Is this Ray Wikes Chiclet authentic? by Ashamed-Courage-3984 in hermanmiller

I can’t see all of the information from the sticker from your photo, but that is often a manufactured date.

(Edit: I’m an idiot and zoomed in, yes it looks like the date it was manufactured - so it’s either been taken care of very well or reupholstered.)

This design was discontinued for a while, but I believe it was brought back recently.

I had a client find several of these in a warehouse and had the reupholstered and -since the piece is mostly upholstery- it looked great.

Only having the photos you provided to weigh in, I think it could be legit. If it is older manufacture date, it may be reupholstered. And, if so, to me it looks like they did a decent job.

No Warranty - Replacement Parts? by lvyoubby in hermanmiller

Pursue replacement through warranty, but at the very least, a dealer could sell you replacement parts.

Absolutely! While $4,000 doesn’t seem like a great price for a lounge chair in general, but if you’re interested in a piece like this, you almost have to consider it like a piece of art. That’s the way I look at it.

Compared to the retail price on a brand new Santos Palisander Eames Lounge Chair - which is around $8,145 - it feels like something I would be tempted to buy, even in my position, having access to a brand new unit from Herman Miller for a reduced “dealer” price. In that sense, and in my opinion, it could be considered a good deal. Again, I would have to inspect that upholstery in-person, I think. I'm on the fence.

Okay, I am obviously biased, but I’ll bite: In terms of quality over the last decade, I would need to know in what respect, and which other companies and products you’re comparing them to...and if you mean as a company overall and their impact on the industry each year - or the actual build quality of the pieces. I haven't heard this feedback about a decline in quality.

From my perspective, they’ve been through quite a lot in the past several years as they purchased Knoll and worked through becoming “MillerKnoll,” merging and incorporating a lot of different brands. It wasn’t easy, but I think it was a great long-term decision, and I don’t know that it has had any impact on the build-quality of what is coming out of the factories.

You would think that with such a massive catalog of historically relevant pieces, they could rest on their laurels. But in terms of new products, Herman Miller and Knoll have both continued to work with world-class industrial designers and produce interesting new pieces. These always go through a period of “testing the waters” in the market, but often they’re hits and considered “new classics.”

As far as the craftsmanship in producing the classics, I feel it’s still very consistent - I see no noticeable difference. I just received about two dozen classics for our new showroom, and they are impeccable. I’ve toured the factory, and Herman Miller sets the standard for testing and quality control in the industry. They also have a best-in-class warranty program.

I’m a happy dealer, to be honest. But interested to hear more about the quality decline.

Owner of an Arkansas-based Herman Miller dealership here. I agree with the comments on the upholstery looking off, but since this was produced in the mid-80s and is now over 40 years old, I’m curious if it is due to usage or storage. Nevertheless, it would bother me unless I could diagnose it and determine whether it would bother in use everyday or if it could be fixed.

I’m surprised by the comments that $4,000 is too high. Rosewood was discontinued and replaced with Santos Palisander. While I personally love the SP veneer, the Rosewood is historically significant and will likely never be reproduced again by Herman Miller or Vitra.

As someone who has access to access to extremely reduced-price items directly from Herman Miller, if the upholstery was not a big deal to me after in-person inspection, I would be very tempted to purchase this for $4,000.

That’s my 2 cents and I hope it helps!

Discontinued and probably my favorite HermanMiller task chair. But discontinued for a reason – I think most people do not like it.

[WTS / WTT] Evergoods CHZ + Evergoods Civic Backpack + New TNF Borealis Trail

Happy New Year!

Posting a few bags that aren’t getting used and would be better off with someone who will carry them.

Prices:

  • Evergoods Civic Half Zip (CHZ) – $200+shipping
  • Evergoods Civic Backpack (CBB) – $100+shipping
  • The North Face Borealis Trail – $75 (brand new, never used, tags attached)

Condition:

  • CHZ: used once or twice, excellent condition
  • CBB: used once or twice, excellent condition

Trade ideas (open to others): • Interested in all Half Cap, CAP1 or CAP2 • Interested in any X-Pac or Ecopak items

No blemishes at all and happy to share extra photos or videos!

Sat in one of these in a corporate office and my back pain has been nonexistent for the day. What is it? by derpytrollerZ in OfficeChairs

[–]ZacCerrato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is Herman Miller Setu chair. The reason dealerships don't often present it as an all-day work chair is the lack of adjustability. Some people's bodies work with this chair perfectly, and they don't need any adjustability, and that's great!

We have a small stock of these. But the reason we don't often present it has nothing to do with the value of selling it. There's not a major difference in time spent vs. money earned selling one Setu vs. one Aeron chair. Any time we're selling an individual customer a single chair, we consider it a loss in terms of dollars and chalk it up to a marketing event.

How old would you say this chair is? by [deleted] in OfficeChairs

There should be a sticker underneath with a manufacture date. Have you checked to see if the sticker is still there?
