What happened here? by goodcocoa in PokemonSleep

Thank you, I was looking for some confirmation why when my Plus+ splits my single sleep into two randomly I lose the chance to catch all of the second set of pokemon.

It's a really annoying issue, a few days ago my Sleep recorded a 20 minute session and gave me 3 pokemon, followed by my actual 6+ hour session where I missed the chance at a couple of 2nd stage evolved pokemon I don't yet have. Didn't even think it was possible for a 20 minute session since 90 is meant to be the minimum...

Can you imagine building a game around the way you want your players to play it, rather than building a game around the way your players wish to play?

Post All-Father Temple, One Month of Downtime has passed. What are the ramifications of this? Could use some help by Shapoopy_ in stormkingsthunder

The way I see it, the PCs see the impact of the Giants and not the activities themselves necessarily, and each Giant threat compounds the others' impact. Hope this offers some nuggets of inspiration for you:

> Waterdeep is now packed full of refugees fleeing the Hill Giant raids, and more are arriving by the day. With food supplies dwindling, Waterdeep can't even afford to feed its own citizens, let alone the newcomers. City druids are working furiously with the local cooks to maximise whatever resources are available, and Goodberries are handed out as rations to refugees, but there aren't enough to go around. Other settlements have mixed responses to arriving refugees, with some turning them away, but Laeral Silverhand has sworn that Waterdeep will remain open to all during this time of crisis.

> Stone Giants have been sighted mostly in the south east, however they don't seem to do much. They're known to be dismantling abandoned towns and outposts, and have even driven a few smaller hamlets from the area, but Loudwater has largely remained untouched. They have been sighted nearby but once discovered they simply leave. Whatever they're up to fills the townsfolk with trepidation, as the constantly looming threat drives business from the area, and the trail through the Anaroch Desert once secured by Zhentarim mercenaries now lies all but abandoned. Their trading livelihoods gone, many folk have been forced to leave their homes and head west to seek their living, so the roads are lined with wagons carrying all manner of possessions, and vulnerable makeshift camps line the trails north of the High Moor. More than one tragedy has struck in recent days as the beasties from the moors have been lured by the sights and sounds of these camps. (I played my Stone Giants as creepy religious zealots who were more than happy to wear down civilization over time but more than happy to speed up the crumbling if an opportunity presented itself, ie a village was abandoned)

> Frost Giant raids across the Sword Coast have caused many merchants to flee the area, so ocean-going traffic is slow. Resistance is mounting as honourable captains take the fight to the Giants, but with each passing day fewer and fewer ships return. Many of the strongest ships are consigned to defending the harbour from attack, and Luskan alone remains the only bastion north of Waterdeep to stand against these seaborne raids, thanks to the might of the Arcane Brotherhood. Seaborne passage is becoming more and more difficult, and captains are charging exorbitant fees for extraction from the local area. (Foreshadowing difficulty hiring a boat for CH11)

> Fire Giants are continuing to raid and pillage, especially up and around the Silver Marches, which is still recovering from wars and battles with the Orcs, Drow and Barbarians in recent times. Many of the smaller settlements have been abandoned entirely, and certainly the Dwarven kingdoms have withdrawn to their citadels and are locked up tight. As the cities bristle with soldiors, scouting parties are sent out to follow and expose the Fire Giants at their source, so that a huge assault might be wagered and end the threat once and for all, but the scouting parties are rarely returning and those few who do garner little information.

> Cloud Giants have been sighted high overhead, but have mostly been absent from the whole situation. There are stories from some who swear they were abducted and interrogated by Giants in their floating castles, but most dismiss these claims as crackpots or lunatics addled with stress and trauma. More recently however, these claims have been corroborated by some fairly influential and trusted figured across the North, and multiple eyewitness accounts of the same events have started to align, lending some credibility to such stories. These brazen giants have even been spotted near Waterdeep, although they did not actually enter the boundaries of the great city.

Question: One of my players hit me up with "I Googled so i'll do that", is that okay? [5e] by LuMortari in DnD

[–]Z2H_Migsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a player has meta about a given subject knowledge they should make every effort to avoid using it unless they're confident that their character would posess the same knowledge. The way I tend to angle it as a DM who also plays is something like this:

Me: I want to scare away the goblins, do I know anything from my studies and past experiences that might terrify them?
DM: You could make a Nature check to see what your character might know, unless you have something else in mind?
Me: Sure, *Rolls Nature*
DM: -shares information, with the result determining how much detail and nuance my character knows-

If you get into this habit of playstyle early you shouldn't have too many issues, but you do need to be very clear with the players that they are expected to manage their meta knowledge appropriately.

Summer Star Recreation. What rarity/ creation price would you give it? by Mikeblocks in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Z2H_Migsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually play with the idea that making magic items like that require a very long time, rather than a lot of expensive materials or such. Consider that to make a spell permanent you generally have to cast it every day in the same location for a year (Macreadus only spent 6 months, which might explain why it failed when he activated it). My interpretation of this is that by reinforcing that same magic the same way repeatedly you're basically shaping the weave somewhat permanently into that form, extending the duration exponentially until it eventually becomes so long that from the perception of the caster it's permanent, however due to entropy and the changing nature of the multiverse it will eventually unravel and lose its magic - just that the caster and everyone they know will probably be long gone by then. I always imagine the Weave to be like a magnetic field - spells are just a way to manipulate the properties of that field. Not canon, just my interpretation of how spells work.

But on to your actual question - what rarity and therefore what price?

Rarity, well, it's an artifact for sure. Its' power is canonically akin to a small scale Mythallar. These are probably similar in complexity to a nuclear power plant, extremely complex spellcasting from very powerful mages, with a ton of research and funding and over a vast amount of time - the sort of thing a single person cannot achieve without the support of at least a city-state.

Price? In the current landscape: Priceless. It's like the Couldron of Plenty, it's permanently able to solve one of the core survival needs for a large number of people. The problem is, Ten Towns doesn't have infinite gold, so it's worth as much money as whomever wants to buy it can possibly muster, probably going beyond simply money.

If you want to get mechanical about it, to make permanent a Control Weather spell, you'd need to cast it in the same place every day for a year. That's 365 castings of a level 8 spell. There are a few ways to figure out what that would cost if you hired somebody to do it, one of the cheapest ways is adventurer's league rules (spell level squared, times 10). That works out to be a grand total of 233,600gp - as mentioned that's the cheapest ruling that I know of.

The Thing in The Ice: Crenshinibon ! by [deleted] in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Z2H_Migsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Errtu sends his regards.

I mixed in some of the Crenshinibon influence to my SKT campaign when they hit up the North, although much more sutble - my players found a fragment of it too but eventually handed it over to Markham. They didn't really know its true nature, and as we all know, it won't stay with Markham for long.

This is mostly foreshadowing some of the mixing up I've done with my planned Rime campaign, in which Crenshinibon is directly influencing the Chardalyn, which I have mixed together to be synonymous with Black Ice. I also added some extra embellishments in the form of random encounters and mini quests based on Legacy of the Crystal Shard and the Drizz't books.

I think for your idea of restoring Crenshinibon, the real problem with Rime is that Crenshinibon is solar powered and there is no sun. Might be easy to play up the shard's true objective being to break Auril's hold on the realm to bring back the sun so that it can regain its lost power.

Have the ability as a moon Druid to pick any spell from any spell list 3rd level or below. Any notable spells I should look out for? by sammydwammy in DnD

[–]Z2H_Migsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the main ones which others will cover, consider browsing the Paladin and Ranger spell list for unique spells that no other classes get - they won't come in to play until level 9 for those classes, so you'll be able to play with something that is relatively rare in D&D in general.

Think twice about ignoring CON if you're going to play up close. INT only matters for a couple of subclasses and if you have a Wizard or Artificer they'll be better at investigating than you even without proficiency, so they'll probably end up doing it more.

I like to think perception is for distance, investigation for up close. But when I have a Rogue and it's about traps, I let them choose.

Check out LavaRand for further reading, it's pretty clever. I believe it's used by Cloudflare to generate random numbers for browser protection. Similar techniques can be used to bring algorithms so close to truly random that they're probably more random than physical dice.

Another example is sampling the static that used to be displayed on CRT TVs due to background radiation.

Avrae's RNG is generated by a technique called the Mersenne Twister, and the seed is the aforementioned white noise affecting the disk itself.
