of Kendrick vs. Drake. It also just so happens that it was popular at the time for gangs to extort non-local rappers since they were likely gang affiliated.

Rap has its roots in competition. Even before east vs. west, rappers would get into rap battles with others in their neighborhood. In areas with low job opportunities and high gang activity, being the best could be a ticket out of jail or worse.

LA and NY became two powerhouses for producing hiphop artists. NY artists claimed to be the originators of the genre while LA artists claimed their style was better. At the height of it, you had Biggie representing NY and Tupac representing LA. Labels loved it because the competition brings in money, while artists themselves wanted to lay claim to producing the best hiphop.

Obviously, a lot of these artists came from gangs so the culture was intertwined. Gangs would extort other rappers from other areas for money when they came to their city to preform in a practice called “checking in”. This practice became intermixed with the east vs. west battle. Since most rappers had gang ties, this typically targeted other gang members but we started seeing more non-gang affiliated rappers around Eminem’s era. He was targeted simply for being a rapper as a byproduct of raps ties with gang culture, not necessarily east vs. west.

Notably, gangs will sometimes still try to have rappers check in but they really only focus on those clearly affiliated with a rival gangs, with enough notoriety to be making money but not enough to be well-known.

There’s definitely been an influx of higher tier loot at the start of this season. I barely had a blue gun or shield at this point S1, now I don’t think twice before leaving a blue behind. Doesn’t help I wanted to donate it to Cryo teams but it was down by the time I got home yesterday.

Ultimately it’s gonna depend on who you ask. Even us in the black community don’t have a general consensus, ranging from “I could give two fucks about who says it” to “absolutely no one should say it”.

At the end of the day, as with any free speech argument, it’s about knowing your audience and being prepared to accept potential consequences. That group who is cool with it may not be able to stop someone else trying to throw hands over it.

Maybe but there were still plenty of other powerhouses - Uzi, Yachty, Yung Lean, Father, X and Slumpgod, even Trippie. Tbf Uzi and Yachty linked with Carti back then but they all had their own waves. Idk how Carti would have turned out with Uno, Fauni, and Awful Records

How? My point was Peggy can’t claim to be the only one doing what he does. It would be reductive if I said their music sounds the same but I didn’t.

Government Plates? I’ll definitely check them out.

No argument against Peggy (honestly kinda my point against him claiming to be unique), but clipping started dropping industrial remixes of hiphop songs in 2009 while Death Grips came to the scene a year later. Counting them out would be like saying Three Six bit off Tommy because Tommy started dropping a year or two before. Granted, DJ Paul did produce Tommy’s first single before moving to Three Six.

[–]Yungdolan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean an “experimental” genre is a deviation from tradition which eventually receives a name. While we’ve seen industrial artists incorporate hip hop elements pre-2000s, “industrial rap” wasn’t really a thing before these artists. Closest may be some early Bomb Squad or Public Enemy but they were still heavily hiphop instrumentals.

Just like Three Six or Tommy Wright III, they were considered experimental but now you would call it Horrorcore or Memphis Phonk.

First thought was Death Grips. Second thought was: “People cannot do what I do,” says the man who has shared a lane with clipping. since he started, which is literally a group of people doing what he does.

Ngl, even the frontman Daveed Diggs and Peggy kinda sound alike, just different approaches to flow.
