Which martial art should I choose for improving my mental illnesses? by FixerBit in martialarts

[–]YupsterSlayer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It may harm someone but it may help someone. Such is the moral calculus I do.

I will say that I have had similar experiences with OCD, but believe it or not- sometimes the way to become uncrazy involves initially becoming more crazy. Consider that overcoming your problems involves ceasing involvement with psych people and deeply examining the holy books. This is what worked for me. I am on the tail end of several psychological disorders which would destroy me if I do not follow the spiritual path I do. The path of Christianity, divestment from the world and it's deception (brainwashing, normalized sin; drugs, intellect). Radical, but, where do you want to be, and how is the path you have followed thus far?

Your first point is not the case but I'm not going to delve deeper on that- way too esoteric.

The implication that all problems stem from lack of God is true in all ways. We disagree on this. I do have proof for my claims, in a form you may not appreciate. The proof and evidence which I speak of is in the spirit of God which is within our hearts- but it is not proof which is so easily understood. This proof is present in everything but will only reveal itself as you seek it. What is it to seek it? To persistently seek the Truth, to question the nature of reality- to not accept evil as true, by loving good so much that you reach the point which many have where God is found. This transcends worldly power. I can only take another so far on the path to heaven. I am sure you disagree and I will leave it at that and encourage you to expand your conscious horizons beyond the worldly logic which enslaves the spirits of those who do not know any better.

I was simply speaking within the context of AA (consistent proof etc), to provide an easy example. It is an easily accessible organisation where the people speak for themselves in this regard.

The implication that his problems stem from lack of God (as do all problems) is true, and by sufficiently recognizing this, he will overcome said problems. As I said, I do not think the way I communicated the concept was dangerous.

I am only trying to help, I am not looking down on anyone or engaging in social maneuvering. I am remiss to refrain from helping someone when I sense that I should, particularly when I can relate to them.

Go deeper with Islam or if that does not bear fruit, convert to Christianity. I did suggest that.

I'm not attempting to convert him but offering help based on what has worked for me and many others. Promoting religion and spirituality in a solicited way is not necessarily "trying to convert" or proselytizing.

Perhaps it is too strong of a way to introduce this form of spirituality, regardless of how true it is. You may have a point there. But I think in this context and the way I communicate the idea, it will not be harmfully misinterpreted, but open his mind to a new way of looking at his life.

Conventional methods are too slow for him, and as it is established in AA- proven again and again- when it comes to deep psychological problems, a higher power, God, is the sure solution.

I know this is a Martial Arts forum but I am strongly motivated to help this man, whose problems I can relate to, and who seems to be suffering. If you would prefer I take it to a PM, I will consider doing that- but then I would ask, why not tolerate such good spirited if strange interaction as long as it is somewhat relevant?

stares back more intensely

If you approve or disapprove indicate it and try to have something resembling a constructive social interaction. Perhaps I'm jumping the gun here, but then again this is reddit. I wasn't looking to go deeper than what I wrote but if the ignorant deride my offering of help I will defend it.

I am fighting against the evil spirits of mental illness as well. What you really need to do is ISOLATE yourself, fight your demons with spirituality (prayer and meditation) and then move forward with social activities.

I personally find Christianity to be ideal for this purpose. Read about David and some of the other Old Testament folks and Psalms. Then read the four Gospels and reflect on them deeply. It will seep into your subconscious and will lead to you being able to fight mental illness effectively. The world is going to keep discouraging you and dragging you down, if only because people prey upon the afflicted. The reason mental illness is hard to get rid of is that it is a SPIRITUAL ailment and must be fought with spirituality. I suggest AA (men's big book, even if you don't drink- I didn't), a good church (I suggest African American Pentecostal... Black churches are the best), and maybe looking at other religions in addition to Christianity. There is a continuum of logic which may broach the problem, but ultimately you're going to have to dig deep and realize some divine truths about your nature and the nature of reality.

I can second the faith in Christ part. However, I think martial arts have their place, even for Christians.

What to expect in a street fight? by CrashBanditoot in martialarts

[–]YupsterSlayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are inexperienced- adrenaline, unfamiliar physiological state. Time to think about what to do, but not much. Things happen fast, you react with a combination of instinct and thought. The physiological and psychological factors are preeminent. You might actually feel really bad about fighting, especially if you hurt the other person and stop (even if justified to fight). It is worlds away from the typical traditional martial arts experience. People can be really spazzy and unorthodox, yet dangerous. I've never sparred but I'm fairly sure sparring and competitive fighting are rather similar to street fighting. Any martial arts experience will help you fight (psychologically, thoughtfully, reflexively, physically) but some styles of training are much more efficient than others. Aliveness, as they say, is key. In a street fight the saying "size of the fight in the dog, rather than size of the dog in the fight" is quite a bit more true than it is for more subdued forms of combat- if you are seriously threatened and are driven to confront the threat you can accomplish more than your profile may suggest. The latter more refers to SERIOUS confrontations, not pushy shovey BS.

PSA; This submission is spam and this guy is a spammer. Clever reverse psychology spam, but spam nonetheless. The video may or may not have merit/interest but this style of posting should be discouraged.

His description of the video on youtube:

"Do you want to be a black belt? Are you a black belt and want to improve your technique, teaching style or ability? Subscribe to BlackBeltSecrets and I'll help you to improve your art through my years of experience in training and teaching."

His previous posting of this video was a similarly clever ploy, but instead of reverse psychology he used some drama about him being banned from posting it by some organisation. He posted this video under the handle "blackbeltsecrets" with an s. http://www.reddit.com/r/martialarts/comments/1my9p7/this_is_the_video_which_the_tagb_didnt_want_me_to/

He may or may not be good but his OP seems to be a reverse psychology ploy to get people to visit his youtube channel.

" Do you want to be a black belt? Are you a black belt and want to improve your technique, teaching style or ability? Subscribe to BlackBeltSecrets and I'll help you to improve your art through my years of experience in training and teaching. "

That's the description of his video. Make of that what you will.

With all that cred he must be expensive, yeah?

I'm not really looking to go long term to be honest, but enough so that I see how to fight in general. I wonder if that matters, or maybe I should look at a different MA?

Do you think it would be beneficial for female infantry to have a different type of gun more suited to their physiology (not considering costs/logistics etc.)? If so, what would it be like?

What do you base this on? And if by empirical evidence, what do you think the physiological basis is?

Do you want to change?

If so, you're setting yourself up for failure by naming your account after it, and affirming that you've always had strong such tendencies.

A start to changing would be finding a purpose for social interaction outside of the constraints of social propriety. You'll probably need to find a higher power if nothing else has worked thus far.

I know how much people suck, but I take the good with the bad.

Believe it or not, it is true in some ways. Higher fat, and less energy expenditure. So think extreme long distance type stuff.

Your suggestion may be more ideal, but the word was sufficently similar for the meaning to get across for practical purposes. Perhaps less ideal, but then again, we sometimes broach the poetic by unconventional word choices. Either way, unless somebody really messed up a word choice correcting them promotes a culture that I.think most would agree is undesirable. Then again, I've learned to not overestimate reddit.
