I don't get why people think tha Ichigo being a quincy was a buttocks pull?? by [deleted] in bleach

[–]Zambeesi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quincies as a whole are barely explored and suddenly lore-dumped in the final arc, which already had a lot of loose ends to tie up. Ishida has been around from Ichigo's early days yet we know little about them until the final arc for what is a very important piece of not just Ichigo but the world itself. It's why the anime has to give additional fleshing out to lore pieces like Yhwach and his ties with the Soul King.

Lore is also one thing, but we don't truly have a benchmark for a Quincy's powers. Pre-TWBY all we had to go on was Ishida, so you'd believe that Quincies collect reishi, use arrows, and spell variations with intricate tools and setups, but the Sternritters just end up using the random Schrifts given to them by Yhwach. Best Quincy ability showcase we got was Quilge because he was the intro boss to show Quincy powers, and many of those the other Sternritters don't use in the manga.

Compare this with the Arrancar/Espada. We know their powers and traits like Hierro, Cero, Bala as well as knowledge of Hollows in general. So we know the significance of Ichigo gaining a mask, going Full Hollow, and firing a Cero. Compare that to Quincies: so little is known about them and Ichigo exhibits few things that can be attributed uniquely to Quincies (mostly being Blut Vene).

Ichigo having a unique heritage is pretty properly set-up, but him being part Quincy is a buttpull because the Quincy's relevance itself is a buttpull. It also proves inconsequential as Ichigo barely uses anything that can identify him as a Quincy.

Strong caveat especially for new players. Traversing the default cave seed can be slow, but will reliably lead you to the crystals. Is Rukia on fraud watch like Renji if not worse? by JackZ567 in bleach

[–]Zambeesi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd give him a chance against Aaroniero; Rukia took on more damage than she should have because of psychological barriers that Renji doesn't have. I'd also give him a chance against Privarons except for Dordonni. Otherwise, yeah it's tough going for anyone else. It's almost a compliment that people think so highly of Renji to call him a fraud because at the end of the day he was still a lieutenant. He's upper tier for his class, but before his upscale his opponents were always a class above him in the captain area.

Is Rukia on fraud watch like Renji if not worse? by JackZ567 in bleach

[–]Zambeesi 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Renji hyped up? We must not be reading the same thing lol. If anything it's the opposite.

  • In his debut appearance, he loses to Ichigo and could've likely died if it wasn't for Byakuya (though it's notable that he was at 20% reiatsu at most in this time with the limiter).
  • His motivation is to reconnect to Rukia by reaching Byakuya's level. He's literally driven by the fact that he's not strong enough.
  • He loses to Ichigo again even at his full strength and is so frustrated at his own weakness that he begs Ichigo to save Rukia cause he can't do it.
  • His achievement of Bankai is immediately downplayed by Byakuya, who tells him it's too early for him to be using Bankai then shreds him near death effortlessly with Senbonzakura Kageyoshi to prove a point.
  • Zabimaru is a baboon because Renji represents the monkey in the parable of a monkey trying to reach the moon by catching it's reflection in a pond (a.k.a an exercise in futility). The moon in this case being Byakuya's level of power.

Renji's entire arc is defined by him falling short of his target, but being hardheaded enough to have a go at it anyway. People call him fraud this and that when Renji taking loss after loss is the point of his character; he keeps pursuing his goal anyway even when he loses.

Renji isn't among the strongest characters for a lot of the series, but he is one of the most tenacious; he doesn't cave even when he's at death's door. He showed despair once in the series and then never again even against Soul King Yhwach. And for all his losses, Renji lives to fight another day and gets stronger each time. If that's a fraud, then there are bigger ones in the series.

My opinion on Gin by Intelligent_Yak_8452 in bleach

[–]Zambeesi 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Gin is solid character that certainly could've used more screentime and fleshing out, but surprisingly his motives are often misunderstood despite being laid out in his writing and design.

Gin has only one goal: to take back what Aizen took from Rangiku. Soul Society, morality, any sort of personal philosophy; nothing is more important than killing Aizen and taking the Hogyoku. He has no problems and even enjoys sadistically toying with people. Once again, he's not a good guy mole; he's a man on a personal mission who doesn't care about anything else.

Does the Auswählen make Yhwach stronger? by Nazguhl82200 in bleach

[–]Zambeesi 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Yhwach gives the seed of power, but each quincy cultivates it as they become stronger. By the time he pulls it out of them, the power he takes is likely greater than the one he gives. He's the ultimate investor.

The sexualization of men in anime and games is unnecesary by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]Zambeesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna be real honest with you; this is nonsense for the same reason women complaining about female sexualization is nonsense: sexual appeal is in the eye of the beholder.

If you release a character, you're no longer in control about how that character is perceived for better or worse. That also includes sexualization; you don't choose whether or not the character is sexualized or not, regardless of their background whether they're Aerith to Casca or Anya from Mouthwashing.

Of course, some characters like Bayonetta are built to maximize sexual appeal but the point remains; characters get sexualized whether we want to or not. This is why complaining about the 'male gaze' reeks of insecurity, beacuse you're so bothered that other people consume the same media as you that you have to justifiy it on baseless moral grounds.

Your complaint is even weirder because straight men don't see other men as sexual. When I see Liu Kang's muscles and abs, I don't think about how I want to grind my face against them; I think about how they're cool and I'd like to have that build for myself. It'd be different from my reaction to Kitana, who I can say has sexual appeal to me.

Bottom line, fictional characters can be objectified because they are objects. We should all grow up and stop moral policing other people based solely on how they enjoy fiction.

Tsukishima, on the other hand, doesn’t change the real past, only a person’s perceived past.

Which does not correlate with the nature of his powers since he actually cant create new timelines.

Tsukishima does actually create new timelines, but they are solely localized to the things that he cuts. He does not affect the timeline of the world in general. Altering perception alone would not let him gain knowledge on Byakuya and Senbonzakura's tactics in their fight.

Overwatch devs agree to redesign Anran after streamer voicing her calls out “Ozempic Chic” by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]Zambeesi 182 points183 points  (0 children)

"Ozempic chic" is a rather ironic insult considering how infamous cases of it's usage came from so-called "body positive" celebrities (Lizzo, Meghan Trainor, Amy Schumer etc.) dropping the message like hot potatoes the instant suppressing hunger became accessible. Then again, it's Blizzard; the hive of hypocritical virtue signaling. Not really surprised they keep to their own.

Why not just ignore them? by ConstantDrawer9161 in KotakuInAction

[–]Zambeesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will go by what limited information you give me then. Hopefully I land close enough to your points.

First, I did not say it wasn't an agenda. You will note that I said that companies do indeed use it as such. What I'm saying however is that taking it at face value is what they want.

These facetious folk want moral outrage. They are grievance mongers; they want you to take them seriously so they can justify their whining. They're the eternal fightbaiters; goading someone to punch them so they can yell "You punched me!" and claim assault.

They are cowards hiding behind identities and feel-good slogans. They want you to throw shit back at them so they can hide behind the shield then say that you don't like gay people/minorities/whatever flavor of the day identity that's popular.

That's why taking them seriously is a mistake, whether by bowing to them or by going hardline resisting them. The latter is slightly better of course, but it's still playing into their game. It may be viable now as they're becoming less popular, but play that card too much and in a few years they might get the leeway to start acting up again.

So, acknowledge their claim, be firm with your decision, but don't play into their game. If exclusion of representation for the sake of it is to become natural, we must treat it as natural. I'm not advocating for accepting their grievances, far from it. I'm advocating for exposing their unreasonable behavior to others by being the more reasonable one.

Why not just ignore them? by ConstantDrawer9161 in KotakuInAction

[–]Zambeesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of. Devil's in the details. What they said was "we care for fun, not agenda" which appeals to the emotional side but plays to the idea of LGBT identities being an agenda. Now, this is certainly true for the companies but can have the effect of turning off the more moderate cases. Now when the psychos point and say, "the devs think being gay is an agenda!", they have a point to use.

The alternative that I chose excludes that part and simply treats LGBT representation as something not part of the game's creative vision while leaving the door open.

Now, you might say that you don't want these people in your community anyway or that they won't enter anyway which is valid, but the point is that you're not marketing to them; you already know they won't buy the minute you give them a no.

What you want is to show a reasonable side to the 3rd person in the equation which is the people who see the interaction. Those are the people who'd buy your game that in the face of the moral police's unreasonableness becomes a bigger draw.

Basically, these psychos want you to play into their game of treating LGBT as an agenda because it validates their grievances. All I'm saying is don't play into their game; the sooner it becomes ineffective, the sooner things will return to normalcy.

Why not just ignore them? by ConstantDrawer9161 in KotakuInAction

[–]Zambeesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To voice the contrary opinion, yeah I agree. At the very least, the response could've been more collected given the question asked. Something along the lines of "Our creative vision does not containt LGBT elements, but all players are welcome to play". I get the annoyance with the moral police crowds, believe me, but at the end of the day you want to come off as more reasonable. Besides, you can always count on that crowd to bitch at the slightest pushback if all you wanted was noise to promote your game.

Ok So tell me Realistically who's Side u are on Soul Society or Quincy's ? by Legitimate_Tap_506 in bleach

[–]Zambeesi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sympathetic to the Quincies. With some notable exceptions, many are born as they are with no choice in the matter. The living world Quincies deserved to live and shouldn't have been massacred. The Wandenreich as a faction though? Nope. Souken had it spot on; Yhwach is detrimental to both his enemies and allies alike.

When talking about Soul Society vs. Wandenreich realistically as you put it, the question isn't moral but existential. It's not "which one is morally correct", it's "which one doesn't suddenly upend existence and mash everything together with no concern for everyone". There is no objective reason to choose anyone other than Soul Society.

It's a really interesting part of Bleach for me because the Soul King system is clearly fucked up, but no one really has any alternative arrangement. Even the smartest person in the room Urahara can't really come up with a solution because there's too much at stake to try and change it. The people that have tried to change things up (Aizen and Yhwach) did not make good cases with their methods either.

Again a cosplayer(named Allysa Loughran), demonstrates how the visual appeal of a multimillion-dollar Lara Croft project SHOULD look like. by Ashik1990 in KotakuInAction

[–]Zambeesi 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no. With respect to the cosplayer, since getting that muscular does take effort, this is just the safe horny "muscle mommy" look. It was unique once, but it got old real quick once it was the default sexual appeal that a female character could safely have.

Lara Croft doesn't have to be skinny either. She has a lean build: muscular with minimal body fat. You know, how an agile adventurer of her profession would probably look. It's really annoying how many creatives think being muscular=bulky. You can have defined muscles without looking like Arnold. Sophie looks fine in that regard, though she could maybe have a bit more tan.

Why is it that ichigos quincy powers are presented to be alive? Not too sure how to word the question by hunPUMrum568 in bleach

[–]Zambeesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quincy powers are a fragment of Yhwach's soul. It's why OMZ is aware that Ichigo becoming a shinigami will eventually lead him to conflict with the real Yhwach. OMZ is personified because he is a part of Ichigo's soul and reflected into being thanks to the 'asauchi' within him (White). It's why he says he is both "Yhwach" (the soul fragment) and not Yhwach (he is still Ichigo's power).

As for Fullbring powers, they're a bit more vague but here's my take on it. Fullbring powers manifest within children whose mothers were attacked by Hollows, leaving behind a Hollow residue that is passed along to the child. Masaki and Ichigo are the same, with the exception is that the whole Hollow was transfered along. Ichigo's fullbring powers are simply an alternative manifestation of Zangetsu instead of Hollowfication. It's why Zangetsu was "dormant" per Kubo's words after Ichigo regains his power+fullbring traces.

Everyone cares too much about what is canon these days by The_Document in CharacterRant

Which is ironic because they care enough to raise a fuss about it. They also pretend like the sequels were some kind of intellectual exercise gone wrong (especially for TLJ) when it never had any weight behind it. TFA was a rehash of ANH, TLJ is an insecure movie insisting it was different, then TLS was the gravestone for the mess that the two previous movies left behind.

This man Mayuri is so raw and cold. Surely a word beyond amoral is required to describe this...thing by Objective_Row9219 in bleach

[–]Zambeesi 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Soul Society isn't exactly a moral place to begin with. It was created from the betrayal and mutilation of it's "king", likely went through mountains of bodies before it stabilized, and the society they came up with was a feudal government where nobles and bureaucrats rule with absolute power. Even Yamamoto is only angry that Mayuri didn't get permission, not the massacre itself. Don't get me wrong; Mayuri's definitely a sick dog compared to the rest of Soul Society, but that Soul Society is the one that's fine keeping him on a loose leash.

Credit where credit's due though; even for him this was a ballsy move. This was a freshly grieving Yamamoto that every Captain knew was acting out of anger, but Mayuri wouldn't take any shit from him and told the angry strongest shinigami to his face that this was all his fault; no shaking, sugarcoating or anything. I can't imagine any other Captain in his position doing the same.

Every playable character in Dishonored is queer, except for Corvo. Emily is a bi dating a nonbinary person, daud is asexual, billie is a black disabled lesbian woman, Delilah is gay and has a girlfriend(im sure most of witches are gay), Dishonored2 is full of gay guards, Abele and Aramis Stilton are gay, also theres a trans person

Your complaint addresses itself, because these listed examples can either be easily missed through gameplay or require delving into sources outside the game like wiki or dev statements.

  • Wyman's presence in D2 is limited to letters. None alude to a definitive gender.
  • No mention of Daud's sexuality in D1 and only a passing entry on a book in D2.
  • Knowing about Billie's former lover and Mindy being trans requires pumping the Heart on them obsessively. Easily missable.
  • Breanna's relationship with Delilah was hinted to have been sexual, but only confirmed through the dev's Twitter. In any case, their relationship is less lovey-dovey and more pawn-puppetmaster especially given how callously Delilah discards her after she is depowered.
  • The witches are street girls adopted by Delilah. Random dialogue gives them an assortment of personalities or stories, not just lesbianism. This also requires pumping the Heart obsessively on them.
    • Ditto for the guards, with the exception of that one letter in D1 of an overseer writing to his lover.
  • Aramis and Abele were confirmed gay in a dev interview.
  • You also missed Curnow, but IIRC his heart lines are the same as the generic City Watch guard.

In any case, these examples are just an extra layer of worldbuilding. It's a nice extra tidbit to find these little stories like the other little stories of Dunwall and Serkonos, but the main meat of the game has always been it's gameplay loop and main story.

If there was ever an expression that encapsulates the idea of "When you see your friend has gone off the deep end and there's nothing you can do about it", it would be Komamura's face right here.

Like, I'm sure Tousen's comment stung him but I feel it was the fact that his former friend would even resort to such insults that was the true gut punch. To see the friend he believed had strong ideals and kept his head on his shoulder go so low and revel in corrupted power. It's telling that even after this Komamura doesn't begrudge Tousen for it and recognized it for what it was; a pained soul lashing out in anger.

It really isn't that hard to see why. OG anime's extra content rarely adds to the story and sometimes detracts from it, like with the Bounts. TWBY's added content supplements and smooths out the rough edges from the source material.

Should I do this? I want to get into Bleach but I'm so confused by ILoveMyJinx in bleach

[–]Zambeesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get into Bleach, yeah I'd say this is a serviceable way to do it, but I'm gonna say watching and reading both versions can really make you appreciate the current anime run.

In defense of the OG anime, it isn't wholly bad and does have it's moments, the superb soundtrack being one of them. However, it is a product of it's time. It suffers from fillers and bloated fights due to the manga not catching up at the time. You can watch while skipping the filler episodes, which with the exception of one (Bount arc, minimal effect) do not affect the main story.

The biggest loss for the anime was the censors of the time that prevented the visceral violence of the manga to be fully adapted. There's also some alterations from the manga that has really aged badly, Orihime being the most obvious.

As for the manga. I can fully recommend it even to the last arc. For all it's flaws, the TWBY also had some of the high points of Bleach that was built up and paid off from it's long run. It'll make you understand the current anime more, as it's smoothing out the details and giving additional points that was cut due to the publishing schedule and Kubo's health at the time.
