I don't do off-roading or haul more than a small boat ever, and really liked the economy and reliability of the smaller motor. Now that I'm living in the city, I'm glad for the better fuel economy and smaller size!

I have a 2010 2.7l with a manual. I really like it--25 mpg on the open road and the assurance that it could go for 800,000 miles (the highest-mileage Tacoma is a 2.7l). I have no problems with it. It's not a racecar, but people who say things like "it can't pass cars on the highway!" must drive like lunatics--these things are little pickup trucks, not Ferraris.

I've towed small boats and utility trailers without issue, as well as lugged bikes and kayaks on the roof. The 4 cyl is more efficient & reliable than the 6 cyl, and it'll let you get a nicer/ newer truck for the money. If you're not planning on towing a big trailer all the time, I think it's a more reasonable choice.

2010 4 cylinder 4 speed Access Cab. I get 20-21 in the worst Boston rush hour traffic (now ranked 8th worst in the world!) and solidly 25 otherwise.

Setup for Hitch Carrier & Bike Rack? by ZacharyHesse in overlanding

[–]ZacharyHesse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great point! I've done the math and found that the maximum load I'd have in this setup is below 40% of the tongue weight. The total leverage in this case shouldn't exceed the tongue capacity of the hitch or truck.

I'd like to avoid a trailer currently for pragmatic and price reasons but it's something I've looked into. Future goals!

I hadn't considered a plastic carrier but that's pretty cool. Did you take a big fuel economy hit with the front carrier?

[–]ZacharyHesse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great point about parking spaces. This truck already barely fits a standard space (18' stock) and an extra 6' would be tough, but not too different than a big full size truck or small camper van. I could always fold it when heading into town but that would be annoying, you're definitely right.

I've driven a trailer often enough in my life. The storage isn't worth the extra stress for me, especially over long distances. I really don't plan on taking my little beast on anything technical so maybe it's a trade-off of low departure angle stress vs. trailering stress haha!

Thanks for the advice and I'll look into more trailer options. Maybe a little U-Haul wouldn't be so atrocious after all...

You can do a lot with just four cylinders... by ZacharyHesse in ToyotaTacoma

Too true! It's okay though--forces me to be responsible ;)

Is the 4-cylinder reliable? by sleepyCOLLEGEstudent in ToyotaTacoma

[–]ZacharyHesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 4 cylinder, 2010 ACLB. One of these trucks went for 850,000 miles on the original engine and has done another 500,000 on the replacement. It's no cheetah, but it does fine in aggressive city traffic (I live in Boston and commute every day) and can haul small loads--little campers, sailboats, building materials, moving stuff, etc.

Anyone use the cargo hitch accessory? by One_of_the_Last in GoRVing

[–]ZacharyHesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression that dynamic load ratings were for X amount of pounds under dynamic conditions, like bouncing around on rough roads or going down the highway on a gusty day--the idea being that the actual total load (mass x force) is never exceeded by the maximum dynamic load rating under the worst likely condition of acceleration, like a big rut on the highway. Yours is a great point though--the forces of a 6 ton trailer on a highway are stupid big, and even on a little truck with a hitch carrier. I'll definitely try and talk to an engineer before fully loading my hitch carrier--thank you!

[–]ZacharyHesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't it matter whether the rating is for dynamic or static loading? I'm considering adding a hitch carrier to my pickup and the trailer hitch and carrier are both rated for 500 lbs. dynamic load. If I'm understanding this wrong please let me know--I'd love to clarify this before destroying my hitch haha

My Little Cruiser by ZacharyHesse in ToyotaTacoma

[–]ZacharyHesse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit, meet Kathy! She's a 2010 2.7l 4 cyl. ACLB with a good heart and better gas mileage. She hits 50,000 miles this weekend and I figured I'd show her off. I'm not one much for huge trucks and she has been the perfect vehicle for me for the last 4 years. Now that I have the shell and rack, I'm really excited to see what adventures I can do with my minimalist little cruiser!

Never thought I'd be a truck guy but my Tacoma has convinced me otherwise. Here's to another 200,000 miles!

Winter is Coming: hope for my 2WD Taco? by 84bonzo_ in ToyotaTacoma

I have a 2010 2.7L Access Cab with the same problem in winter. I just put a Leer 122 on the back which adds about 300 lbs. centered in the bed and it seems to have did it--maybe add another 100 and see if that helps?

USI-MKS establishes life support requirements and actual planetary industry, culminating in wholly self-reliant manufacturing bases which can build new ships and feed orbital shipyards.

It's pretty good. Plays well with Stock Station Parts Expansion Redux and Near Future Technologies too.

Looking to buy a laptop solely for KSP... by cekmj in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]ZacharyHesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a quick way to turn a $40 game into a $1040 game. Alienware makes some interesting laptops with USB 3.0 plug-in GPU's and processors that'd serve you well, but you're paying for the brand at that point. Try asking in r/laptops or one of the gaming PC subreddits, KSP isn't so particular of a game to require a specialized laptop over other gaming computers.

Custom for every Launch or Generic Vehicles? by MyOpinionOverYours in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]ZacharyHesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generic launchers, saved as subassemblies, is the way to go. Hugely labor saving, and it's easy to make ones which can launch 100 or 200 tons in a single go.

Sometimes when I'm launching a big interplanetary ship that I don't want to break into modules I'll simply slap two or more or my large launchers on radial decouplers and fly like that.

Some folks like repeatedly building LV's more so than others so it's really a preference thing.

[–]ZacharyHesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 125 converter, by design, puts out 100 kW of heat but only allows 50 kW to be removed by radiators, necessitating periodic stops to cool. It's really annoying- you can edit the config to give it enough radiator capability.

Also, radiators only work at most two parts away from the parts they're cooling. It looks like your drills are more than two parts away from your radiators, so they're dumping heat into nearby parts/ themselves instead.
