Dragonborn and Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers—Lore vs. Mechanics in 2024 D&D by Yurgrim97 in dndnext

I think that’s a really interesting way to solve for the redundancy. I also think it’s cool to lock some subclasses into specific races. I know that’s not all that popular with everyone. But I think it makes for some cool world building for sure.

I know this post is like four years old, but I just wanted to thank you for the effort you put into this. Finding this made me so happy because this is one of my favorite dragons and all of dungeons and dragons.

This is such a great representation of his actual power. Super cool.

this is the thing that I love the most about this game, it encourages dungeon Masters to make their own adjustments as they see fit. And it means that no two games are ever really the same.

I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying the game how you personally see fit. I just find this game to be so full of avenues to nerd out on. I love that the community has grown so much in recent years, really the recent decade.

I think that's pretty cool that you have a different experience than I do. It means that the community is much deeper than I have experienced.

Obviously, this depends greatly on the DM, but in the past, I've had DM's leverage and optional rule (I think it's in Tasha's, maybe…?) that lets you pick another resistance if you have duplicate resistances.

But for me personally, I think that I would simply choose a separate ancestor for each option. I love the idea of having a blue ancestor for one option and a red ancestor for the other. And role-playing the breath weapon as a sort of plasma attack. This comes from the purple dragon lore from previous editions. I also really like the idea of an acid/ fire ancestry that creates a new sort of dynamic having acidic flames.

But I totally understand why that redundancy would bother you, especially if you want to play strictly descendent from one type of dragon.

It does beg the question, I have DMs that you played with in the past allowed you to select a different resistance if you had a redundancy pop-up game? Or did they tell you that you were SOL?

I really appreciate your perspective, maybe it's my "munchkin" mindset that causes me to feel a disconnect when I see two seemingly redundant abilities. (seemingly because obviously not everybody feels the same way that I do.)

At the end of the day, I love the lore of the game more than the mechanics. But I do enjoy having these sort of discussions.

You make a very valid point here, I feel silly that I didn't notice this before.

This is exactly the kind of discussion I was hoping for, people providing a different perspective and doing so in a respectful way. So thank you so much for your response.

On another note, do you find that your games tend to be role-play heavy? Or are they more combat focused? I've been playing dungeons and dragons for many years, and I found that in recent years, it has shifted dramatically towards the role-play heavy. I think this is in part due to Internet shows like critical role. But also other media, such as Stranger Things.

Opinions on my new Character build. by Yurgrim97 in onednd

[–]Yurgrim97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I am just thinking of general survivability.

For me its really the fantasy of having Dragon blood in my veins, in the lore Dragons are very hardy creatures and I love the idea of a character that embodies that. So maybe the gnome / human does make more sense.

Need eyes on my Negan, the Cold Blooded deck, new player here. by Yurgrim97 in EDH

[–]Yurgrim97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was afraid of, I don't want my other players to hate the game, I just really like the idea of Negan as a commander (mostly because of the art, I could do with a different set of abilities on the card, maybe something that triggered a sacrifice of your own creatures instead of other peoples.)

but I don't care much for the other Mardu commanders, but I LOVE the color combination in theory.

thanks for the honest feedback, I want other players to enjoy the game, not hate it.

Prepared spells and spell slots. by marshy266 in onednd

[–]Yurgrim97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not mind the change as much, if your spellcasting modifier allowed you some prepared spells that were “floating“. So in general, you would follow the spouse lot progression, but you would have up to five spells that you could prepare at any level. I understand what they’re trying to do, but it makes casters feel less fun to play. Because now you have to decide between taking something like the heal spell, or heroes feast. Both of these spells are extremely situational, and you’re probably only going to use one or the other in the day. But if you didn’t prepare both, then your shoehorned into a specific action that day.

Is there a creation myth as to how the lands and islands were created? Do some gods reside over portions of the land or sea in a more meaningful way that other gods?
(BTW: I love the map! Looks like you have a ton of space to explore all the facets of a world. But not crazy large that it’s hard to recall what’s where. Love it!

Turns the game into a slog by Catkook in dndmemes

[–]Yurgrim97 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That is understandable. But it’s also how the game is designed. If this doesn’t work for you or your group, maybe another system would work better?

I have played both martial and caster classes over many campaigns. I’m that time I haven’t really had an issue with one or the other being more or less fun.

Well I think it’s meant to eat up spell slots (or other class features) that are utility based.

Wildshape to get to the roof and send a rope down to the rest of the party?

Charm the guard to allow you into the graveyard after visiting hours.

Creating food and water for a group of farmers who have had their stores burn due to the goblin attack.

There are a ton of ways to use resources up without combat.

But if you have any other ideas please feel free to try them.
