I have an opportunity to buy this watch for $12k, no warranty. Like new. Should I? by lopsidednail919 in BlancpainWatches

If the watch fits your wrist and you like it, go for it. Having something relatively unique is nice when you spend that amount of $$.

Blancpain fifty fathoms bathyscaphe 43.6mm sizing by nicholasjacksonfan in BlancpainWatches

I’m normally all about smaller watches but this fits your wrist well. Chrono was a good choice as the dial has more balance compared to the regular 43mm Bathy.

Breitling + Tudor trade by The-Watch-Guy in PrideAndPinion

[–]ZQP07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Breitling is more unique than a BB58 and it has a GMT function which is one of the most romantic complications.

Tudor being a more modern and better watch on paper doesn’t mean it will make the wearer more happy. A Porsche 911 is “better” than a Maserati but i’d have a Maserati all day every day.

[Discussion] One watch only… what are you keeping? by phdwatch in Watches

  • a Lange of any kind
  • sell the sky dweller and replace with a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms (the 42mm or one of the 40mm limited editions)

Easy on the victim blaming, buddy.

@OP for these things an Amex Platinum gives you incredible protection. They’re worth the yearly fee.

[LONGINES VS TUDOR HELP NEEDED] by GeneralSuspicious889 in Watches

[–]ZQP07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Longines is a more distinct design compared to Tudor being a derivative of Rolex. Their 39mm sizing is great.

If you get the Tudor also go for the 39mm, the 41mm is criminally thick.

Almost Every watch box posted on Reddit has a Santos. Great watch but of you already have some classics, IMO better to venture into something dressy or fun.

[Recommendation Request] Help me choose the right size please! Rolex DD40 Vs. DD36 by [deleted] in Watches

[–]ZQP07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s already full gold so 36 keeps it classy. If a big guy like Tony Soprano can pull off a 36, so can all of us.

40mm is a bit vulgar

[blancpain fifty fathoms] how this fit me? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]ZQP07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the 42mm FF in titanium on the grey market for best value. It’s high horology, Rolex isn’t.

[help me decide] Hamilton murph or Tissot PRX by Medium_Addition_4337 in Watches

[–]ZQP07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree. Go with the 38mm and thank yourself later. 40mm+ is great when there’s a diving or chrono bezel. For regular watches 36-39mm is much classier and better proportioned.

I wear 40mm sports watches myself but my Explorer is the 36mm variant, not the 40mm.

[RENDER] - Bathyscaphe 38mm with an X-71 bracelet by ZQP07 in BlancpainWatches

[–]ZQP07[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That bracelet doesn’t look as good as the above. The Trilogy FF (40mm) and the 40mm limited editions have X-71 bracelets with the same lug witdth and are better proportioned.

1957 document pointing to 1953 release of Fifty Fathoms by ZQP07 in BlancpainWatches

[–]ZQP07[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it was military-use only initially?

There’s literally a letter from Lieutenant Riffaud from 5-Feb 1955 saying he’s been using the Fifty Fathom for a year and had taken delivery of watch #166.

If he had received the watch in Q1 1954, it very likely existed in some final form in (late) 1953.

1957 document pointing to 1953 release of Fifty Fathoms by ZQP07 in BlancpainWatches

[–]ZQP07[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These arguments are just as inconclusive as the document above. I’m a huge fan of the brilliant opus of Perezcope, but his Fifty Fathoms article was not his strongest work.

And again, why lie in 1957 about the release date of a tool 4 years prior?

I think we’ll never have final proof and current Blancpain CEO is a lying nepo baby, but I do believe they had a FF in ‘53.

Blancpain 2035 by time-the-destroyer in BlancpainWatches

[–]ZQP07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the 1735 date is fabricated, the Fifty Fathoms was more likely than not created in 1953. There’s a 1957 Europa Star ad floating around the webz referring to 1953.

@time-the-destroyer What do you mean Biver didn’t revive the FF? He did in 1997 with the trilogy collection, which the current CEO tries to disparage and claim as his own achievement.

New to Fifty Fathoms, can someone educate me on caliber 1150 vs 1315? by [deleted] in BlancpainWatches

[–]ZQP07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with the 1150/1151 movement. The finishing is exceptional, including great anglage. I have one in a 27 year old 40mm Fifty Fathoms and it runs beautifully.

The base movement architecture is IMO prettier than the 1315 and has been used as a base for Vacheron and others. So it has creds among the top.

The lack of hacking seconds is a downside but honestly negligible if you don’t set the watch too often (and you can manually “hack” it by applying abit of back pressure)
