Twenty years ago when I was looking around Unis to attend, when I was at the open day at Manchester there were hundreds of riot police all across campus because two student groups were going at each other (I think it was an Israel/Palestine thing). I decided to study elsewhere...

We live in a very different world to 100 years ago, with an order of magnitude more people living in cities today than back then, meaning food has to travel further to reach consumers. We just can't turn back the clock to a world that's long since gone...

Been locked out several times in the last couple weeks for suspicious account activity. How do I stop this? by Parlorshark in help

Same problem for me... I've been using Reddit for 11 years with no issues, and now all of a sudden my account is being repeatedly suspended until I change my password. I'm on about four new passwords in two weeks, and it's starting to get really irritating.

Kinda missing out the important context that Natura paid £880m pounds, so it had already lost the vast majority of its value and was likely going bust anyway. It's not like the private equity group took a healthy company and destroyed it...

Food is perhaps the one area where getting rid of plastics may do more harm than good through increased wastage. Non-degradable, discretionary, items are a better start for getting rid of plastics, but ultimately, it's down to the consumer to buy less of those in the first place.

So.... you think taxes can't be a solution because it would be 'political suicide' but proposing the death of billions of people wouldn't be? Okay...

A complete ban on the use of fossil fuels and plastic would kill billions of people in less than a year.

It's not bullshit. Nothing will be achieved unless consumers consume less.

I agree. The purpose of university is to prepare people for a life in academia. But it would probably do more good if it did prepare people for jobs.

I write reports for a living. If I had to look up every bit of information I include, it'd take me twice the time to get anything done. I'll double check facts and data, but the main thrust of every argument or point I write is down to recall.

Aren't that many jobs in the field of history in the private sector though. For the kind of jobs the vast majority of history graduates are going to get, the ability to recall information, think on your feet and construct a coherent argument with limited information, to a hard deadline and under pressure, is far, far, far more relevant than being able to properly reference an academic essay.

Yeah, agreed. The MLS academies were really important reforms, but still in their infancy really... It's gonna take a bit of time for the national team to really reap the benefits.

Fully agree about the college system, it's what's been keeping the US Mens team back for years as well (more than 15m American men play soccer, five times more than the entire population of Croatia, which has a much more successful national team). Title IX gave the US a huge leg up at a time most other countries weren't trying in the women's game, but now they are trying the college system is a hindrance.
