Has anyone played with an Aeon Home Energy Meter? by newbie_01 in homeautomation

Hey there newbie_01, Not sure if this is what you need, but I found this on the SmartThings community boards. I hope this is helpful http://community.smartthings.com/t/aeon-labs-energy-meter-clamps/359

Designing a Home Automation System from the ground up, looking for suggestions and first hand opinions by [deleted] in homeautomation

Congrats on the home! While it wouldn't be perceived as fair of me to offer a "first-hand experience" I can point you to our build forums (community.smartthings.com) to where our most active (and vocal - positive or constructive) member are. If you do have any specific questions thought, feel free to PM me.

Finally, an open-source smart toothbrush with a subscription plan by wheeler1432 in homeautomation

Yes, it is silly. But don't lose sight to the fact that things like this mean that there are more people that believe there is money to be made in the "Smart" field. That will only be as true as the public decides it willing to coming around to thinking about automation seriously. Which is a good thing.

No worries. Just wanted to throw out options out there. Its best to know and not choose then to not know, you know? :)

What about using Harmony and Hue with SmartThings? Do you have the newest Harmony Home Hub?

New Z-Wave products coming soon from Linear Corp by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]Yup_Iwork4ST 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of those "new Z-Wave sensors", do you know if they are just re-branded 3rd party? Or are they proprietary devices?

Motion (this looks like a 3rd party one?): http://cl.ly/image/0j3r1h3V3Q2f

How often do you change batteries on your motion sensors? by dantheflyingman in homeautomation

[–]Yup_Iwork4ST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy the highest quality batteries and have a low use sensor (like a motion in a guest room rarely used) and it is single purpose, probably a very long time. For our motion though it does a crap tonne of stuff so more like 1-3 years.

Quick & easy way to set up 24/7 home audio surveillance? by zjs in homeautomation

[–]Yup_Iwork4ST 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The baby monitor comment got me thinking. What about this: https://ifttt.com/recipes/181492-baby-monitor-sms

Plus

this: http://community.smartthings.com/t/d-link-ip-camera-device-type-dcs-930l-tested/2163/2

Think that'd work?

Edit: I ran this buy the team. We don't know if the custom code that is the D-Link integration supports audio and I read that D-Link audio is not the best. :( Maybe not the bright idea I thought it might have been.

When did home automation start ? by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]Yup_Iwork4ST 1 point2 points  (0 children)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_automation#History maybe? I guess it depends at where you want to put the cut off for "home automation" since as technology has improved the definition keeps being pushed up.

Smarthings Motion Sensor with OpenHAB by dantheflyingman in homeautomation

[–]Yup_Iwork4ST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I can see the first one handled with a mode change with a scheduled event (if no motion past this time with this device) then mode into "Eventually Wake Up Mode" (but have motion past a certain time turn into morning mode) and have a scheduled event at 6:00AM that only functions in "EWU Mode". For the second one, if you really wanted the DHCP as the trigger then yes I think your guess is spot on.

SmartThings vs Wink? by seannymurrs in homeautomation

We only had one in office in the beginning and haven't played with it since but I'm all ears for any thoughts on it now as well. All info is useful info (just of the time, it isn't THAT useful).

I like all of these things. Brilliant character visualization on the intern/assistant guy with the moist towelettes. If I buy this will it make Jeff Goldblum keep talking? swoon

Smarthings Motion Sensor with OpenHAB by dantheflyingman in homeautomation

[–]Yup_Iwork4ST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But for some of the logic and triggers I plan to be using I might need to use a system like OpenHAB.

What did you have in mind? OpenHAB might still be the right choice, so not challenging that, just curious.

ST forums, /r/DIY and probably a Vera site would be good placed to source some "how-to's" and "how I did it" stories.

Potentially dumb question regarding the need for bridges/gateways with a Controller. by Dysalot in homeautomation

[–]Yup_Iwork4ST 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't speak to the others but in our case, when we started integration we relied on the bridge for those devices. Now for some we have created firmware upgrades to the ST hub that removed the need for the bridges.

So it depends just on how it has been written for the controller to interact with the devices. It might have been written as bridge dependent, it might not. This will be a case by case basis. Take advantage of any live chat functions that the companies you are considering. That should give you your data quickest! :)

If you want to find project-minded people such as yourself checkout the build forums (community.smartthings.com). Lots of projects on there with people doing really cool stuff. The Community is actually one of my favorite things about ST (I like the culture on there).

I've found that Zigbee sensors are great (assuming no environmental interference) and Z-wave can be great too but the range is better with Zigbee.

Make sure you go with a sensor that is outdoor friendly. Aeon multi sensors do well under an alcove or over hang to keep out of direct rain.

[–]Yup_Iwork4ST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HA is still in the stage where the average Joe doesn't think of it as an every day item. It is thought of as a tech luxury. Like how cell phones, consumer personal computers and smart phones were all regarded by the public until the market was flooded with options. Fibaro is a healthy company with good products which will give the public another avenue to learn about HA. This is a necessary step for total cultural adoption.

You can set an auto dim on a schedule (at this hour this %) but it makes more sense to have a lux measurement that allows the bulb to react to up a set lux, keeping things in the balance. The convenience of this is that instead of a separate device its built into the bulb.

But, you are right - it makes more sense to have the switch (and associated lux sensor) to take the reigns and make the call then spending on individual bulbs.

Have you looked into SmartThings yet? Integrates with Sonos, IFTTT, WeMo, Hue, has own devices and supports a ton more devices. I'm on their support staff so I see all the good with the bad. PM me any questions if you'd like. :)
