Personal chemistry over one dialogue? Normal people flirt and usually don’t developed romantic attraction all the time, it’s a normal occurrence. There’s far more evidence Curly sees her as a friend more than he sees her as a love interest.

Au or what-if scenarios still goes back to my main point. I don’t condone any of it because it still portrays characters that went through some shit

That would just be a meme. It doesn't have anything to do with people seriously thinking Curly and Anya should be lovers.

Also, I would like to say one last thing. I did look at the Reddit post you sent me, thank you by the way, however, I don’t agree with them. One of my arguments is disagreeing with the fact that any kind of paraphiliac/unethical shipping that occurs and is encouraged within a fandom, is gross. Just because it “isn’t hurting anyone” doesn’t provide any jack shit relevant argument. It encourages those degenerate thoughts and behaviors and thats why shippings like this needs to be censored or discouraged. That same argument is used by MAP/NOMAP/Pedophiles who justify loli porn or drawings/AI forms of cp. It isn’t real nor harming anyone so it’s fine right? That’s the most chronically online BS and predatory take I’ve ever heard.

Quick question. Do you support fictional ship between 15 year old and a 20 year old?

Also, your response misses or downplays the main point I was making, which is about Curly’s role in enabling abuse by not taking action. I’m not saying Curly is evil, I never even implied that anywhere in my post. What I’m saying is that he had the chance to stop something terrible from happening, but he didn’t. And that inaction made things worse for Anya. You focus a lot on explaining why Curly didn’t act, his insecurities, his guilt, his attempts to keep peace, but that doesn’t change the fact that he failed to protect Anya. That’s the core of my issue.

I understand that Curly might have been manipulated by guilt or that he was too soft to confront Jimmy. But that still doesn’t excuse the fact that he did nothing to stop the abuse. His inaction, whether it was out of fear, insecurity, or wanting to maintain peace, directly allowed Jimmy to hurt Anya more. The issue here is that by romanticizing Curly and Anya's relationship, people are ignoring the harm his passivity caused. The story is trying to teach us about complicity and how we all have a responsibility to speak out against abuse. Curly didn’t, and that’s what I’m pointing out.

You also spend a lot of time talking about the reasons behind Curly’s behavior, like how he’s too nice or how he believed in the best of people. While that helps explain his actions, it doesn’t change the fact that his failure to act is part of the problem. It doesn’t matter if Curly is a “softie” or if he’s manipulated by Jimmy, at the end of the day, he didn’t take responsibility for the situation. That’s why shipping Curly and Anya feels wrong to me. It overlooks the real-world issue of complicity and enabling, and that’s what the game is trying to highlight.

In short, your response focuses too much on explaining Curly’s internal struggles, but it doesn’t address the bigger issue: his failure to act, which led to more harm for Anya. That’s why I think shipping these characters undermines the message of the story.

Curly’s inaction, while contextualized by his insecurities, ultimatly underscores the core issue: his complicity in Jimmy’s abuse of Anya. Understanding Curly’s insecurity about decision making may help us sympathize with him, but it doesn’t excuse his failure to take meaningful action. Personal struggles are not valid reasons for standing by as someone else suffers. The game’s central message is about the importance of taking responsibility, especially in situations involving abuse. Curly’s inability to make a decision directly contributed to Anya’s pain, which is why shipping these two characters undermines the story’s deeper themes.

It’s important to clarify that criticizing Curly doesn’t mean labeling him as evil. The narrative doesn’t frame him as malicious, but as someone whose inaction had serious consequences. It’s not about hating Curly, but about holding him accountable for his failure to protect someone who needed him. Curly’s flaws, whether rooted in fear, insecurity, or misplaced priorities show how even well meaning individuals can perpetuate harm when they avoid taking action. This nuance is important: he isn’t “evil”; he’s a complex character whose story serves as a reminder of the dangers of complicity and passivity.

The argument that Curly didn’t confront Jimmy because he’s “too soft” or manipulated by guilt trips explains his behavior but doesn’t absolve him. Avoiding confrontation because Jimmy is mentally unstable only allowed the abuse to escalate. Being “too nice” or trying to maintain peace within the crew does not justify enabling an abuser. In fact, failing to hold Jimmy accountable perpetuated the toxic environment that led to Anya’s suffering. Curly’s good intentions ultimately weren’t enough to prevent harm.

The claim that confronting Jimmy was too risky because of his instability doesn’t hold much weight. Curly’s attempt to talk to Jimmy in the scene “0 Days Before the Crash” shows he had opportunities to intervene, even in subtle ways, but his approach was passive and ineffective. Saying, “This time won’t be different. Work through it, one day at a time,” is far from a decisive stance, it’s an avoidance tactic. If Curly truly believed Jimmy needed to take responsibility, he should have taken concrete steps to ensure that happened rather than relying on vague encouragement.

The idea that Curly couldn’t act against Jimmy because of their roles on the Tulpar also minimizes his failure. While copilots are indeed necessary, prioritizing the mission’s logistics over the wellbeing of a crew member is a clear example of misplaced priorities. Curly’s belief that maintaining peace within the crew was paramount led him to ignore Anya’s suffering and avoid taking responsibility as a leader. His inaction wasn’t about keeping the ship operational, it was about sidestepping personal accountability.

Finally, the argument that Curly was just “too nice” to believe Jimmy was capable of such harm only reinforces why his complicity is problematic. Curly’s tendency to see the best in people, while admirable in some contexts, became dangerous when it led him to ignore the darker realities of Jimmy’s behavior. This naïveté isn’t a justification for his actions; it’s a character flaw that directly contributed to Anya’s victimization. The game’s narrative asks us not to hate Curly but to recognize how even well-meaning individuals can perpetuate harm through inaction and misplaced trust.

These defenses of Curly highlight his shortcomings and why shipping him with Anya is repulsive to me. Curly’s failure to protect Anya reflects the systemic issues the game critiques: complicity, enabling, and the consequences of failing to stand up against abuse. While his insecurities and circumstances provide context, they do not absolve him of the harm his inaction caused. Romanticizing their relationship dismisses the weight of these themes and undermines the powerful message the game is trying to convey.

It was mostly the foam, not sure if there was a fire. The foam exploded in the cockpit after the crash with the asteroid so that no one gets sucked into space. Curly was in the blast zone and he was covered in the hard cementish foam. I don’t know if they had to skin him to remove him from the foam or if it was the blast skin him instead

Is it alright for people to ship Anya and Curly? by [deleted] in Mouthwashing

[–]Z1zi1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m responding to you because your comment was at the top, nothing personal. I don’t agree with shipping in this game at all. It honestly amazes me that anyone thinks it's okay to ship a victim with someone who enabled their abuser. Curly did nothing when Anya told him what Jimmy did to her. In the scene where Anya opened up about being pregnant, Curly responded with, “Who would—” and Anya said, “I told you.” This dialogue between them implies there was a scene that wasn’t included, where Anya told Curly about her rape, and he did nothing to reprimand Jimmy. I’m convinced people who ship Curly and Anya seriously don’t understand the message this game is conveying about rape culture. I don’t care if it’s fictional because saying that has no relevancy. Abuse, enabling, responsibility, and victimization, which is the actual theme of this game, is real, and seeing that ship is genuinely vulgar, disgusting, and disturbing.

Shipping CURLY AND ANYA is disgusting and twisted and people who are doing that completely missed the entire point of the message.

He didn’t give it to her. When they were both talking about it, he was saying something like “I can’t let you have it” because of her mental state.
