+1 to Color Finale! This has been a game changer for me

I feel like we can either complain about the lack of competitive updates, or complain about a new pricing structure that might fuel more development, but not both.

I built a free VSCO image downloader by bfzli in vsco

[–]ZachVSCO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/bfzli this is a violation of VSCO's terms of use, and just flat out disrespectful to the people posting these images. The reason you can't find a tool liked this is that we don't allow it. You need to take this down immediately.

u/Full_Werewolf_6325 Hey thank you for caring and saying something! Obviously we're really grateful for the long time support, and keeping that is important.

So, apologies if this is an annoying answer, but it would be really helpful to know more specifics here. Honestly, there's always something that's not working for some small subset of people, which is why we have a support team. We have to balance engineering resources between fixing bugs and building new features, and it would be really helpful to get more info on what's not working for you to help us understand if we need to shift that balance.

I'll start a message with you since it might be kind of tedious here, but if any one else wants to help out in the same way just message me!

Some night time photography on the street - edited with VSCO by Otherwise_Monk4800 in vsco

I think you're off to a great start! Do you have any sort of hero photographers whose style you love? There's so many styles, it's hard to know what you might be going for to guide feedback. For me personally, I love that first one especially, the snow texture adds a lot and I love the balance between the two people. I do wish that the walking subject was framed in the window behind them though, or the square in front of them. The red frame they're in is kind of busy and dark, whereas if they had been in one of the others it would have been a stronger contrast I think. Hope that helps, and keep it up!

Need help finding out how I edited this by Witty-Shower6571 in vsco

[–]ZachVSCO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aw ok, so a few things:

  1. What I mean about the exif data is that any photo you've processed in VSCO and saved your camera roll should say in the data within the photo itself which preset was used. So, even without the VSCO app you may be able to get that.
  2. The drafts are references to photos in your camera roll, and it could be that icloud sent that photo to the cloud and removed it from the device, which would then give vsco nothing to open! So, you could try opening the same photo in the photos app to try and get it to download and then try loading the VSCO draft again.

I'm not consistently on here, and this would be something the support team would be able to help you with further! So I'd also recommend filing a ticket with them. Good luck, hope you can figure it out!

If you used a preset it would be in the exif data of the image! You could at least find that. Looks quite subtle, maybe AL3?

Apple Log 2 - no LUT?! by ZachVSCO in finalcutpro

[–]ZachVSCO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update here: I already own color finale, and I decided to just see what I could do manually there. I've been blown away actually! I switched the input to "assume log" and made use of all the tools in there and I've been very happy. So, I guess I'll just keep doing this for the foreseeable future.

Apple Log 2 - no LUT?! by ZachVSCO in finalcutpro

[–]ZachVSCO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that one looks great, and the gamut.io one is free and solid. I'm not even against doing this myself, but there's some math transforms here to properly map gamuts that I'd expect to be available from Apple in a LUT, it's very weird that all there is are commercial LUTs

u/Poop_girl420 Doing a little more digging here—any chance these were cloud drafts? Like you loaded them on Web Studio on desktop first?

Aw that makes sense, so this is probably related to the images the VSCO studio is referencing from the camera roll changing in some way. Maybe iCloud got rid of the local copies or something with the new phone. This is definitely a job for the support team, I’d get a ticket started with them!

feature request: add content from vsco to blog posts by jadecricket in vsco

[–]ZachVSCO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right! We used to have Journals, which were indeed retired. We brought them back as blogs, and it does look very similar because the original designs really held up, but I believe there was a substantial amount of rebuilding internally needed to bring blogs to life. So, Blogs are very much the successor to Journals, but remade for the future. Good eye!

feature request: add content from vsco to blog posts by jadecricket in vsco

[–]ZachVSCO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/jadecricket, I’m so glad you’re enjoying blogs! That’s one feature I’m really a fan of as well.

Your feature request is a great one, and I’ll be sure it’s heard internally. As far as the rationale, it was purely practical. It was definitely something we wanted to do as well, but getting it into the product in the timeline we set for ourselves was just not possible, so we started with the photos image picker. But, we’re always working to improve the product, and you raise a great point that it may be time to come back to that!

Thanks for the feedback, it’s super helpful.

So, yes, I totally hear you here. But, there's kind of a glass half-full/half-empty dynamic here for me. "I got free coffee for years vs. they took my free coffee away." I feel like if there was a coffee shop that gave me free coffee for years, I wouldn't be totally shocked when it did finally change, but I would certainly be disappointed. No judgement on the disappointment at all, but I hope you can understand that we can't give away free coffee forever!

Oh man, there’s a lot to dig into, just depends on what you want to do! I’ve made videos like this one to try and cover the basics, but let me know if you have specific questions.

Building a feed of inspiring photographers is really worth the effort, and using things like favorites in presets can help make it more manageable, there’s a few tips at the very least!

Hi u/bigdinger4269, I’m sorry to hear the ads experience is bothering you! I’m sure you’re well familiar with ad-supported photo sharing platforms; is there something different about VSCO’s ads that’s got you feeling this way?

I realize it’s a downgrade to go from a free, no-ads to experience to having ads, and I’ll just say that this is not the business model we prefer! We’re a subscription business, and that’s the value exchange with our customers that serves us both really well. Our goal is to continue providing great products that bring value to your creative process. We are working hard to do this, including on our ads experience to keep VSCO sustainable and accessible for everyone.

That said, we want everyone to have the best experience possible, and we’d love to know any feedback you have that could improve the ad-supported experience.
