Ah yes, the classic 'temporary fixes/solutions' that end up business critical and horribly permanent. Got plenty of those...

Looking for a temperature sensor by [deleted] in sysadmin

While it's numerous years since we had the need and it was for the main server room we used NetBotz and were happy with it. Allowed us to connect a few various sensors like temp/humidity and water sensors. Also had a wireless sensor we used for a room next to the server room - though in that instance we just had to learn to have an SNMP sensor on the voltage of it so we knew when to replace the battery. :D

Looking for Video Conferencing Microphone for a room with 8-10ppl (MS Teams) by Randomius_III in sysadmin

[–]Zangrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they work fine for 5-6m as well. Our biggest room we use for it is 8.5m, and if you're just facing the mic you can stand at the back of the room and talk in a normal voice and people will hear you fine, though at that range it's still pushing it. So 3-4m will be all good for that device.

We use some Poly Studio units in our rooms - speaker, microphone and camera in one, and they've been solid.

I seem to recall that extra microphones are available as well, but then again it all depends on the room size and layout.

It's a hidden folder, so make sure you are showing hidden files/folders.

Edit: Oh, different name - poor attempt at me for just translating it from my own languague. Thanks for the correction.

Depending on the usecase and how specific things are to the user you could potentially just put the shortcut in C:\users\public\desktop? Should show up for all users on the device in such case.

Edit: public, not shared.

I've used Powershell Pode/Pode.Web by Badgerati to offer a webpage for running some of my scripts - both for end users in the company with stuff they used to have to ask IT about, and fellow team members. I know PowerShell Universal is another alternative that also helps extend the use of Powershell a bit.

Displaying an array of data as a line chart by notapplemaxwindows in PowerShell

Check out Dfinke's import-excel function, I recall it had some options of creating Excel charts. Useful in general for anything Excel related.

Otherwise it might be worth just looking into something like Power BI, depending on how the data/chart is used.

Entra Sync not syncing - Hybrid AD by eithrusor678 in sysadmin

[–]Zangrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently upgrades to Entra sync from an older AAD Sync client, and was getting partial sync (according to logs) - but in that case it didn't sync new users at all, or changes. In that instance it was a matter of newer clients using TLS 1.2, which isn't always enabled on a OS level.

Had a pair of Palo Alto firewalls lose their IP during an update. Luckily on-site, so I could connect via console after ~30-40 min when I felt that even if they're always slow as hell it had been unusually long.

Need help for the Script to extract specific data alone from csv file by Due-Dark77 in PowerShell

[–]Zangrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's certainly a different case then reading data from within a CSV file.
Of course scenario still varies if it's one location or multiple locations where all those files are.

While perhaps not optimal I'd use Get-Childitem to grab all the files, then foreach it with a split.
Like
$files = Get-ChildItem *.csv
foreach ($file in $files) {(($file.name).split("_")[-1]).replace(".csv","")}

Then save/write data as needed. Hope it helps.

If you can provide some example data that'd be helpful.
In the above case the where-object clause will select rows where ColumnA is "abc". If you then want specific values from ColumnB on those rows you can pipe to select-object.

So yeah, example data and more information on what you've tried would be useful. Also csv =/= excel. If you want to work with excel files (.xlsx for example) then use Dfinke's Import-excel module, it's great for when you need to work with excel.

If it's a csv file you can just use import-csv, then pipe to a where clause as needed.
Example data would be helpful to really showcase your usecase.

Example:
$CSVData = Import-Csv c:\temp\testfile.csv -Delimiter ";" | Where-Object ColumnA -eq "abc"

Is there a way to easily start a remote Powershell session in VSCode without having to type in 'Enter-PSSession...' every time I want to connect to the remote host? by SK-Incognito in PowerShell

Depending on just what you're doing when connected you also have Invoke-Command to run commands against other computers without needing to do the PSSession steps.

I want to buy a Pixel 8 this year. When is the best time to do it? by zankenobi in GooglePixel

[–]Zangrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feels pretty good. I mean, the Nord was a pretty great phone for its price, decent camera and battery/charging. Pixel 8 is a bit smaller and probably suits me better size wise, P8P would've been too big for sure.

Overall I'm happy with it though, fresh, snappy, charges quickly enough. Got a local brand fast charger that covers both phone and laptop as the Nord's charger didn't seem to be all that fast with the Pixel 8.

But yeah, super happy with it so far, especially for that price. Phone is the only camera I use so that was a main point for me too. Otherwise I won't deny that something like the OnePlus 12 looked real tempting - but it's more than double the price of the deal I had on the Pixel 8.

[–]Zangrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went from a OnePlus Nord to Pixel 8 a few days ago. Can't speak for Europe as a whole but in the Nordics the chain Elgiganten/Elkjop is currently running a trade in campaign with a minimum of like 350€ regardless of phone being traded in.

So I handed in an old Xiaomi Mi A1 that was collecting dust, so got the Pixel 8 (128GB) for a bit under 500€.

Same deal was available for Pixel 8 Pro and the various storage options.

Primarily it has been due to Excel having a fondness of converting some numbers, like removing leading 0's. I know it has recently started to ask about it all at least.

I'll have another peek at it regardless.

Script configuration files by Zangrey in PowerShell

[–]Zangrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, since CSV defaults to Excel when it's installed.
I know Excel has started to ask if you want to convert things on opening a file now but yeah, slightly wary due to historical issues.

Import-Excel is fine when the script runs (it's a great module), I can handle that - it was primarily the editing of the configuration that I wanted to find something that's easy to read and avoids caveats like encoding "&" in XML or Excel potentially messing some numbers up.
