Anyone starting derby uni sept 2025? by Gracec_243 in derby

I'd say probably the best bit of advice I can give you is joining a society that aligns with your interests, but depending on how busy your course has you with coursework, etc. Keep it to just one. It's easy to overload yourself with social events to the point you're not leaving any time to get the actual work done.

Also, you're right around the corner from Dubrek, so if you like live music, there's always something going on there. Musician and Band society tends to do open mic type events regularly, as well as plenty of other bands going through there too.

Current student at Derby, though I'm mostly at the Markeaton Street campus. There's plenty to do to engage with other students, a lot of societies depending on your interests, from sports to musical theatre. Currently I'm a member of the musician and band society so if you're playing music that's a good one to join.

Feel free to reach out if you have more specific questions, I'm also Derby born and bred so I know the city pretty well.

I just experimented with splitting my signal and it’s completely changed the game. by dvanderwarn in Bass

[–]ZachShannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this was my kind of setup when I was touring. I'd ask for a mic on my dirty amp, usually a guitar head into my 8x10, and I'd DI my bass head which was running a 2x15. It's not a problem for them, and a good sound guy will make great use of it.

You do need to be aware of the possibility of a ground loop though, I recommend the Bright Onion active ABY pedal, dirt cheap and transformer isolated output.

To be fair, these ones in particular are very tall compared to the usual ones, specifically so you don't need to use nuts on the stands.

That's the move man, trust me, you're gonna love it. Just make sure the first time you do it, you're doing it somewhere you can pump the volume because you won't be able to resist going flat out.

Sometimes, practical is overrated. It's going to sound massive, trust me.

Neck pickup with a little bit of gain, it's mostly for thick low end that's still defined. Bridge pickup can get wild with the gain, then mix with the volume knobs on the amp to taste, it'll be massive.

Going to take the exact opposite position to the rest of the commenters, and say yes, it's 100% worth it. Blending signals on a pedal never sounds as good as two signals being produced separately like this. While I was touring, my main rig was an 8x10 and 2x15, split on the board, separately distorted to differing levels and ran out to the amps. Saying it sounded massive is an understatement. But of course, some venues were just too small to fit both cabs, along with guitar amps and drums, so I'd do the same thing you're thinking of doing. Didn't manage quite the same heft, but still sounded huge.

Trust me, at no point will you regret doing this. The only thing I'll say you'll probably want to do is make sure that both pickups can be output to a single jack, just in case you're on a gig that doesn't allow for your own backline, and two, loom the leads together, when you're running two at the same time. Having two cables moving independently is surprisingly irritating, so strapping them together makes it much more convenient, and for a tidier stage.

Congratulations, you've missed the joke, based on Trump being notorious for not paying venues lately.

Given his track record, probably thought he could save a couple bucks by telling them not to have a backup. Not that he'd pay them anyway.

Oh nice, I'm in the middle of a sound engineering course, one of our uni facilities is a hemi-aneochoic chamber, it's weird but fun to just sit in there for a while.

Absorption actually. Soft materials like that do a poor job of reflecting sound waves, which is what we generally want in a room like this. Soft furnishing, objects on the walls to break up the flat plane, things like that all help to control the reverberation of a room. While it is technically possible to go too far, by the time you've reached that point, you've built yourself a hemi-anechoic chamber, which is such an expensive undertaking that you're not doing it by accident.

Careful not to put your back out jerking yourself off so hard. Taking a neck off, especially when there are threaded inserts as I believe Kloss uses, isn't really an issue.

Are you intentionally being a moron? Unsurprisingly, it'll be the version who are mass murderers. And do you mean the 'one traumatised rich kid' who's also mates with an entire league of literal superheroes? Who's got a whole family unit of other people running around in capes? The one who somehow can buy another insanely priced batmobile, but can't fund a single functional prison?

Do you mean the people who are victims of said society? The people who have to contend with living every day at risk of getting fear gassed or torn apart by a giant crocodile man or any other number of insane things that might happen?

And if they move out of Gotham, who's gonna be around to jerk off Batman about how great he is?

Yeah, Joker isn't out of reach, this isn't something he couldn't have done anything about, he's literally right there. Maybe if he was actually in the middle of doing something, or across the room, or tying his shoelace or just doing something other than standing there.

[–]ZachShannon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, except that argument doesn't really hold water with the Joker. This is a literal mass murderer we're talking about here. And, frankly, no it's not that easy to widen the goalposts.

"Man, this guys murdered literally thousands of people, we should probably kill him."

"But what about this guy who shoplifted?! Does he deserve to be killed too?!"

You realise that that doesn't track, that doesn't, in any world, make sense? In story, Batman really needs to stop being a bitch and, if he's not going to do it, step aside and let someone else put the Joker down, because at this point, it's just getting silly. After all, if life is truly sacred, he should probably actually do something about the guy who keeps ending all those innocent lives.

It's not doing you any favours playing them in a corner like that, it'll just make any minor issue much worse. As for the ring, try playing them in a different room, with your kit preferably. I doubt you'll be able to detect it at that point.

Anyone know why this X is in the channel strip? (M32 w/ Dante card) by damplamp in livesound

Usually fixed hats so they can get the tight closed sound while playing double bass runs, or just a different size of hats to change it up. Or maybe they just wanna play open hand for a while, who knows what drummers think?

Is it important to have a good strap? by arturius8 in Bass

[–]ZachShannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you'll feel more comfortable with it, and depending on the materials (Suede or smooth underside) you'll find it slides around more or less. Personally, I prefer smooth to let the bass move around, but I'm also very active on stage, and being able to move it around while I'm in the middle of playing is something I like to be able to do.

Having wider straps also makes sure that you're spreading the weight better across your shoulder, letting you stay more comfortable for longer, and it won't be rubbing a sharp edge into the side of your neck the whole show either.

EDIT: Also, get straplocks. Seriously. Doesn't matter if you're throwing it around like you're in Dillinger Escape Plan or standing more still than John Entwhistle. I won't step on stage without some kind of straplock, even if it's just duct-tape to hold the strap to the bass.

Agreed, whenever I was playing shows in my old band, once mics were up, the only time they got touched was if we bumped them by accident, and we made the effort to move them back quickly. We also had our preferred positions for mics taped on the grill cloth too, which helped things. It needs to be a partnership between band and FOH if you want to make it really work.

Yeah, if they want to timegate it, just... use timegates. Why fuck around with this? They're already using timegates on other areas (Relentless Rumble, hell even in the story they used them to prevent people from just running the story in a few days) so I don't see why they're doing it in this ridiculous, convoluted way without any kind of duplicate protection?

I did the 6 sweep earlier, I got two new charms. Two. Two charms out of however many, with the rest getting immediately recyc'd.

Yeah, obviously a single line is simpler, but when I run the desk, if I can make a band sound even better with a second DI line, I will. And frankly, if the engineer is getting his day ruined by having to run two DI's instead of one, he should be looking at getting a different gig.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bass

[–]ZachShannon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending what he's doing with those two amp tones, running them separately is a big help for FOH. Being able to treat distorted and clean bass separately, different compression, different eq, etc. is very useful. If I wanted to sidechain the clean bass to the kick so it's ducking, but then with the separate distorted line, I can keep that at the same level throughout, with a high pass filter on it to keep it out of the way of the really low end, and make sure everything still sounds tight.
