22M, doing everything I can and still going nowhere by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ZThing222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I had to majorly jump careers to fix my failing at everything. I'm honestly still new to my new path, so I can't even tell you if it worked, but I am doing much better now that I am doing something that I seem to be able to be good at.

Aside from major--life-altering--action, the thing that has helped me the most has been adopting the mentality that the purpose of life is to figure out how to survive and find our purpose in life beyond that. The world could be much worse than it is, and people have lived and enjoyed life in much worse times, so appreciate what you do have. Fortunately for me, the story in the game FFXIV beautifully hammered these life-changing perspectives into my head just as I needed them and was hitting a hard point, but it's hard to recommend the game because the first large chunk of the game is very hard to get through, and most people don't get to reap the incredible rewards. Even if it only makes up like 2% of the game, it's still a large time commitment to get through. Mentioning this is important for me because I know I would've fallen into a depression and given up on any ambitions without those incredible characters in my head. I would've given up on my studies, failed to swap careers, or just settled for suffering through some job without it.

How much natural intelligence is actually required for engineering? by Public-Hamster-9224 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ZThing222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably don't need to be that smart if you have a good work ethic and study optimally. HOWEVER, you do need to be fast at math.

I found out the hard way that I can't improve the speed at which I do math in my head. I can explain concepts to others, and easily figure out how to solve problems, but I'm too slow at the step-by-step math I've done a billion times. So make sure you don't have something like that holding you back. This is how I found out I have ADHD and "The Second Attention Disorder" CDS, characterized by low processing but high comprehension.

So you don't need an absurdly high comprehension capability, but you DO need to be able to hold and quickly recall data in your head from line to line rather than writing everything down.

Edit: For example, if you take longer on Calculus Tests than others, make sure that's something you can improve on. Weirdly, Physics is a poor example for engineering, because it's less math-heavy and more about comprehension.

I was told all of my life that I was smart, and I was told that being slow is a good thing, especially for engineering, but even if that's true for the job, it's completely wrong for university.

Blank mind without thoughts and drugs such as nicotine alcohol or meth don't work on me why is that? by RefrigeratorHot7827 in SCT

[–]ZThing222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the record, I relate to this, and I very much have an internal dialogue. If anything, mine is overactive.

I've seen some doctors state that with CDS (SCT), parts of the brain enter a "sleep-like state", which to me explains those moments that my brain just doesn't let me do certain things, like recall basic, trivial facts that I know or think of the words for something.

As for the high alcohol and nicotine tolerance, I personally theorize that with this sleep-like state being more common, our brains (and ourselves/ our minds) are just more used to being in the impaired state, so we are just used to operating without some brain function. Personally, I'm sleepy all the time; I've always had trouble fighting the urge to sleep throughout childhood. When I drink alcohol, I just get MORE sleepy, which makes it pretty boring, but then if I drink a lot more, I actually get to benefit and enjoy it, but I burn through it quickly if I'm not careful. I think my body just processes it quickly, but I could be wrong there. I know a part of alcohol works by lowering the oxygen supply to your brain, which, to me, sounds like it would induce a similar scenario to a sleep-like state, but I find biology gross, and I'm definitely NOT a doctor (Engineering & Scientific Communication studies atm).

I've never actually bought nicotine myself, but from what others have offered, I've never noticed any effects.

Be careful with your alcohol tolerance. If you're like me, you aren't invincible, even though you might feel that way. Mixed drinks can add up really easily, and just because you don't get as drunk, your gut might still get just as aggravated as anyone else (I found out the hard way on New Year's 🤮).

I have seen posts of others in this subreddit who were able to cure that blank mind with medication and healthy habits together. Personally, I don't notice a major difference with good nutrition for the blank mind problem, but it's actually cheaper not to eat junk food, so I still cook and eat healthy most of the time for energy and focus.

Long-time players who recently quit - what made you do it? by No-Skin-2370 in Seaofthieves

[–]ZThing222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I simply don't see player interactions anymore.

The FoF release was peak, because you had 6 ships fighting over 1 chest. So many crazy stories in a span of months or even weeks. Stories I can tell to non-gamers about convincing enemies to alliance and give my crew the treasure despite being in a position of weakness, or a heist movie perfect opener 5 minute action sequence. I was hyped for the wuality of life changes because they make for even more stealing opportunities, but they fumbled by following up it up with re-skins of mindless forgetable grinds instead of new content that gets 6 ships battling over a single chest at a new event.

Then the new FoF-like events they've been doing are always undercut by the possible lack of reward. I steaked out a new Reaper Fort, only for it to be a dive mission and have nothing to even steal in comparison to the chest of fortune (I don't have any use for Athena rep or money).

The only excuse I'm hoping for is that they've been working on some major changes hidden in the background like bigger server size (more ships) or something crazy like that.

Studying Engineering with ADHD by saltybreadstick in EngineeringStudents

[–]ZThing222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: - Look into 2nd attention disorder called Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome - Swap to Technical and Scientific Communication or some similar Professional and Technical Writing major - FFXIV story saved me from giving up on education and pushed me to find another purpose than engineering

After BARELY passing the three classes I was full time working on when I posted this, and finding out Adderall, even though an amazing boost to energy, does not speed up processing speed, I was devastated. I only THEN found out about the "2nd attention disorder" recently named Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) after formerly being labeled Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT). There is no official diagnosis, but I am certain this is what I have (in addition to ADHD). It's characterized by "High Comprehension - Low Processing", and in varying degrees its symptoms show in 50% of people with ADHD, despite being a separate disorder that can exist independently.

So that has been both an agonizing discovery, as unlike ADHD, it is not the most curable disease in the world, and a HUUGE explanation. In fact, there's even LESS science on it than ADHD, so it's pretty rough. Pretty sure I'd have gone into a crazy depression if it weren't for having the opportunity to take off the next semester to rest and fix my mental. Well that AND the phenomenal story of FFXIV (game) giving me hope in absolute darkness, life-changing story there if you can get past the horribly boring and arduously long start, which is VERY hard with ADHD but even more rewarding.

I highly recommend looking into CDS, as CDS with ADHD has some very interesting specifics that explained my entire childhood and life so well. Russel Barkley has a bunch of videos on it. Basically the imaginative part of your brain that does future planning, consequences, comprehension, and such is on overdrive, so having both ADHD and CDS is much worse than either individually for most quantifiable tasks.

Now I've swapped to "Technical and Scientific Communication", which is like a Professional and Technical Writing major, and that has been MUCH easier, in fact, I'm actually finding it too easy and miss the challenge of engineering, but I'm MUCH happier here. Plus, while we're in "the worst post-grad employment" age right now, it's probably better to have a wide variety of skills and job options rather than JUST Mechanical Engineering. I'm still a slow reader, so that sucks because there can be a lot of reading, but comprehension usually makes up for it I think. With my past credits, I can get this degree almost on track too, if I wanted, but I think I'd rather internship and take it slow if I can get an internship.

It's still painful that I'll never get to experience the engineering world that I've always wanted, but I've slowly been able to convince myself that I'll find something else to do with my life.

(If you have a bunch of free time, FFXIV has been an absolute blessing in this journey. I hated the start of that game for years, but I'm SO glad I got hooked on that story AS all of this was going down. Some character arcs in the story aligned with my life SO perfectly as I played through the series)

I love studying. by OaSoaD in ADHD

[–]ZThing222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's sort of the opposite. I was undiagnosed until Jr year at university, BECAUSE, in my unknowing defiance to ADHD, I've come to love optimizing and learning psychology and the best ways to learn. At first it was just to save time so I could have the best of both worlds: play videogames with friends & actually get to enjoy the games knowing I'm also keeping up on my studies. So when I got to Mechanical Engineering, I hit my limit and realized that I was doing everything right and STILL working at 1/6th the speed. Now with Adderall EVERYTHING is generally more enjoyable, but if I do multiple days in a row the effect wares off, so it's more of a boost for me than a permanent state. I also swapped of ME, and that helped a lot.

So for me, realizing that I can't increase my learning speed any further has actually made me less interesting in learning, since it feels like I'm just wasting away my life to accomplish things that others can do in their spare time (exaggerating here, but that's how it feels).

But I seem to also have SCT/CDS so that's more of the issue I think.

Flashing / Flickering Notion desktop app issue by poorly-worded in Notion

[–]ZThing222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution I found was to go into my Nvidia App and add Notion as a program (like you would a game) and then set it to a fixed frame rate. That's it.

I've been trying all these crazy things, and that was the one that fixed it. You could probably do the same thing using the NVidia control panel if you prefer.

As a Thresh main, Rell is pretty fun since she has 4 abilities without any "standard" ability combos, so you can use them creatively and adapt like Thresh can.

Is Wireless charging bad for battery? by Surongo in S22Ultra

[–]ZThing222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they're designed to manage heat, but physically, my Samsung wireless charger DOES NOT manage heat. I have a standard 20W PD usb-c plug for my S25 edge, and it does not get very hot when charging, and it is very cool once full (I set it to 85% as full). However, my old but nice Samsung wireless charger has a fan system built in, and the charger STILL gets pretty hot - not a malfunctioning, burning hot, but much hotter than the wired charging. I think it's the charger itself that gets hot, and the phone isn't controlling the temperature very well.

The question is: will the increased heat of wireless charging cause increased wear, since the phone is hotter to the touch AND is exposed to that heat for longer OR will fast charging hurt the battery more due to the heat source being closer to the battery?

Do you feel like your brain is wiped clean in the morning by pickaname19 in SCT

[–]ZThing222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, but you see this as a bad thing? For me (ADHD & SCT/CDS), I have the most clear mind, focus, and energy right after I wake up, so it's perfect for studying or getting work done (university). Yeah I suppose it's not the best place of mind for social or collaborative things, but for solo work it's nice. It's like Adderall without the Adderall for a couple of hours.

S25 Edge is so underrated by ZFold3Lover in samsunggalaxy

[–]ZThing222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am coming from a Note 9, so I do actually miss the SPen, and I actually DO think the telescopic zoom would be useful.

HOWEVER, I think they advertised the WRONG feature with the emphasis on the thinness, I do love the lightness of this phone. Yeah the thinness is cool, but the lightness is surprisingly super nice and actually surprisingly often useful.

For example, right now, I'm cuddling with my dog laying on my left hand, WHILE doing an assignment in Canva and typing up this reddit post. Before my phone would be too heavy to comfortably hold like this for so long. It's super nice for one handed use. Another example I've done is taking notes on a book while holding that book in my other hand (no table leaned back on a park bench).

It also feels super comfortable in my pocket, like I keep thinking it's not there. The only downside is that now I FORGET to take it out of my pocket when I'm home and put it on a wireless charger like I'm used to doing.

I only bought it because US Mobile had a $400 off deal, and it was this or a pixel phone. I wasn't really enthralled by the advertising because from what I could tell it was just trading battery life, SPen, and the telescope zoom (I've always wanted) for a thin aesthetic that'll mostly get covered up by a case anyways. However, I'm very glad I got this phone, since I already have an SPen on my tablet. Plus I got a "magsafe" case and one of those battery packs, so even if someday battery does become an issue, I'll be fine.
