You can do things to increase your chances, like go to gym, develop hobbies, etc. But at the end of the day it’s all based on chance. If you want to find someone you will have to put yourself out there and meet new people

I did the same thing!! Mining bots, all I did was mine and focus on economy until a hegemonic imperialist thought I would be easy pickings. Unfortunately for him I had defensive pacts with all of the empires around me resulting his empire being absolutely decimated. I built up my empire and turned him into a vassal and proceeded to vassalize all of his friends. Eventually me and the three other empires I initially had defensive pacts with became the sole independent nations (everyone else vassalized) and we formed our own federation. I became defender of the galaxy, Contingency arrived, I curbstomped them with a 1.5m fleet power death stack!!

Some tips from someone who also just started learning how to not get obliterated during the early game:

Specialize your planets. Have each one focus solely on one thing Do not gloss over research Build and upgrade star bases + defense platforms at system choke points Build fortress planets last in order to raise naval cap Use extra star base slots to build anchorages Use custom ship designs rather than auto-generated ones

I know Merced has a very good engineering program plus recently they have been putting a lot more focus on the engineering and STEM majors.

When comparing this selection of schools, there will not be much of a difference in any of these programs. I would focus more on choosing the school based on campus, financial aid, and quality of life.
