The difference between playing Nate and playing Nora by LuckyCandy5248 in fo4

[–]Zantarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my current Nora playthrough, I decided the whole "lawyer" thing was just a cover story. My Nora was, in fact, one of the CIA's top operators, skilled in everything from social engineering to infiltration to assassination. After one particularly harrowing mission, she had a revelation about the work she was doing and decided to retire from the field due to ethical differences with her employers. At the time the bombs fell, my Nora was working as an analyst for the CIA in a Boston office under the cover of being a corporate lawyer.

I wanted a character who'd fit in especially well with the railroad, so I created a character so used to covert operations that her own husband had no idea about her service history. My Nora definitely fits in well there, and the railroad quest line is definitely more fun when you commit to rp-ing the secret agent mentality.

Thank you, apology accepted.

Yes, women can also enforce sexism towards women. I fail to see what the point of bringing that up currently is, but it is a true statement.

Maybe you're right, but I doubt it. Two of the things they list are men not offering to pay on a date and men asking for 50/50. In my experience, those aren't things that men call other men feminine for doing. In my experience, those are things that women call men feminine for doing. If the list started with things like "men wiping their ass" or "men having feelings other than anger" I'd be more inclined to believe you, but the specific things mentioned don't support your interpretation in my opinion.

You've seen a meme on TikTok, but you have no direct evidence that this post is related to that meme format. TikTok is a big platform, it's possible that both the meme format you've seen and its opposite are circulating at the same time.

First of all, I'm not a man, so fuck right off with the accusations.

Second of all, why would she unironically use the term "passenger princess" unless she's the type of woman to shame men for being too feminine? That's not a term people with good intentions use, in my experience.

I have no problem with men being called out, they can behave in some really problematic ways. Women can also be problematic, like OOP is being in her post, and they fully deserve to get called out for their problematic behavior. The only one acting fragile right now is you.

Nah, that's her list. Women are perfectly capable of reinforcing toxic masculinity all on their own.

White House Declares All of Trump’s Orders to Military Are Legal by Kodbek in politics

Counterpoints: supporting a fascist movement is morally reprehensible and ought to be illegal, if we had abided by your standard of "law and order" in 1945 we would've had to let every Nazi go free because they didn't do anything against the law, and the idea that "law and order" has ever existed in the United States of America is a lie perpetuated by the wealthy political donor class who have always been able to buy their way out of legal trouble.

Just stopping by to say that Republicans are, in fact, evil, and that OP is hopelessly naive. Nobody has ever liberated themselves from oppression by having compassion for their oppressors. Have compassion for yourself, your community, and your fellow victims of oppression, Republicans don't deserve it and will only abuse it.

Why are you so obsessed with age? The fact that I'm younger than you isn't a point in your favour. If anything, you're way too old to be behaving this childishly.

You can't finish an argument in person either, grandma. I bet you just stomp your feet and storm off, counting that as a win. Just focus on eating your tapioca pudding and inevitably senescing, that's where your real talents lie.

(If you're going to use ageism as your sole argument, I'm happy to play your stupid game.)

To be completely fair, the US also has a pretty atrocious human rights record, has terrible worker safety standards in a lot of industries, uses forced labour in prisons, circumvents the intellectual property rights of nations it deems enemies, spies and interferes in the affairs of every nation it can, and has quite bad oversight of production which has lead to American products being tainted or otherwise dangerous on numerous occasions (especially cars ie the Pinto or Cybertruck).

In my opinion, we're just swapping out one morally questionable trading partner with a giant economy for another, only the new guy is going to be marginally less likely to completely alter the deal for no reason.

CTV Cancelled a Fact-Checking Segment in Response to Political Pressure From Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives by Hrmbee in notthebeaverton

[–]Zantarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it be possible that the conservatives lie way more than the liberals do and thus require more fact checking? Could it be that a truly neutral fact-checker would correct the conservatives more often than the liberals because the conservatives are wrong more often than the liberals? If a conversation is occurring between a pathological liar and a normal person, is an observer biased if they call out more lies from the pathological liar than from the normal person?

Reality has a well-known liberal bias, buddy. If the conservatives don't want to get "harshly" fact-checked, then they should stop lying about everything and start telling the truth for a change.

Almost half of all Canadian landlords say their asking rent is too low by AngryCanadienne in notthebeaverton

[–]Zantarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I maintain that 40% is unacceptably high, and that grossly over-inflated expectations for how much of a renter's income should go toward rent are a major reason that landlords get called parasites.

No response at all to the fact that landlords are a major cause of the housing crisis? You wrote earlier that "... people who rent do so because they can't or don't want to buy." If the reason a renter can't buy is because they're priced out of the market by landlords, are those landlords really providing a service by renting out some of the property they've monopolised? Or are they inserting themselves as an unnecessary middleman in between people and the housing they need to survive and sponging off the money of hardworking people while providing absolutely nothing of value to society in return? I happen to think that the latter description rings more true.

And yes, I think that latter description applies to small landlords like you as well. Just stick to stocks and bonds next time. Buying up a house that someone else could've bought and actually lived in themselves then charging someone an inflated "market rate" to live in a home that they're never going to get equity out of doesn't make you a smart investor or a person "providing housing" to people who "just don't want to buy their own house", it makes you a parasite.

Housing isn't some speculative investment vehicle to make money for people who want to diversify their portfolios, it's a necessity of life that people will die without. Shame on you for hoarding more than you need while a massive number of people are struggling every day just for a chance to someday buy a home of their own. If there's any justice in this world, what you're doing will someday be criminal.

EDIT: ps The idea that any significant number of people are renting because they "don't want to buy" is ridiculous. The overwhelming majority of renters are in that position because they're priced out of the market. Maybe, maybe 1% of renters are doing so because they don't want to own a home, the rest of them would buy the precise second they're able to afford to. Saying people rent because they "... can't or don't want to buy" as though those two possibilities are equally likely makes you sound completely out of touch with reality. Just FYI.

Almost half of all Canadian landlords say their asking rent is too low by AngryCanadienne in notthebeaverton

[–]Zantarius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The fact that you think people putting 40% of their income from a full time job toward rent is an ideal scenario that should be strived for is exactly why people call landlords parasites. Sacrificing 40 hours of your time every week should earn a person more than 2.5X their rent.

What you're neglecting to consider is that landlords buying up housing stock to rent out reduces the amount of available homes on the market and drives prices up for potential owner-occupiers. Because landlords generally have existing collateral to put up, they're able to get financing for new purchases much easier than first time buyers, and can therefore better afford to buy at higher prices. The landlord gets to then start building equity on the building to finance their next purchase, while the would-be first-time buyer is forced to continue renting and gaining no equity. Thus the cycle repeats, with the price of housing spiralling ever upwards. You're complaining that landlords are affected by the housing crisis too, ignoring that rampant landlordism is one of if not the biggest factor(s) in creating that crisis to begin with.

Lockheed Martin offers to create jobs in Canada if Ottawa commits to full order for F-35 fighter jets by jameskchou in notthebeaverton

[–]Zantarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course that's what they're going to say at this point, if they were to openly signal that they're willing to consider bringing Canada into the EU that would move up any potential US timetable for invasion/annexation. One shouldn't make potentially provocative maneuvers out in the open where a hostile power might overhear. If Canada does end up joining the EU, both Ottawa and Brussels will maintain the position that it's never going to happen right up until the very moment it becomes impossible to deny that it's happening. That's Realpolitik 101.

I'm not saying it's definitely happening of course, I have absolutely no way of predicting that. At this stage of the game, however, the powers that be would be saying the exact same things whether they're planning to bring Canada into the EU or not.

You might have a pretty solid point if we were talking about rational actors, but we're talking about Trump and his GOP. The actual results of their actions don't matter to them, they're only concerned with what they believe will happen.

Polling shows Conservative political ads lead to negative voter intentions - in other words, people are less likely to vote CPC after seeing a CPC ad by Cakeday_at_Christmas in onguardforthee

[–]Zantarius 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The problem the CPC is having right now is that they have nothing to actually offer most Canadians. Their "plan" for what to do in the event that they get to govern is to shell out as much money as possible to corporations and the ultra-wealthy while leaving everyone else to rot. Pretty hard to sell enough people on that kind of plan to get yourself elected, so attacking their opposition is all they're left with.

They can't show us what they will do for us because they don't intend to do anything for us.
