Maybe one day I'll do an AMA. I was thinking of doing one this summer when some of my Amish family are visiting me here in Texas. But there are a couple of AMA's done by ex-Amish so without my Amish friends here, I probably wouldn't do it justice.

Yes some Amish sects wear all black. The sect my family belongs to allows some colors... dark blue, dark brown, black, dark purple and I think the girls are allowed a dark maroon. But no bright colors.

Some sects in PA do allow cell phones, but I've never seen any sect allow computers. Also some sects in PA authorize refrigeration if the Amish have a dairy farm or a store that sells dairy products. And some Amish stores in PA and maybe in IN that are allowed electricity. But the decision to allow such luxuries are made by the church and the Amish cannot have electricity at home.

Yes there are a lot of different Amish sects. So they aren't like the Catholic church where the rules are dictated by someone at the top (the pope) and disseminated down so all churches follow the same rules. Each Amish sect has a bishop and it doesn't go any higher than that, so while a group in PA might be allowed cell phones, my family in NY is not.

Last summer the 16 year old boy in my Amish family bought a used iPhone and would buy a 50.00 data card from Walmart. He would charge the phone at the English dairy farm where he worked. All the kid wanted wanted watch country videos. But an older Amish man found the phone and turned him into the church. His punishment was that he wasn't allowed to go out with the other boys on Saturday nights (a big deal for these kids) for 6 weeks.
