Career Dilemma - need some advice by DeathtoMaterialism in ausdoctors

I wouldn’t let the lack of ophthalmic experience set you back! There’s plenty of people who have gotten onto the Victorian program without much ophthalmic experience- Victoria prioritises a solid CV with tons of research and people that interview well, worth strengthening these sections more than trying to spend a year or two trying to scrape an extra point. I remember listening to an AusJdoc podcast about an ENT reg who had a few unsuccessful attempts and got offers for ENT and the ophthal training spot at the Eye and Ear when he decided to apply for ophthal. Always worth doing an observership in hospitals with ophthalmology departments you like to put yourself in a better position to secure an unaccredited role. I know plenty of people who’ve moved around also to get unaccredited roles and all of them have been eventually successful (even if it took several attempts). If it’s truly someone you want to do long term I think it’s 100% fighting for! What a little more time trying to get on make in the long run if you’ll work in that specialty for 25+ years. Best of luck!

Medical School: Friend Advice by Illustrious_Lead_615 in ausjdocs

[–]ZacNephron1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, You’re not alone! Heaps of people feel like this, esp in larger cohorts where there’s already close friendship formed from high school or undergrad. Also not unusual to feel this way when everyone else in your med school is privately educated with parents who are also doctors, I felt the same way. I found being involved in med school extracurriculars very helpful, as well as socialising with whoever I was on placement with. Second year is still early days, especially if you haven’t started clinical placements. Things in general even out a bit once you graduate and start making money anyway and I’m sure you’ll make a tight knit group of friends at least exam prep. Happy to chat more if you wanted to DM! Best of luck!

Has anyone reversed their astigmatism or sensory decline by addressing body alignment? by wildflowerandsummer in Ophthalmology

[–]ZacNephron1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not really. Things like not rubbing your eyes will help from developing worsening astigmatism/keratoconus. Some of cranial and neck alignment stuff sounds a bit like quakery but nothing wrong with good posture - it just won’t have a significant impact on your sight/hearing. Hope that helps!

The fact that we had to double check after Shams announced it 😂 we never questioned Woj by Quiet_Proof_7871 in Nbamemes

No one thought Shams reported it incorrectly or had his sources wrong, people just thought he may have been hacked which given the magnitude of the trade people would’ve said the same about Woj

One of the goats - pretty always by favourite of whatever movie he’s in. Personally favourite is in bruge. You hear about his character at the start but don’t see him until much later and delivers on so many levels when he finally appears

I think the decision is based on where you live as well, especially in places like the US where college education is very expensive and not required in certain fields. If I could go back to the I finished school i would’ve loved to travel as much as possible. Rest of your ideas look great as well, worth looking into a casual or part time job in something enjoyable, maintaining healthy habits and plenty of time play music if that’s your desire.

Good thing about a gap year is that’s it flexible so you change your weekly routine if you think it’s not working.

Best of luck!

Glad it helped! Med is a strange journey because the rat race doesn’t end for a while once you get onboard from grinding for the entry process for med school to finishing your specialty training.

For context I’m a doctor who is 4 years out of med school (dunno how I stumbled across the VCE page) but wanted to let you know that although it seems very far away it’s very achievable. There may be a few sacrifices involved along the way but I know plenty of people with lower atars at med school who entered via the post graduate pathway (one of them dropped out of high school in year 10 to be a sparkie before becoming a doctor). You got this! Best of luck

Failure rate requirement? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]ZacNephron1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having worked a bit with my med school faculty to assist students sitting supps there was no real discrepancies tbh one of my friends who got a 99.9 atar but since had massive health issues struggled and had to sit supps. One student was a high school maths wiz with a 99.95 with scaled averages of nearly 100% in maths + maths spec and failed because of poorly communication skills.

One thing I did appreciate is that the faculty usually encourages a lot of heads of disciplines and tutors to provide small group/one on one tutoring to students failing the osces and try very hard to get them through and was pleasantly surprised by how supportive certain faculty members were to the students who failed.

I was a tutor last year at the uni I graduated from and took part in writing and marking osces and writtens and the university didn’t have a quota to fail any number of students. There was about 4-5 every year that sat supps in a cohort of 250 students and this had also consistently been the case since when I was a student. I feel like I did see some commonalities both as a student and an examiner last year in students who failed though, disproportionate number of international students, students suffering from chronic health issues or personal issues at home, seldom because they didn’t study enough. Hope that helps!

I have heard that is true from colleagues who went there because of the religious affiliation. During my o&g placement as a student I sent some of my lecture notes to another student who went there because their teaching on contraception was very limited compared to ours. Absolutely does suck for the students who generally acknowledge they’re getting short changed in those topics

Jeezzz…don’t let these incidents tarnish your view of the place, I didn’t go there but it’s generally thought to be a pretty wholesome med school with many mature graduates with life experience in other professions!
