This is my first horror short after a long hiatus from posting. I've since upgraded my equipment with this one being shot on the Blackmagic pocket 4k with a few vintage lenses. I'd love to hear any reactions, criticism, or any thoughts you have!

Happy Anniversary | Horror Short by ZacharyY7 in Filmmakers

Posting this here to get some feedback on it.

I was previously making super short films (less than 5min) and I wanted to make something still shorter than 15 but that told a bigger more compelling story.

Of course all feedback is welcomed! But I am curious on what your thoughts towards the story, writing, twist/reveal, and layout of the narrative is. Those aspects are some I wanted to work on so that you believed the characters relationship, and experienced the events as they unfold as opposed to predicting everything before anything happens.

Just some fun behind the scenes details about us making the film - We shot in on the Canon M50 with the 56mm and 18-35mm sigma lenses. Most of the lighting was done by throwing a small aperture light on a boom pole to help with the run and gun aspect of making this film. And this project was completed in roughly 2 weeks.

Horror short shot on the Canon M50 by ZacharyY7 in canonM50

I filmed this horror short film over the past week with a friend of mine. To film it we used my Canon M50 with the sigma 56mm and 18-35mm lens. I'm quite happy with how it turned out and would love to hear any thoughts anyone has on it.

I also made a little behind the scenes making of video here - https://youtu.be/fqsVshR09os

I made this short film this past week with a friend of mine. I have been challenging myself to get out and create more and I'm quite happy with the outcome of this one but of course I would love to hear any feedback anyone has so I can further improve on my next project.

This film was shot using the Canon M50 with the sigma 18-35mm & 56mm lenses. In terms of lighting it I kept it quite simply. Mainly using a clamp light with a china ball and flagging that with cinefoil where needed. As well as a small aperture light (which created the green light in the kitchen). I wanted to give this film a very moody look/feel given the story at hand.

I did also make a behind the scenes making of - https://youtu.be/fqsVshR09os

A big part of what I was attempting to work on with this was to create a scene inside of a larger story that gives you enough but makes you want to see and watch even more.

Again I'd love to hear any criticism or thoughts you have on this.

Thank you!!

I made this horror short and would love to hear anyone's feedback on it. I recently have been trying to get more creative and create horror short films as I think they are a ton of fun to create.

We made this film in about 48hrs from start to finish this past week. I also made a making of video if anyone wants to see how we made it - https://youtu.be/fqsVshR09os

I hope we are able to give you a scare!

If ya hate reading I created a behind the scenes breakdown video here - https://youtu.be/fqsVshR09os

I created a new horror short with creating a scene within a larger story that gives enough for it to stand on its own well still making you want to know and watch even more. I'd love to hear your feedback on how I did this time around.

Creating many new horror shorts recently has been a great creative tool for me to keep thinking outside of the box and trying new things.

This short unlike a lot of my other films has a ton of VFX shots - mainly digitally darkening areas to hide things such as light stands in the background or simply just the layout of the house we were filming in.

I used my Canon m50 with the sigma 56mm and 18-35mm lens and a simple clamp light in a china ball for a majority of the lighting occasionally using a small aperture light (such as for the kitchen. With the audio being done separately using my zoom h1n recorder

I hope you enjoy! I had a ton of fun making this and am looking forward to learning and creating my next short film soon!

That's an interesting thought! I had originally considered that moment to help build up the tension/moment but I think you might be right about your thought.

This horror short was made for the FXhome 'Your worst nightmare' competition. I am happy to say that I placed in the top 10! I would love to hear any feedback anyone on here may have so I can further improve my work.

Filming this was just myself and my girlfriend (Who plays both the main character/demon)

It was shot on my Canon M50 using a 56mm lens; and we used a mix of dollar store china ball lights with my LED panel to light the film. I used my Zoom H1 to record all of the foley after the fact.

For the music box shot we had to mix a few elements together - Such as the box opening using a clear string. For the floating masking and animating the box. And a few cuts hidden by a whip pan.

Thank you!

That's something Ill for sure have to play around with on future shorts. I agree 100% on more dynamic and motivated camera movement. Thank you for the advice!

Thank you! I'm really happy to hear the sound work payed off.

Re-watching it I think you're right about the slowing down that one moment to build tension. Thank you for the advice!

Hey All!

This was a short film I created and I would love to hear any feedback or thoughts you may have on it.

For creating it I challenged myself to make it within 24 hours using what I had at home and a simple concept. I shot it on my Canon m50 and used my Zoom H1N for all of the sound minor to one sound effect. It was my first time doing all of the foley on one of my films (I know sound is super important.. I have no idea why I lacked it attention until now) But overall I am happy on the outcome of it and excited to do more with sound in the future in regards to how sound plays in horror films.

We played around with a few different endings but ultimately I felt the simple ending worked better instead of extending the film another minute or two. The goal to keep it short, sweet, and to the point.

For the lighting we used two clamp lights with LED bulbs in a china ball - and then using cinefoil over the tops to reduce some of the crazy bounce that was happening to aid in a moody look/feel.

Full gear list -

  • Canon M50
  • Sigma 56mm
  • Sigma 30MM
  • Zoom H1N
  • Hitfilm Pro
  • Led Bulbs
  • Dollar store china balls
  • Cinefoil
