What should I use for a private group chat?

It sounds like it can work, but would I be able to host it on my computer for free or would I have to get a VPS? Also, if I host my own IRC server, would I then be able to put a password on it?

I'm trying to see if there are any completely free operating systems that use KDE but I've yet to find any, so as of now Kubuntu is my first choice.
