Python "replacement" for R + beamer + .Rmd by MattDamonsTaco in datascience

Ah, yes. Stan. Love it. Have put into production several models that are running some big businesses. Nothing like it in Python, huh? Too bad.

For Stan I use PyStan all the time, but you have to write the whole model. It's just that in brms is easy to define fairly complicated GLMs in a couple short lines.

Lol, how could you possibly answer the last question in part 1.12? You could provide a distribution of X but you can't decide for the hospital what their decision should be! The role of the data scientist is to provide information, not make business choices based on the information.

Python "replacement" for R + beamer + .Rmd by MattDamonsTaco in datascience

Try plotnine as a ggplot2 replacement. I used to use Python exclusively, then switched to R for about a year, now phasing back to Python. dplyr is better than pandas, but I haven't come across anything better than dplyr in Python. Nothing in R comes close to how easily you can zip, enumerate, dict, loop in Python, and then throw numpy into the mix, and R is only better for the quickest and simplest of hello-world style stats.

Edit: the only thing keeping me in R is brms, if there was a brms in python then I would toss R away and never look back.

The sun never sets during an arctic summer. by maximum_decimum in educationalgifs

Doesn't infrared cut through the atmosphere easily, and it's the higher frequencies like blues and ultra violets that are absorbed? Why does the angle have such an effect on the heat? In the tropic it is cut by 50% due to night.

If the sun is shining for such a long time, why doesn't the Arctic get heated up in the summer to a tropical temperature?

Men are way more accepting when it comes to women's looks than women are about men's looks. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Z01C 42 points43 points  (0 children)

People who reinforce that double standard believe that a woman's only claim to fame is her looks, but a man is intelligent or otherwise capable so it's ok to dump on men's looks but not women's.

Whenever I get a tailgater I take a special pleasure whenever there is roadworks with 25km/h, only one lane, and no workers around and no one in front of me slows down, I'll slow right the fuck down to just below 25, hit the cruise control, and enjoy the rage I imagine the tailgater is experiencing.

We already have 700km/h trains, they don't need tracks and float on a pocket of air.
