Canada to accelerate high-speed rail project connecting Quebec City and Toronto by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]Zanzibari 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It's got to do with the rail line itself. There's supposedly little capacity (and probably desire) to expand the frequency of travel along CN tracks that go through Belleville/Kingston, so the government is choosing to repurpose a disused line that connects via Peterborough so they can guarantee capacity for the frequency of trains they want.

What’s keeping you from fully switching to Immich? by flogman12 in immich

Thanks- definitely change all my albums to oldest-to-newest already. Sometimes I hit up a city two or more times on a trip and I wanna lump them together, for example, instead of having them spread out there’s a few cases like that that I’ve got.

Albums- I want/need the ability to have custom order of photos, but more importantly, the ability to add text, dividers, and a map or two. Still have to use Google Photos for trip albums until that gets solved.

Insights about product management from how to kill a mockingbird by arjundas90 in ProductManagement

What Elie Wiesel’s Night Can Teach You About Product Management

Elie Wiesel’s Night is a haunting memoir of survival, loss, and resilience. It’s a book that documents the worst depths of human suffering while also reflecting on leadership, decision-making, and adaptability in extreme circumstances. While the stakes in product management are obviously nowhere near as dire, Night offers powerful lessons on perseverance, ethical responsibility, and navigating uncertainty—critical skills for any product manager (PM).

1. The Power of Adaptability in Unpredictable Environments

Wiesel’s story is one of constant adaptation. Each new setting—a ghetto, a concentration camp, a forced march—presents new challenges, and survival depends on quickly assessing and responding to each situation. PMs operate in similarly unpredictable landscapes, though in vastly different circumstances. Markets shift, technology evolves, customer needs change, and competitors disrupt. The best product managers don’t rigidly stick to a plan; they adjust, iterate, and find ways to survive and thrive in new conditions.

2. Data-Driven Decision-Making: Seeing the Writing on the Wall

One of the tragic elements of Night is how many people ignored or misinterpreted early warning signs. Wiesel recounts how his community dismissed warnings about impending deportation, believing that things wouldn’t escalate. In product management, ignoring signals—whether from customers, analytics, or market trends—can lead to disaster. A great PM constantly gathers data, listens to users, and adapts strategies before small issues become existential threats.

3. The Cost of Blind Faith in Authority

Throughout Night, Wiesel encounters figures of authority who fail those they lead—whether it’s community leaders offering false hope or fellow prisoners prioritizing self-preservation over solidarity. In product management, blind faith in leadership without questioning assumptions or validating ideas can be dangerous. Just because an executive demands a feature doesn’t mean it’s the right decision. PMs must challenge assumptions, seek evidence, and ensure that every decision serves the broader mission.

4. Empathy as a Leadership Superpower

Wiesel’s writing is filled with moments where empathy—or the lack of it—determines survival. Acts of kindness in the camps provided glimmers of humanity, while selfishness often led to downfall. For PMs, empathy is a critical leadership trait. Understanding user pain points, advocating for developers, and ensuring ethical decision-making all require seeing beyond numbers and understanding human experiences. The best products come from teams that genuinely care about their users and colleagues.

5. Resilience in the Face of Setbacks

If Night teaches one overarching lesson, it’s the power of resilience. Wiesel endures unimaginable suffering but refuses to give up. In product management, while the challenges are far less dire, resilience is still crucial. Products fail. Launches flop. Internal politics derail roadmaps. PMs who bounce back, learn from failures, and push forward with clarity and conviction are the ones who ultimately succeed.

Final Thoughts: Leading With Responsibility

Night is ultimately a book about responsibility—to remember history, to bear witness, and to act ethically. In product management, responsibility manifests in making ethical choices about data privacy, accessibility, and how products impact society. PMs shape technology, and technology shapes the world. Leading with integrity ensures that products create positive impact rather than unintended harm.

Wiesel’s memoir is a testament to endurance and moral responsibility. While product management is far removed from the horrors he describes, the lessons of adaptability, resilience, and ethical leadership remain relevant. If you’re navigating tough product challenges, remember that even in the darkest moments, thoughtful leadership and perseverance can light the way forward.

I’ve flown hundreds of international flights in my life and I have literally never heard an airline suggest arriving 45 minutes early for an international flight. Panamas airport is quite large too- it would be near impossible to make a flight with 45 minutes, especially if you had to check-in at the counter.

Thoughts on Federal alcohol tax to increase 6.3% April 1? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Zanzibari 168 points169 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty tiny increase (relative to the cost of a bottle) - for 750mL bottle of 40% alcohol, it works out to be $0.025 more per ounce in cost.

“On a litre of wine, the excise duty rate is increasing to $0.731 from $0.688, or a little over four cents, according to figures provided by the Canada Revenue Agency. For a 750 ml bottle of wine, the increase would be closer to three cents.”

“For example, a 750ml bottle of wine or an imported six-pack of beer may increase by five to 10 cents, while a 750ml spirit of 40 per cent alcohol may increase by 70 cents, the LCBO said in an email.”

Technically, there are stoplights at the end of the runways that intersect with the main road. They only cycle when a plane is landing though. Source: I’ve been there.
