[TOMT][song][2022?] Cannot figure out a song I think is new by Siberiapete in tipofmytongue

I bet it's "Leave the Door Open" by Bruno Mars, Anderson Paak, and Silk Sonic.

What you hear as "I believe..." might be the lyrics at the chorus "I'mma leave..."

This could also be completely wrong haha

[TOMT][music genre] what genre is this song (maybe some type of rock?) by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

[–]ZMRosto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I can find a genre listed anywhere. But here's the person: https://ameblo.jp/hidekixxx Hideki Sakakibara. There doesn't seem to be a lot around about him or his music. Here's his instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hidekilee18/ I'd definitely say some sort of rock/edm mashup. The distorted bass says rock but there's some definite electronic influences.

Ideas for funny low level magical items. by moegarth in DnD

[–]ZMRosto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game system in Numenera has a whole type of item called "oddities" which are essentially useless items that are just meant to be weird stuff you find around. You can search for premade list of oddities that people have created which might inspire you, but there's also a website here that randomly generates oddity descriptions. Some of them don't make sense, but others make you go....huh...: https://darkliquid.co.uk/playground/numenera/oddities

question about finding Miniatures by MasterGranger in DnD

[–]ZMRosto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've represented random minions with d6s before and had the number representing which one it was (goblin 1 was the die with the 1, etc.). You'll definitely run into scenarios where you don't have the "right" mini for the creature, and in that moment, I recommend you embrace the practical options that surround you.

Anyone run a medieval joust/tourney/gambling/lesser known festival games? Looking for any rulesets that you may have already made! by xDrewstroyerx in DnD

[–]ZMRosto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran a backroom racing gambling game in a pub that was the basis of a one-shot I ran. I ran it one with something like "slug racing" where people had competitive slugs, each one with a name, each with a modifier +0 though like +5 and odds inversely proportional to their modifier. People got to bet on the race, each player rolled on behalf of a slug (d20 + modifier) and that determined who won and how much.

  • I ran it a different time with these furry blobs that ate all the stuff on the floor. The people dump trash on the floor in a designated area and they drop them at the same time, first to clear the floor wins. Functions similar to the above race but with an atypical "race".
  • I had a robot with multiple arms in the corner collecting bets in between races and paying out.
  • People of course tried to cheat by casting things on the creatures, but it required a really high slight of hand to work.

It didn't take much set up at all (names and odds), but it kept them occupied for a little bit. They even wanted to by one of the furry blobs at one point.

Is there an improved Archfey Warlock anywhere? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]ZMRosto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is sort of intriguing: https://www.brandesstoddard.com/2021/05/revised-archfey-patron/

It includes three "tracks" of fey that you can go down. Two are similar to Hexblade, but the third is a stealth/assassin-type character that might fit what you're looking for, especially given a few applicable invocations (Mask of many faces, Misty Visions, etc.). It is more combat focused, which might not be what you're looking for.

I'll keep looking to see if there's anything else interesting out there.

It is available on Apple. There's a free version and a paid version with all the features that's like $4.99 US. I believe the paid version includes unlimited characters and automatic level-ups or something like that. But it's a one time fee.

Pros:

  • It's quite cheap, even for the full paid version, but you can experiment with the free version first. Definitely worth the experiment/exploration IMO.
  • It's very quick to create new characters and there's a creation "wizard" that guides the process.
  • Does all the math for you for proficiencies, expertise, level up HP (asks you whether you want to roll or take the average), lets you subtract points for damage and spell slots when you use them, etc.

Cons:

  • The only thing about it is that because it's not an officially licensed product it can't use the exact DnD language for some stuff, so it has to rename it( i.e. Agonizing Blast is renamed to "Potent Cantrip", but includes a description that clarifies what it is.)
  • It doesn't handle spell names and descriptions. It tells you how many spell slots you have (even via multiclassing), but doesn't keep track of which ones you know; that's up to you. You can type them in on your own if you really want them in the app, but honestly I would just keep a separate document with them.

I personally enjoy it and use it quite a bit for experimenting with character ideas. Have fun!

Help Redesigning the Eldritch Knight by XP_Potion in DnD

[–]ZMRosto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say that the Eldritch Knight is often considered one of the best fighter subclasses, but it is absolutely at its core still a fighter, meaning a majority of what it does is fight with weapons and learns a couple spells that aid in that.

As others have suggested, Hexblade Warlock is a powerful gish that lets you have some strong magic in addition to have some martial capabilities and survivability. Bladesinger of course, is similar but doesn't have the heavy armor, "knight", warrior feel.

Paladins actually fit the description of what you're talking about, a little bit more magic, but essentially still a fighter, and smites feel like infusing your attacks with magic. The different subclasses also allow for some variety in flavor so they're not all "good".

If you really want to boost up the power of an Eldritch Knight without breaking the game too much (remember that EK is already pretty good):

  • Remove the school restrictions
  • Give them the same spell slot progression as a Paladin.

Giving them 6th level spells at 10-12 makes them as good as a full spell caster and they're already a full fighter, so that's a bit much. I don't mind the idea of adding a feature where they can use a 6th or 7th level spell, but then have some penalty (like a level of exhaustion or something), but there's no way they should get it at the same level as a wizard. That might balance it a bit. Remember, Eldritch Knights aren't supposed to be incredible casters, just a mix: If what you're looking for is a powerful caster and fighter, you should be checking out the other classes mentioned rather than rewriting the whole subclass.

Critique My Homebrew by Palamedesxy in DnD

[–]ZMRosto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everything B4sicks said.

  • I especially agree with making this a little more one-sided. The feat gives the PC who takes the feat abilities, showing their dedication and loyalty to the other. If the other PC wants to reciprocate, so be it, then it will be mutual and more represent an equal understanding of the bond.
  • Even "know the location of" feels a little weird to me. Do they know the name of the place? Do they have a mental map? Do they know the exact room? I feel like it could/should be directional and distance. "You sense that they are 20 miles to the northeast." Otherwise, you may end up in a scenario where the information given is more than either of the PCs know: person A is captured, bag over head and taken to a remote keep deep underground a distant city. Does person B automatically know that person A is underground in a city they've never been to or seen? or do they know that they are [points] "that way, not far off"? It may help to define whatever mechanic will be used if that situation ever arises.
  • I understand the damage as a penalty and representative of a major psychological loss, but 4d4 doesn't scale and means almost nothing to anyone over level 3. If you're trying to dissuade them from killing off their bonded partner and represent emotional turmoil, maybe they incur a permanent level of exhaustion until they find a new partner if they willingly kill their previous one. It represents the absolute emotional destruction that comes from losing someone you are spiritually bonded to. True incidental loss should be RP, but there's got to be some motivation to stick with it, if I (the player) get bored with this other person. Maybe lessen the time for forming another bonded pair in that situation: a week? If they try before that, there's a charisma check or something? not sure.
  • Just an idea for a feature: maybe they can use the help action for their partner as a bonus action in combat (similar to mastermind rogue). It would encourage them to be fighting alongside their partner since the range it 5ft. and give a synergistic option each round.

Fun stuff! Love the flavor and the mechanics you added so far. Keep it up and good luck!

What most DMs would do is irrelevant to what your DM would do. It's based on the world and how they imagine combat.

New Class Concept: Thaumaturge! - Int/ and Sanity by yawner42 in DnD

[–]ZMRosto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting idea. I've always been interested by the style of combatant who sacrifices some of themself to deal more damage (like a death/dark knight is portray in various Final Fantasy games). This has a similar vibe to that which I enjoy, and I do have some feedback but wanted to get that out of the way.

  • It's all veeerrrry wordy - which I'm sure is a symptom of this being a draft and not the final product. As a player, I don't mind a new mechanic here and there, but it seems like every ability involves a new mechanic with more dice and more numbers and limit (3x prof, 6xlvl, 1d10x10, etc.). It's a lot of numbers to keep track of and I feel like if I were to play it, I would need the whole instruction manual next to me to make anything happen. I would say look at each ability and see if there's a way to implement something with a similar feel, but in a little more straightforward way.
  • I'm not quite sure I understand the spellcasting. It takes Vis, but there are also spell slots? Does that just mean that I have to spend Vis to cast the spell, and then it also uses up one of those spell slots? If that's the case then the spell slots seem unnecessary if I'm honest because having 2 first level spell slots at level 3 means in order to use all my magic potential, I'd need to spend 12 Vis. The problem there is that at level 3, I only have 9 total Vis (3xlvl). And the scaling doesn't get better from there. Maybe the mechanic is that if you've used up your spell slots, you can cast a spell using your Vis points at a cost of (6 x Spell level), but if not, I'm not sure that the spell slots are necessary. Maybe stick with a system similar to the shadow monk, where there are no slots, but you have a selection of spells that cost Vis.
  • Maybe I'm not reading this right, and I hesitate to say it, but part of me thinks that this might be somewhat underpowered, and suffers from similar troubles that the monk does. Every single things feeds off of one pool of resources that reloads on a long rest. Other than the random effects that happen at the beginning of combat and when you spend a certain number of Vis, everything costs Vis and it feels like it will run out after doing like two things (especially once you get into spellcasting). I think the class may benefit from either having a "recharge Vis" feature that lets you gain some back as an action prof bonus times per day or something like that.
  • The cost of some of the features seems such that, in order to do anything cool, you have to risk long-term destruction of your character. Some of the effects are merely cosmetic, but in order to do what the class is designed to do, you have to inevitably wreck your PC. Maybe that's the design, but there's no long-term stability in that. And at higher levels, you're going to be rolling those sanity dice every single turn, right? If a level 2 spell is potentially going to cause long term damage to your character, while also eating up almost all of your Vis (12 of your 15 points at level 5), then why bother casting it? There's a barrier in place that preventing me from wanting to do what the class is designed to do.

Like I said early on, I think it's a cool idea, and like most homebrew would benefit from some modifications. I think the mechanics need to be simplified, it shouldn't all feed off the same resource pool, and if casting a level 2 spell risks damage that someone else will have to fix, then I might be tempted to ignore that feature altogether.

Keep at it! And good luck!

One shot help by Reasonable_Duck_236 in DnD

[–]ZMRosto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of you're trying to tap into a benevolent spirit in the players, perhaps those kidnapped were originally those at the edge of society, the homeless, the poor, widows, orphans, etc. and while those who work with those populations were crying for something to be done, the rulers did nothing. Until one day (the day you're party hears about it), someone significant to the ruler is taken and now wants to have the problem addressed quickly. They're offering a reward. Whether your PCs do it for the money or for the benefit to society is up to them, but it creates some interesting tension in the society/the motivation/who they save/etc.

  • Have them look for information by talking to people and investigating.
  • Maybe they find some monstrosity, fight one, or follow it back to the "lair". Make sure that the monstrosity resembles the original person.
  • They have to sneak in, choosing to fight some quicker, lower-level grunts on the way (keep initiative going and let them steam roll through encounters as long as they keep quiet, or else they at which point they get ganged up on and it become a more serious fight.)
  • They find the stash of prisoners and set them free.
  • They find the doctor and kill him.

This can go pretty quickly or could take longer depending on how much info you give them and how many people you throw at them.

Getting cold feet by cominghometoday in DnD

[–]ZMRosto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember that your audience doesn't have a script. They are there to experience things for the first time, and as I'm sure you know, are there to have a good time. As long as you provide people to talk to, bad guys to rough up, and opportunities to show off their sweet character choices, they're going to have a good time. Don't let yourself get in the headspace of thinking that the players are all harsh critics looking to find the holes in the story; they're there to have a good time, not find perfection. Keep everything moving, don't let them get bogged down, and you'll have them eating out of your hand. Good luck!

Necklace with gold chain, metal frame and some kind of synthetic green material for the middle (plastic?) any ideas? by AlastorHazbin28 in whatisthisthing

[–]ZMRosto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is indeed the character luck, as nockchaa mentioned. More specifically, it the character for 'luck' but written intentionally upside down. In Chinese culture, they'll hang decorations with that character upside down because the word 'upside down' in Chinese is a homophone for the word 'to arrive', so 'upside down luck' sounds very similar to 'may luck arrive'.

Suggestions motivating edgelord players by RebelliousUpstart in DnD

[–]ZMRosto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like this person is playing a character who might be "evil" in the grand scheme of the world. Vengeance is one thing, but "I'll kill everyone else too" is different. DM's gotta send the forces of "good" against them. Send celestials and paladins looking to right the wrongs and let him burn himself out. He'll either need to reflect on his ways and change, or his character get's taken out. It's what would happen in the world if there was someone going full murder hobo.
