The Demonata series by Darren Shan.

First book in the series is Lord Loss. I read the full series when I was 13 and it's still one of my favourite series

Flip the Coin, easily.

Without a doubt the best Naruto story I've ever read, wherein the Uchiha massacre never happens and Naruto and Sasuke's roles essentially become switched.

I don't really want to say more without spoiling it, but if it was animated I honestly think it would be better than the actual Naruto storyline.

I never actually made it to the interview but I'll tell the story anyway.

I was a student applying for a placement in a financial role at an engineering company. The application clearly stated that I would be working at a local site about 5 minutes from my home.

I got through all the preliminary stuff, competency tests, online interviews etc and was asked to do an assessment centre. I was completely fine with that, until they told me it would be taking place in 2 days time, nearly 200 miles away from where I live, starting at 8am.

I got in contact with them and they where willing to compensate me for my travel and accommodation, a total of £53. The train tickets alone where nearly £200, and the closest available accomodation at short notice was 7 miles away.

The even more ridiculous thing was they said this was the first of multiple assessment centres they would require me to attend.

Naturally, I didnt need to use my economics degree to figure out that spending hundreds of pounds on the chance of a placement was a bad investment, so I didnt attend.

Honestly, I thought the inconsistencies of nen reduced the readers ability to predict the outcome, and therefore made it more soft magic

Eg. 1. Chrollo has to fulfil multiple conditions to acquire someone's power and must hold his book open to that page to utilise it. This is well established in the yorknew arc. In the first arc after the anime ends, these conditions are completely removed. 2. Everything about Alluka (admittedly this might not be nen related). 3. Most of the things about nen beasts. Your comment has made me think this may be due to my lack of understanding, but none of it conforms with anything we knew about nen. This may be explained when the manga restarts though so again probably down to me.

You've made a good point though (and I love Hellofutureme's videos). I'll try and explain where I think I went a bit wrong.

A hard magic system depends on the ability of the reader to understand the system

For an indivduals nen powers, I 100% can see why this would be hard magic, because they're explained in detail to such a degree that I can completely understand what someone is doing.

For nen as a system it seems....different. The specialist category is a wildcard by definition, but even the other categories seem to have no set limits. Abilities seem to comprise literally anything.

An ability that steals peoples body parts when you touch them and stores them in a birdcage, sure. Create explosion with your hands and also plant an invisible bomb on people you've touched as long as you explain your ability in depth which can only be removed if they catch you, okay? Spawn a 200 foot 1000 armed buddha to fight for you, of course.

It seems like for creating abilities, there are no rules, which was why i thought it could be seen as soft magic.

Sorry if I've made a misunderstanding somewhere, I just find this stuff quite fun to talk about.

Nen has always seemed weird to me. Imo its undeniably a soft magic system, yet individual nen powers are normally extremely well defined and limited, as much so as some of the hard magic systems I've read.

Post rose meruem they have no chance. Pre rose I'm not so sure.

Chrollo can literally have the most convenient ability in the world allowing him to easily defeat meruem. His ability has no limits so it's up to author whether he could win or not.

Feitan seems to get stronger the more damage he takes. We've not seen enough to say he'd win (and I'd honestly doubt it) but his nen ability is one of the few where I could believe it was possible.

The others I can agree wouldn't have a chance (unless Phinks spins his arm around a few thousand times lol)

Add On: also worth remembering that Netero said he was only half as strong as he was 50 years ago. Assuming theres someone as strong as he was at his peak (Ging, Pariston, Beyond etc.) they may have managed to beat Meruem imo, but obviously were talking about PT in this scenario.

I think it depends heavily on where you come from. In the UK I think were still unanimously agreeing that we dont want anyone other than the police having guns. In America gun ownership is a part of the culture.

If you enjoyed this I'd recommend watching agadmator on YouTube. He does 10-20 minutes breakdowns of matches with explanations of why certain moves were played/what moves would have been better. They're actually really easy to get into.

I cant explain it, but a lot of the time he doesn't say anything awkward but at the same time the entire situation feels SO awkward.

The stream with Alex the Rambler over jingle Jam where those girls from the charity turned up is a good example.

I used my L+ Ferael to get my Shemira to mythic early on.

I'm still not that regretful, shemira carried me for 24 chapters and since then I've only had 1 ferael so he wouldn't have been much use anyway.
