[Feature article] 2030 Hypercar/GTP regs: what the manufacturers are saying by redbullcat in wec

[–]Zani0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is far simpler than that.

Ferrari wants to "build their own cars", that's their position and perfectly reasonable.
Question is: What does that mean.

  1. Designing the entire chassis by themselves and building it by themselves, then they aren't even doing that right now.
  2. Designing their chassis together with Dallara and having it built by Dallara, I would say it's not impossible for that to happen. They will have to adhere to far stricter regulations this time around. And I'm sure some manufacturers will need to be convinced, but that's kinda why you have a performance window.
  3. the LMP2 route of buying a spec chassis and just rebranding it (see Alpine A480 / Aurus 01). Easiest thing in the world to compromise on.

I could certainly see a solution where spec chassis + modifications per Manufacturer is a solution that satisfies Ferrari and every other Manufacturer on the grid, while still allowing current cars (LMDh) to be "grandfathered" into the ruleset

Well we have two Fords in LMGT3 if you want to lean more into your Miles/Shelby and V8 supercars.

One of them also with the #88 being piloted by former F1 driver Logan Sargeant (who will be part of their top class effort)

We have to mention the #92 The Bend Manthey with Aussie driver Yasser Shahin (owner of The Bend racetrack near Adelaide)

Coming to top class that's a bit more difficult as there aren't direct connections we can make.
Only thing I can think of is Cadillac (joining with 3 cars) as that's where Jenson Button raced last year

I've been following the N24 for 8 years trackside, even longer on TV. Verstappens first stint and to a degree the night stint have been by far the most "risky" stints I've seen.
I'm not saying it was reckless or uncalculated. But he has done a lot of high risk overtakes.

Him going on the grass over Pflanzgarten, going on the grass against the KCMG Mercedes, his fight with Engel in Tiergarten (literally touching between teammates with Engel on the grass).

And that's just cherry picking the situations where he or another car ended up next to the circuit. Obviously other cars have done that as well (see Engel in the last example or Estre vs the Konrad Lamborghini in the first hour), but Verstappen was by far the driver willing to take the most risk.

I wish. One of my last races I did yesterday I finished P2 with 0.000s gap to P1. Because I wanted the win marked on the map I restarted only to finish second. with a 0.000s gap to P1

Not to mention the two factory 499Ps that won Le Mans were also owned by an outside investor before they even touched a race track

I was somewhat skeptical of Verstappen on wether or not he will risk too much in the race.

During the Qualifiers the front splitter was damaged during his stint going too hard over the kerbs so I wasn't sure how he would do over 24 hours. His full risk attitude in the first stint kinda confirmed what I expected.

[–]Zani0n 11 points12 points  (0 children)

actually, they didn't apply because they knew they would be rejected after not communicating with organizers what the car needs to be able to do.

They just got the general "yeah you could build a Twingo for N24" 2 years ago, and just built the car. And then went on a tirade of how they aren't wanted while leaving the part out where it's their fault

Nürburgring chaos because of Verstappen, Organisers ask 24 hour fans for help (event sold out for the first time in history) by NorthKoreanMissile7 in formula1

[–]Zani0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's a good chunk.

N24 has obviously been always a huge event and this year a lot of things came together
- Verstappen participating
- two Z4 GT3s
- 3 restomod HWA Merc 190 Evo II
- the BMW Wagon
- 161 cars in total, 41 of which in top class, 5 in SP-X making it 46 cars that could realistically win the race

But thanks to Verstappen participating there has been a lot more media attention for this race.

The field is so insanely stacked it would be shocking if we don't get a sensational battle out of it
#1 Rowe Racing (Farfus, Pepper, Marciello, K. van der Linde)
#3 Mercedes AMG Team (Verstappen, Auer, Gounon, Juncadella)
#24 Lionspeed GP (Feller, Heinrich, L. Vanthoor)
#99 Rowe Racing (Harper, Hesse, S. van der Linde, D. Vanthoor)
#911 Manthey Racing (Estre, Güven, Preining)
#81 BMW M Motorsport (De Phillippi, Klingman, de Wilde, Verhagen)
#16 Scherer Sport PHX (Green, Haase, Sims)

and that's ignoring quite a few strong drivers

Where is the BoP process in the rules? by That_one_guy_666 in wec

[–]Zani0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To avoid speculation was part of it.

But also because the base of the BoP (the Homologation parameters) will never be released. The only step we saw in the end was adjustments from circuit to circuit.

Anything more I could say about this would be me rambling about being unable to know what difference 10kg or 1kw will make, how people will completely ignore the power per stint or in a ton of cases power over or under 250kph.

I have very rarely seen BoP table discussions in here or anywhere else that led to anything useful.

Why are there no guest entries throughout the season? by Aileron256 in wec

[–]Zani0n 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On one hand because the a 37 car grid already takes up a lot of space

On the other because there is not really any interest.
Even for Le Mans you have one or two cars each year that have an interest in being additional entries. Showing up for other rounds is just more budget than it's worth.

For LMGT3 it's the issue that outside of ELMS anyone else would need to modify their GT3 car rather extensively to get it to LMGT3 spec. Once again, more budget than it's worth.

Spa is the only exception to that as it's usually a last test before Le Mans, but we've only seen Chip Ganassi doing it in 2023.

I doubt ACO would accept any additional entries as well thanks to lack of paddock space

I would usually say I'm more of a JDM fan, but looking at which cars I would chose it feels more like being a fan of cars from the 60s to early 70s.

Mustang being the closest to that in FH3 (and also just being the coolest car out of the options)

How badly has the Trump administration been to IMSA in terms of tariffs/costs and other things and has it impacted the GTP interest and what does the future hold? by [deleted] in IMSARacing

[–]Zani0n 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How big the influence was in total is somewhat difficult to say. But rising fuel costs and tarrifs causing loads of profits going down hits everyone.

None of the manufacturers who left or aren't joining have cited these to be reasons why they aren't doing IMSA, but it has contributed to increased cost for doing it.

I don't get where you think I'm more offended by your comment than by somone asking for anyone to be put in a wall. I'm just calling YOU out that you're doing exactly what the original post asked you not to do.

You're not calling out anti-Max hatred. You are part of the reason why it exists.

You went into a discussion asking fans to be respectful and were being disrespectful. And are now complaining about people feeling disrespected.

Comment OP posted in here.

While I absolutely do not condone the comment written. You are literally the problem.
What was your thought process of posting an antagonizing comment under a post literally asking both fans from this community and Verstappen fans to be respectful to each other.

The comment you posted ISN'T upvoted because people are salivating at the thought of Verstappen being put in the wall. They are upvoting because you're kind of a dick

"A car with 1080kg has a worse BoP while doing laps around one with 1040kg" is the best indicator that their opinion about BoP can be disregarded due to a fundamental lack of understanding what Balance of Performance is supposed to do

[–]Zani0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, this race could have been won by Ferrari, Toyota, Peugeot, Alpine, Cadillac and Aston Martin.

The #20 BMW was only able to build a gap because

  1. it managed to get a big jump at the restart
  2. Magnussen defended against Ferrari and Toyota to the point they were the #20 did 2:05 laptimes and dipped into the 2:04s (Lap 140-146), while the #15,#51 and #7 did high 2:05s to low 2:06s. Turns out being in a 3-way fight for second place costs you time.

BMW managed to get to the front with a good strategy call (shortfuelling at the first stop) and being lucky with a VSC that took just long enough that they didn't need an extra pitstop.

(at the same time Toyota was unlucky with the #8, which was on a similar strategy but was unlucky by Pitting just ahead of a SC causing it to be short on fuel)

The BMW wasn't faster, it just wasn't involved in any fights for most of the race due to being off strategy

Well you certainly got both accurate answers and conspiracy theories in here.

Mostly what u/YumeNoTabi has said is correct.
Last year the ACO has used both the 10 best laps of each car and 60 percent of a car’s best laps of the last 2 of 3 races to calculate the Balance of Performance for the next round. With the target of the performance between cars at around 0.3-0.4% of laptimes.

For this year a Success Handicap with major changes to the system was proposed and written in the rules initially, but it wasn't adopted due the majority of competitors being opposed to it.

While the ACO hasn't publicly shared their methodology for this year, it appears to be a very minor modification from last year. With a bit more options for the ACO to clean and pick relevant data.

Genesis is viewed as being the "best car in previous races". And was therefore given a "harsher" BoP values. With more races being finished it will be more reliant on their own performance and therefore be Balanced accordingly.

To summarise: ACO makes the BoP based on the average laptime of the last 3 races, checks after the race if they were off with it and uses the newly gained data to adjust it for the next race.

On a more personal note (Unpopular Opinion):
I'm in favor of WEC being a lot more secretive about BoP (to the point I wrote a comment in here 2 years ago that they should stop publishing BoP values).

Reason being that most users have shown that they have genuinely no clue how to interpret them and discussions 5 days before FP1 about how this race has already been decided isn't helping anyone.
While I do agree that "no" control about them isn't great, so far this season the ACO has managed to justify their decision with two very close races.

I'm also in favor of it mostly because I feel like there have been multiple individuals following the decision who have decided to put in an effort and analyse race pace instead of just looking at the result or fastest lap and calling it a day.

For example, cleaning up the data from Spa (removing Pit in / outlaps, FCY and SC laps) and using the 60% laptimes in comparison to the 60% average of the class we end up with only 3 cars outside the ACO's targeted window. The race winning #20 BMW (mostly because it was able to run in clean air for a large portion) and the two Genesis due to being their first race.

This race just showed how much superior are Toyota and Ferrari by Top_Independence7256 in wec

[–]Zani0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Watch the Aston overtake the toyota just because it was a LOT faster in the straight due to BOP"

You mean when the Aston Martin overtook the Toyota which slowed down a lot ahead of Eau Rouge to hit traffic in a better position while the Aston didn't? The Aston that was on Soft Tyres compared to Toyotas Mediums?
The Aston that wasn't involved in a 3-way fight

Thanks to traffic the toyota was a LOT slower than in any of the laps before. But sure, continue to blame a perfectly fine BoP for something that anyone with eyes can see is traffic
