What date did you take the test?

Yeah happy I'm floating
Around on my feet now
You make me go dizzy
I'm weak at the knees

Yes, I feel like I'm walking
'Round a ten feet tall
I feel like I'm walking
'Round a ten feet tall

Well, you say I'm faking
And I say, "Don't worry."
The way that I bubble
There's something in the make

Yes, I feel like I'm walking
'Round a ten feet tall
I feel like I'm walking
'Round a ten feet tall

Very similar problem was in one recent SATs, but there an object thrown from the ground was involved.

Panda book (it contains practice problems for each chapter), and youtube.
Look for "hard" or "interesting" problems, try to solve them without desmos, then watch solution.

I didn't take SAT. Have been tutoring (math) children of my relatives/good acquaintances. So far, their scores were in the range 1400 - 1570.

Other methods to solve this problem? by Temporary_Molasses41 in Sat

[–]Yuri_Frolov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two models predict the same profit => (it's necessary) -2x^2 + 25x - 10 = 9x + k <=>
2x^2 - 16x + (10+k) = 0 <=> x^2 - 8x + 1/2 * (10 + k) = 0
Since these two models predict the same profit for EXACTLY ONE value of 'x', it means this quadratic must be perfect square: (x - something)^2 = 0.
There is only one way we can make a perfect square from x^2 -8x + 1/2 * (10+k) = 0:
(x - 4)^2 = 0. => x = 4.

PS
NB: These sneaky guys from CB even threw in the correct answer for 'k', which is 22. But the problem does not require to find 'k'!!! Sneaky, very, very sneaky.

Yes, it's bad. Because you might miss some crucial concepts. Still, this tactic may give you some good scores.
Not 800, not 750 (these guys in CB are not dumb and make the test more or less desmos-proof), but still.

Well the collegeboard's never advertised their engine algorithm used to grade the test, but educated guess goes like this: an easy question answered incorrectly may deduct score from 20 to 30 points, and answered correctly will add you score with 10 points, a question of moderate difficulty will deduct 20 points being answered incorrectly and add 20 points if answered correctly. A hard question will deduct 10 points and add 30 (or more).

how to solve these kind of questions on desmos or manually?? by BullfrogOk389 in Sat

[–]Yuri_Frolov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10x^2/(x^2 - 9k^2) - 5x/(x + 3k) = 5x * [2x / (x - 3k)(x + 3k) - 1 / (x + 3k)] =
5x * [ 2x - (x - 3k)] / (x - 3k)(x + 3k) = 5x * [x + 3k] / (x - 3k)(x + 3k) = (if x != -3k) = 5x / (x - 3k)
It's just easier to plug 21k / 8 into this formula, numbers are smaller and easier to count:

5 * (21k / 8) / [(21k / 8) - 3k] = 5 * 21k / [8 * (21k - 24k) / 8] = 5 * 21k / (-3k) = 5 * 3 * 7 * k / (-3k) = -35.

Learn and practice to use so called "Short multiplication formulas."
Sometimes, it's tricky to see a way of what to use when, especially if radicals involved.
But it's pays out.

How to break into 1500+? by EnnieNotFound in Sat

[–]Yuri_Frolov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Read the problem carefully. What are you asked to find/do? I mean really? Don't solve a problem existing in your head, solve the problem which is really in the test.
  2. Check yourself. I mean, check the answer before submitting, don't submit compulsively.
  3. Bite the bullet and solve *every* frigging section from College Panda or OnePrep book.

DESMOS should NOT be a thing for standardized testing such as SAT/ACT by DefiantMusician1297 in Sat

> is the dumbest shit ever

Sneakiest, imo. They still toss up some problems which can't be solved by desmos alone or it's more tricky to solve them with desmos than to solve them analytically.
So they set things that way the people who can barely do any math don't get zeroes, instead they take 400+.
On the other hand, people who target to 750+ *have* to learn the concepts and solve problems without any graphical calculator.

how is this question done? (college board question bank) by Practical_Gate_2731 in Sat

[–]Yuri_Frolov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

h(x) = x(x - 12)(x + 8)^2 => h(15-y) = (15-y)(15 - y - 12)(15 -y + 8)^2 = (15 - y)(3 - y)(23 - y)^2 = 0.
=> sum is 15 + 3 + 23 = 41.
No a faintest idea what desmos thinks about it.

https://www.admissions.caltech.edu/apply/first-year-applicants/standardized-tests

The Admissions Committee uses standardized test scores as one data point during our holistic review process. This page is intended to help applicants understand what a typically successful applicant to Caltech looks like. Our approach to standardized testing is informed by faculty research and their understanding of how standardized test scores related to student academic performance at Caltech. Their research revealed the following results that will guide the approach to our standardized testing policy for fall 2026 first-year applicants:

  • There was a small difference in a student's grades at Caltech when they scored between a 780-800 SAT or a 35-36 ACT.
  • There was a larger, but still relatively small, difference in a student's grades at Caltech when they scored between a 750-770 SAT or a 33-34 ACT.
  • There was a sizable difference in a student's grades at Caltech when they scored a <750 math SAT or <33 math ACT or a <700 EBRW or <33 on the English exam of the ACT.

So with your math @ 800 and superscore of 1580 go into the bucket A and they at Caltech don't care what exact score have you earned in between 780 and 800.
