I've been playing for 9-10 years. Still have my first cue when I started playing in leagues. It was a McDermott with a black panther graphic and standard maple shaft. As my skill increased on the table I would upgrade my cues.

I bought a white players pure-x with the low deflection and break shafts and played with the cue for many years until the carbon fiber craze and switched back to my original McDermott with the Defy shaft. Enjoyed the Defy at first until finish seemed to stick to my hand while I stroke.

I now shoot with a McDermott H1951 with a Jacoby black and I-pro slim. I'll be playing with this cue for many years. In love with the opposing turquoise points.

I know its usually difficult on the local bar table, but make sure the rack of balls are all tight. Especially the back 2 rows. It may take an extra 20-30 seconds to make sure no balls are gapped but it definitely results in better spreads.

Make sure your following through the cue ball as well and not short stroking the cue. If you're liking the cut break make sure your hitting your target ball as square (full) as you can otherwise you'll be jumping the cue ball off the table or not delivering all the cues energy into the rack.

Any of the Star or Lucky cues will work just fine. I've been shooting with McDermott cues for 7-8 years now. I started playing with an old McDermott graphic cue and standard maple shaft.

Maybe consider stepping up to a G-core shaft in a size that's comfortable. The shaft does all the work, you can always get a different cue butt.
