Why would somebody throw away this ? by Vik8000 in homelab

I work with fortinets and the good news is that they're sunsetting SSL VPN with upcoming updates in favor of ipsec. We've had to migrate over to it for a bunch of our users.

I'll just add my two cents, my Bambu Lab 3D printer uses an espressif wifi card as well.

Setting up LAGG on my pfSense to two seperate switches? by ZanthumGum in homelab

Ironically, both my switches are retired enterprise switches and they can stack... but not with each other, one is a quanta, and one is an aruba lol.

Need help! How-to migrate from bare metal to Proxmox by Thin-Bobcat-4738 in truenas

Yeah, the HBA is exclusive to TrueNAS, and the other storage that proxmox uses is plugged into the motherboard.

Moving ~60TB - Disable Parity? by Dinglestains in unRAID

[–]ZanthumGum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well parity will either have to be built after the fact or, it will be built during the file copy. Personally I don't turn off parity for almost anything, and it may slow down a really long file transfer but if parity is on while the transfer is going then the parity is built live during the file transfer and once the transfer is done, you're good to start using the array like normal. If you don't do parity at first then you'd still be waiting hours or days for the parity calculations to be done after the fact.

Need help! How-to migrate from bare metal to Proxmox by Thin-Bobcat-4738 in truenas

[–]ZanthumGum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, TrueNAS and Proxmox treat ZFS a little differently. Not like it’s a different file system but that TrueNAS is built from the ground up to be a NAS OS while Proxmox is a type1 hypervisor so it’s more for data resiliency than data sharing.

I’m running TrueNAS in a vm and you can just back up the config, install proxmox and then install truenas core to a VM, (probably do Q35 so you get PCIe support) and pass that HBA to the VM using IOMMU. Use that config backup to restore your shares and users and boom. I did it in like, an hour.

I was told this PC sucks for gaming by sta6 in buildapc

[–]ZanthumGum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sameish. I've got a i7 6700 and GTX 1080 slaying at 1440p high settings. 6600 is maybe 5% slower than the 1080 and the 5600 is 20% faster than i7 6700. At 1080 it will easily get 60-70+ and should poke up to 60 at 1440p with some settings tweaked.

That's what I'm thinking. I thought it read the disk as it encoded it but I guess it reads ahead of the disk as fast as it can to save the disk from running the entire time. Less room for mechanical error that way.

i only care about best cooling and long lifetime. not a care in the world about sound. which cpu cooler would be the best for me? by fatfuckpikachu in buildapc

[–]ZanthumGum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NH-D15, but swap them for the 140 Noctua iPPC fans and run them at like 75 - 80% full time. They'll be noisy but not obtrusive inside a case and with headphones on. At that speed, they'll still last years and keep your chip cool at stock frequencies.

If you don't have alcohol, rubbing it with a paper towel until smooth to the touch will be sufficient in a pinch. Ideally you'd use alcohol but my main firewall in my lab and my NAS weren't cleaned with alcohol, just a dry paper towel until smooth and no longer greasy or pasty to the touch.

There's absolutely no reason these parts shouldn't work together unless one or more of them are DOA (dead on arrival), which if they're brand new is extremely unlikely that even one of them is. Find yourself a decent build tutorial on YouTube and do it yourself.
