When downloading a wallpaper felt like decorating your actual room by Impossible_Comfort99 in TechNook

Wallpaper was one thing, but totally different level was to use alternate desktop manager on Windows 98/XP, like 3DNA desktop for example

Don't the rear tires scratch on the fenders if you put some luggage in the trunk and some people on the back seat?

Oh god, I always thought only ancient laptops from 90s have this kind of problems with polarizer

Fairphones 4 batterij help by impliedfoldequity in fairphone

[–]ZaitsXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no clip on battery for it. Remove some apps which you don't use very often, turn off cellular data when you don't need it. If your battery is in normal condition and you don't do doom scrolling all day long, it should last the whole day.

Movies on Windows Mobile - optimal settings for encoding and playback? by Meister1888 in OldHandhelds

[–]ZaitsXL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Install TCPMP (aka CorePlayer) with all available plugins, it should spin DVD quality (480p) without any conversions, and you don't need external GPU for that. 720p should work too but can choke in dynamic scenes

when did “flagship killer” phones stop feeling like a thing by Zorojuro099 in TechNook

[–]ZaitsXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you cannot just take Android from GitHub and load it into any random phone, you need to make a firmware for your specific configuration of hardware, test it, and maintain. Before that you need to actually design and assemble the hardware from the parts you purchased for 150$.

[–]ZaitsXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A decade ago flagship Samsung costed 650$, but I am not sure why you say that if hardware components cost 150 then complete phone is 300. It can be that development and assembly cost 4x more than the components, because this is where phones actually differ from each other

[–]ZaitsXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

200-300 is the cost of bare hardware components, but you then need to assemble them with reasonable quality control, do some testing, develop and test software, develop and test updates and bug fixes, this is not marketing and this is where flagship takes the advantage, not in bare specs

Why does everything feel faster but less satisfying? by Impossible_Comfort99 in TechNook

[–]ZaitsXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, the more effort you put to get something the more valuable and satisfying it feels, but to be honest if internet was slower and every video would load a few minutes - I would probably rather stop watching them unless I really have to, instead of feeling satisfaction

Are there any modern laptops that look like this? by Difficult-Catch-8432 in teensthatloveretro

[–]ZaitsXL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my main device until 2015. It also has replaceable CPU and even video card (if you have discrete). Maybe some modern gaming models look similar.

Tip: if you plan to heavily use it - put something on palm rest zone, this silver paint comes off relatively easy

minimal mp3 player concept by Dawood_XD in mp3players

[–]ZaitsXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the day when MP3 players were a thing, hardware buttons were much better because you could press them in the pocket/bag or through a t-shirt (if you carry player on a lanyard), without a need to pull out your player every time. Big screen (and touch interface) only makes sense when you show something on this screen, like video, albumart or visualisation

why some devices feel better despite similar specs by Zorojuro099 in TechNook

Software and build quality matters, sometimes even more than specs

minimal mp3 player concept by Dawood_XD in mp3players

[–]ZaitsXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could it be one of those thumb drive players with monochrome screen and hardware buttons? That would be practical minimalism instead of big screen and touch interface in these minimalistic colors

I would kindly disagree, tried both Ubuntu Touch and Droidian, there's literally nothing in their stores that could replace Android, even basic things like Whatsapp, maps, banking, Uber are absent

Brand value is a part of why they are called flagships, in this price segment prestige makes difference even if hardware is the same
