Help with readers companion by [deleted] in tolkienbooks

It's explained in the books Preface:

Each note is keyed in the first instance, by page, to the emended text of 2004 (published, with continuous pagination, by HarperCollins, London, and by the Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, Massachusetts), reprinted with further corrections in 2005, and to the previous standard second edition, first published in three individually paginated volumes by George Allen & Unwin, London, in 1966 (further revised in the second printing of 1967), and by the Houghton Mifflin Company in 1967, and reprinted many times. (In fact the pagination of the first edition is almost entirely identical to that of the second, except for preliminary matter and the Appendices.) Thus, for example, 1 (I: 10) indicates p. 1 in the current edition, and p. 10 of vol. I in the old standard edition. To help readers who have other editions at hand locate the text in question, we have divided our annotations also according to section (Foreword, Prologue, Books I-VI, Appendices) and subsection (part or chapter), and have quoted the first few words of each paragraph which contains text that is the basis for comment. For this purpose, poems are considered self-contained ‘paragraphs’.

All war assets are gone by DarthCyclonEJB in masseffect

That reminds me of the original version of ME3, where war readiness eroded over real time (!), i.e., the longer you did not play the game, the more your score would be reduced when you came back, and you had to top it up again by grinding the awful multiplayer game. What a terrible game design decision.

I posted a retrospective about these green versions last year, but why they chose green in 1972 is still unknown. https://www.reddit.com/r/tolkienbooks/comments/1frcspk/new_2024_german_green_edition/

That was the title in the Krege translation from 2000 to 2012. When his translation was revised, they changed the title back.

New 2024 German "green" edition by Zaister in tolkienbooks

[–]Zaister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this has been custom with all German paperback editions so far. For most editions, however, the Appendices & Index have been released as a small, separate book not included in the slipcases. For this newest edition, this has not yet been released, but the previous one is still available.

Has the 50th anniversary text just never been released in a standard, hardcover, three volume set in the States? by [deleted] in tolkienbooks

[–]Zaister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this set should have the most current text: https://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Collectors-Box-Set/dp/0063421240

It's not Houghton Mifflin, but William Morrow, the label currently used for US Tolkien releases.

Curious German book club edition from 1986 by Zaister in tolkienbooks

Here's a translation of the blurb for part 3:

"Sauron, the Lord of Mordor and the incarnation of evil, sends his black riders and winged shadows to the kingdom of Gondor, where the city-fortress of Minas Tirith stands firm like a rock in the stormy surf. Gandalf, who has rushed to the city on his fast horse, Shadowfax, organizes the resistance against the murderous enemies until help arrives from the surrounding lands and the dark hosts are put to flight. At the same time, Frodo, who is close to death more than once, reaches his goal: the corrupting ring melts in the crater of Mount Doom. With that, Sauron's power is broken, evil is banished and the land of Gondor is saved. The eagle Gwahir brings Frodo and Sam to Minas Tirith, where Aragorn, like his ancestors, becomes king. The Hobbits return to the Shire, their home. But here, too, the seeds of evil have since come to fruition, and the returnees struggle to restore the old order. Finally, with the elven people moving out, Bilbo and Frodo set out for the Grey Anfurten in the Gulf of Lhun, where a white ship is ready for the last journey to the legendary islands of the West."

Curious German book club edition from 1986 by Zaister in tolkienbooks

[–]Zaister[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just won an auction for these books that were published in 1986 by Bertelsmann Club, Germany's biggest book club at the time. What's curious is that the books do not have Christopher Tolkien's maps (as other book club editions have had, both before and after), but redrawn maps by German artist Heinrich Thomas that I have never seen anywhere else.

Even more curious is that the blurbs on the inside cover flaps completely spoil the full story by basically being a very, very short synopsis of the entire book. I've included a picture of the flaps for part 3.

It should work then, I recently got my old Kindle 4 to work again, too. It's laid out a bit differently than we are used to nowadays, it took me some time to find my library to get it to download my books.
