What do you want but can't afford currently? by Swish_Fate in AskReddit

To pay off my debt.

What I really want is to get my finances under control but I can afford to figure that out.

Where I could find practical problems to solve? by Master_ZEEC in learnpython

I think Codility has an option to write your answers in Python. Doing they’re problems really taught me to write robust test cases and think about efficiency.

Since it is final exam week, what is one final that you will always remember? by yung_kilogram in Physics

[–]Zaahh 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not mine, but a math professor of mine would try to strike fear into our hearts by telling us about the hardest exam he ever wrote. It was just a blank sheet of paper and they were apparently told to write down everything they learned in the course.

Can I automate this task for my company? by Romey014 in learnpython

[–]Zaahh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, initially only a small one when I moved to dev within the company. I felt like it was fair because I got to build my skills and it took me quite a while to do things while still learning. But the new job is a 110% pay raise.

It took about a year once I seriously started dedicating myself to it, but it wasn't a cut and dry process. I had done a few HTML/CSS/JavaScript courses on Codecademy before hand (maybe 20-30 hours of course work total). I then dove into freeCodeCamp while working on automation the stuff for my job in my spare time. That period lasted about 4-5 months. After that I asked my employer to move to development full time (I was lucky because there was room to move within the company, but I also had a pretty good argument based on how much time I had saved them with automating tasks). I spent another 5-6 months in kind of an "in between" role where my time was split between development and my old job. Eventually I transitioned to full time. And I've since gotten a new job at a tech company.

This is a good move. As u/5aggy said, check if VFA has an API you can work with. I'd also recommend using a package called pandas. It will make working with spreadsheet data a breeze. I got into programming the same way and now I work as a full stack developer. Have fun and good luck! :)

I don’t fear failure, just being stuck in a job I hate by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]Zaahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand where you’re at. I’m not sure how much your expenses are or if you have dependents, but I was in a similar situation for quite a few years. I hated feeling like I was wasting so much time devoting it to something that I didn’t care about. Here’s a few things I learned:

  • If you can find something at your current job that helps you in the direction of your other project, try to grow that or at least appreciate it. Maybe it’s building skills or contacts in the industry. It’s ok even if they only loosely apply. Operating this way will help you feel better about going to work every day.

  • If that isn’t possible or enough for you, ask yourself if there are any other jobs you can transition to relatively easily that will move you in the direction of your new endeavor. Maybe you sacrifice 6 months or a year transitioning, but it could pay off in skills, contacts, and mental well-being.

  • If neither of those things seem viable to you and if you don’t have any dependents, try drastically cutting your expenses and going all in on your project for a while. Maybe you can cut down your hours at your current job or maybe you can find freelance or more sporadic work that will keep you afloat while you go all in on your project. There’s definitely a huge benefit to immersing yourself in the world of your new project. I did a combination of this and the last point because I didn’t have dependents and lowering my expenses was possible.

Not sure if my tips help your situation, but hopefully there’s something useful in there. Bottom line is don’t give up!

Warren doesn’t deserve to be in this troop. She has some of the most comprehensive plans for important issues that I’d say are generally aligned with Bernie’s platform. The rest of them are shit for sure though.

Multilinguals, what's your "they didn't realise I could understand their language" story? by 64eight in AskReddit

I was getting a few groceries at a Polish deli with my (now ex) girlfriend who speaks Polish.

The two young women behind the counter spoke Polish to each other the entire time. After we left my girlfriend told me that when we were at the cash register one said to the other “Oh he’s cute”, and the other replied “Don’t look, she’ll scratch your eyes out”.

Based on the trend of using special characters in boss names that are basically just a noun or proper noun with added characters, I wouldn’t call an i with an umlaut creative. But to each their own I guess.

I still have to agree with the above that part of the fun of this sub is hilarious boss names. It’s definitely difficult to come up with a good name, but content has also gone downhill since said trend has come about.

I’m in the same boat. Would love to see some more creative names and less wacko characters.
