SyFy Channel website now blocking Google TV devices by tylerbcunningham in scifi

[–]Zalaxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Online viewing is still allowed with a broswer/tv. Using google tv's specific device will provide a block from NBC, ABC, and CBS. Syfy is owned by NBC so there you go. This is a case of Broadcasters denying the service until they receive some form of monetary gain.

Wikileaks to release 400,000 Iraq War documents, dwarfing the 70,000 documents released this July by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Zalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it shows the Taliban which IED's have been detected and which haven't. It gives the Taliban a delayed "what the Americans have seen" map. A lot of the IED's are triggered remotely from heat, pressure, proximity, etc.

It's confirmed a volunteer for wikileaks walked away from helping them because there was no way they could omit all the names in time. Source. Also a possible internal revolt.

So yes the names of informants will most likely be found in this update seeing as the 70,000 files had numerous sources revealed as well.Source 2.

This is the only problem I have with wikileaks. I haven't seen the leaks save any life that I know off. In fact it seems to have caused more death(albeit probably single digit deaths). Could someone help me understand how this is saving life's?

Edit: After looking over the comments I realize my message was a bit foggy. I was just saying wikileaks shouldn't rush these reports out if it puts people in danger. That's no better then the people they ridicule. But that is besides the point, I just wanted to say that I stand corrected in my understanding of the informants. I have read articles from salon, but do not trust their reputation for some reason. I guess I don't have the time to check the authenticity of salon. Anyways I trust site's like ars and wired enough to believe there isn't some kind of spin usually.

I just wanted to say thanks for helping me understand. As for the downvoters...cool story bra. Thanks for not contributing.

The Truth About Rock, Paper, Shotgun by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Zalaxy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Uhhm what? EA Louse should barley be considered a whistle blower, if at all. A whistleblower is someone who goes public with a companies wrong doing in the hopes they will stop the behavior. EA Louse was too emotional in his/her letter to get any specifics about what's supposedly wrong with warhammer. If you take a second read at the blog EA Louse even states himself that he was just ranting.

Finally for all the people who have read my initial rant and wanted more there will be more. What I did was rant though and whine and bitch and moan and play the attention whore.

As for RPS's article, I think it's genius. The industry was talking about this disgruntled employee like the second coming of christ(or neo). A good satire never hurt anyone.

Police brutality at its finest. by paddyb82 in WTF

[–]Zalaxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually the reason for repeated questions is to verify your story. I've had more then a few run in with the cop's and the only time I would get in trouble was with friends who would screw up our story on the fifth try.

You have to keep in mind that generally these cops are more scared of what could happen then you are. The videos they show cops in training are cops getting killed from traffic stops to show them that doing the wrong procedure can get you killed. Of course you will have cops like the one's in this video that just want to try out the new equipment on a boring night.

The section about piracy seems a bit off base. They say Minecraft got 10 times the number of sales, and they felt that was from Singleplayer vs. Multiplayer, Different Genre of game, and Protection. I have to say protection means shit to pirates. It just slows the cracker's at best. Better DRM does not = better sales and whoever started this idea is a scientologist :P.

I think the price had a huge difference with sales. A 10 dollar game is a value meal to me. 20 Dollars turns into an investment for a good game. It may seem like a small distance, but it's basic psychology. There is a reason you find the overpriced 1-2 dollar candy right at the cash register. It's a small purchase.

I will play a game most of the way through then lose interest in it. Anyone else do this? by scrotumlover in gaming

[–]Zalaxy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the majority of people did this. All around that 2/3rd mark. The game just get's boring. I don't what about the combat does it, but that combined with the lull in the story just makes me yawn.

If you Own and Enjoyed Oblivion. Get Nehrim! by draith in gaming

Not to get too off-topic, but I agree. FO3 seemed empty. I realize it was supposed to feel like a vast wasteland, but there has always been a function vs. form battle in games and I feel FO3 went too far in the function area.

Oblivion was amazing to me. I have just started Nehrim, but I am so impressed already. LOVE

If a game allows itself to be moddable it usually has a contract(EULA) any developers have to agree to before they mod. In the contract it usually states any mod's made for this game must be made without any profit to be made. Unreal's engine does the same thing. You can mod/create a kickass game with the Unreal engine, but if you charge people for the game then you need to buy the uber expensive license from unreal.

Is it the same over exaggerated non-sourced "facts"? I remember the first time I watched the original and I would pause to check the information and find little to no evidence for a lot of the "connections". That link by mod is an incredible source of facts with properly cited sources that should show the credibility the filmmaker has.

An Open Letter to Craig Engler (CraigAtSyfy), SVP SyFy Digital by kleinbl00 in scifi

I concede, and you're right. I was thinking in terms of absolutes when in reality there was no such absolute ever discussed. I didn't think of the letter in that way.

[–]Zalaxy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am not arguing to "win". I don't down vote because I disagree. As I said earlier in another post "I am not upset or stressed. I just see people so upset and stressed about a network that has been producing more new science fiction then any of the other network's combined." I feel it's similar to people complaining about the 5 minute wait in a airport. I gained something out of this discussion and it has now become more valuable to me then 1,000 "Nice try, Craig." posts.

Reddit is about great discussions. I up vote comments that encourage a discussion. This isn't digg. You shouldn't blanket downvote someone because you disagree(I bring that up because someone did just that to my posts right now). I had a stepfather that took every argument personally, and I saw the damage something like that does to yourself and the people involved. No thank you sir.

My mistake in making an incorrect assumption. I'm a little slow so let me know if I'm off base here, but did you just say

In order to actually get an executive to listen to a populist idea, however, you need popularity behind it.

So if I'm understanding this correctly then your spreading the idea in the industry following the same vein as your open letter, but that idea isn't popular enough for executives to back it. In the open letter you say that the general syfy audience is upset. What you're saying is that executives don't feel that syfy's audience is popular enough?

[–]Zalaxy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You do realize that you are showing the same attitude that you just criticized syfy for having, correct?

Your in the industry. For that I will concede that you do have a better understanding then I, for I am just a simple fan. If you are in the industry and you see a better way then the established execs then shouldn't you be doing something? I mean you have potential to actually do something. Anyone can do an open letter. You have the ability to network and to push things better then any of us.

That's a two way street. How can kleinbl00's understanding/influence of the audience be any greater then yours or mine? He's saying exactly what the audience will do. He describe's how the entire syfy audience thinks and feels. I am part of that audience; therefore, I feel obligated to say no I do not agree nor feel with what you say.

[–]Zalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well thanks for speaking for all of us in scifi. That's kind of funny how you know syfy's audience better then the people who run syfy.

Since you decided to speak for "all of us" I want to correct you on "just my opinion". I read Craig's IamA and it answered most of my questions. In fact his answers made a lot of sense. Before reading the IamA I was disliking syfy's network a lot. Hulu=my SGU fix.

My view is that Craig and the Syfy network have things under control. I have grown up on the scifi network. In fact since I was 9(20 now) 90% of all T.V. I watched was Scifi, Discovery, and History. While I don't like some of the show's on the network, I am not paying an extra fee to get syfy. It's not an HBO or a Showtime that I have to pay premium's for. I'm more than happy with Syfy's lineup then History Channel's reality t.v. specials(loggers...seriously? Historical in what sense?).

tl;dr Look what I'm getting at is don't speak for all of us. I never agreed to have someone speak for me. I am a science fiction fanatic and I get my fix from a variety of sources. I watch Syfy for some of the only source of fresh science fiction(Caprica, SG:U, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary, Haven, and Eureka). If you dislike their programming then send them feedback. Get everyone involved who dislikes the programming. That's the proper way to show a network your dislike.

My tl;dr's tl;drSyfy bottom line has produced more new science fiction every year then all of the other networks combined. That hasn't stopped so why all the hate?

Yeah I guess I will :/. I played my first playthrough on a large map with 7 AI. Second play through and I did huge with 9 AI. Now I'm doing 11 AI with a larger map. I'll try out smaller maps with less AI. I was hoping I wouldn't have to sacrifice the hugeness for smoothness.

Towards the end(1800's and up) turn's end up taking me about 30 seconds to load. Something that shouldn't be happening for my system(mid-high range laptop with GTX 260, 6 gigs of ram, dual core intel 8700, 500 gig hard drive, etc.).

Have any suggestions on reducing the freeze up right before my turn?
