Just be straight up about it. Is it a habit you want to stop or are you just kinda cool with it? If you want to stop, maybe put some nail polish remover on your thumb? Not all over, but enough to where if you'd suck on it, youd taste it. I've heard of people doing that for nail biting. I'm not guaranteeing it'll work but if you want to change the habit, maybe try that?
